The Allied nations did not want Germany to become its own nation, and their military was well trained and organised, that's why Germany got most of the punishments. The best book that encopass the whole Freikorps period was written by the patriot Dominique Venner. I strongly suggest this fantastic and breathtaking book besides the classic Von Salomon memoir. It's of great interest the chapter depicting the madness of a full communist regime that happened in München the incompetence at full command (Venner calls them the "cafè communists bunch from Schwabing") , and degeneration with prostitutes running around the Wittlesbach palace, reichsbank being robbed by the head of red army Egelhofer and a robber being placed at the head of police (a looter named Kölber), people being killed if they refused requisitions, finally the food detachments being chased away from Bavarian countryside by peasantry.
@kieranadamson3224
@kieranadamson3224 Жыл бұрын
If you look into the History of the Freikorps it makes a disturbing amount of sense that they would go on to become the NSDAP's bully division. They were largely ex-soldiers. Looking desperately for a concrete cause to fight for that would bring benefit to both Germany as well as their loved ones and friends. And so, they started out merely being a radical violent opposition to what they saw as those who wanted to harm Germany and her people. But as things didn't improve, and in some cases even got worse, they turned to a somehow even more radical solution. The NSDAP they believed Hitler would save Germany. I'm sure they justified the more reprehensible things they did with the belief that they were ensuring the rise to power of a man who would save the nation. And look at where that got them. The night of the long knives.

And today? Streets and public places have been named after the leaders of the red murderers, while the selfless heroes of the Freikorps go unmentioned (at best, or get disparaged as Nazis). It's ashaming.

Well, maybe because they have used extreme brutality against unarmed protesters, maybe because most of their victims were innocent, AND MAYBE BECAUSE A SHIT LOAD OF THEM BECAME NAZIS!! Himmler, to name one among many was a freikorp member! Stop writing about things you don't understand. Freikorps where an extremly brutal militia composed of individuals who left their humanity in a trench. Don't treat them as heroes, they do not deserve it.

Read the author: Ernst von Salomon ""Die Geächteten"" and ""Die Kadetten"" Not sure if there is an english available book translation, but those books are not only history eye witness evidences, but also from an artistic perspectiv on a very high level and fun to read.

There is an English translation of Die Geächteten - The Outlaws, as it is called in English. I recently picked it up and it's good so far. Not sure about Die Kadetten, but I'm sure it does have an English version somewhere.

They really had good clothings back then, sad that its now all utility, useful to survive, but it doesn't inspire fear into the enemy's mind before the battle, which could be useful to hit them harder.

Does anybody know what flag is at 3:49? The German tricolor with that 8 pointed star symbol. Can’t seem to find what it represents.
@billwilson7841
@billwilson7841 Жыл бұрын
Thats not a Star, its an Edelweiß, a Mountain Flower only found in the highest points of the Alps. the second group of soldiers marching behind the flag-bearer also wear typical hats worn by bavarian Jäger and Förster. Its safe to assume this flag belongs to some bavarian or southern-german Freikorps then - but I couldnt find the flag or who used it.
