This song transitions into probably one of their best songs. That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore, emotional and heartfelt track which is just perfect. Same goes for Well I Wonder.

People talk about Morrissey's depressing lyrics and Johnny Marr's pop brilliance, but there's not a lot of talk about the humor in Morrissey's lyrics.

Really? I think his lyrics are perfectly darkly humorous. I thought that was a common sentiment among fans!

No-one's mentioned on this page that this is one of a group of songs in which Morrissey is extensively misquoting/paraphrasing Elizabeth Smart. (The other big Smart-song is Well I Wonder, but there are references scattered around elsewhere). I'm always reminded of that review which singles out this track and Nowhere Fast as highlights because Johnny Marr (whom the writer regarded as the true star of the show) was "channelling both Scotty Moore and his bastard son Gary!"

One of the great things about The Smilths was being able to quote lines with your friends.I even did a type design in college for " if it's not love Then it's the bomb, the bomb The bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb That will bring us together." Or how about this one - "I'd like to drop my trousers to the world I am a man of means, of slender means." 🤣🤣You could go on like this all day - see what I mean? LOL!!!!! Morrissey's lyrics simultaneously parody and perfectly capture teen/young adult angst. There will never be another..

I haven't listened to the Smiths for a few years, but songs like this remind me how obsessed I was as a teen. Rubber Ring just popped into my head. Good reaction, spotlighting Joyce and Rourke, too. This is the band in full workout mode. Love it!

"What She Said" is high-voltage, feverish rock 'n' roll, but it retains a certain melodic edge.

_MIM_ is like _Dark Side Of The Moon_ - it needs to be heard as a whole to experience it. The way "What She Said" flows into "That Joke.." is magic.

People tend to overlook the fact that The Smiths could really rock when the mood took them. Songs like this, when played live, were very impactful and even saw Marr indulging in ironic rock star poses.

A perfect song. And one very dear to my heart. (I totally relate to it).

The Smiths had so much impact back in the days. It's hilarious redescovering them. Thanks!

That's what she said! Sorry, couldn't help myself. Killer track. Johnny Marr is on fire on this one!

I always understood that “she” with all her books and thoughts was Morrisey himself. The “tattooed boy from Birkenhead” who really really opened her eyes is Johnny Marr. Great track

"What she said/all heady books, she'd sit a prophesize.." NOBODY wrote lyrics like this in the 80's. Brilliant

I feel like after this, you should do the compilation "Singles" (or Louder than Bombs, the older American singles compilation) track by track so you can review all of their singles, because a lot of their really classic tracks were released as singles and were not even on their albums.

This is my most played Smiths Album

Yes, I'm enjoying listening to this album again, which I haven't heard for many years, and this track is one of my favourites from it. I like the energy and Morrissey's sardonic lyrics. It's not one of my favourite Smiths albums, though. I can't remember if I've given my personal ranking on this channel before, it's: Hatful of Hollow, The Queen is Dead, Strangeways Here We Come, Meat is Murder, The Smiths. Is Hatful objectively better than Queen? Probably not, but it was the first Smiths album I heard.

Should try ‘barbarism begins at home’ I think it’s on the same album

Justin is going through the album track by track, so will get to Barbarism eventually.

Like two different songs in one, vocals are ok, the rest of the band, awesome.
