This was waaay ahead of its time. Reality TV was years away and Richard O'Brien literally invented it. No one had never seen anything like this before which is why i think it bombed. But thank god, including rocky, it became a cult classic.

Saddens me that almost no one knows of this movie's existence. I even saw an interview with Little Nel saying even she had never seen it. That kills me as she is one of my favorite characters in it. I think the Rocky Horror cult kind of kept Shock Treatment down as it was such a divergence from it. I personally was introduced to the film before I saw Rocky Horror, so it is my favorite. Favorite musical of all, really. People still aren't aware there was a movie after Rocky Horror.

The movie turns 40 today! True this movie isn't as popular as 'Rocky' and director Jim Sharman has officially disowned it plus the Screen Actors Guild strike of 1980 forced Sharman to get crafty but still has a minor cult following over the years The movie has even inspired a musical adaptation in London as of 2015 Give the filmmakers credit that this depicted and predicted a 24/7 culture of voyeuristic reality television, celebrity politicians, mental health crises, media saturation, corporate takeovers, and subliminal advertising with eerie accuracy This Denton tv program is so dedicated even the audience members are constantly present to the point of falling asleep in their seats The film isn't a total disaster despite its mixed reception upon its release; There's good songs, flashy costumes, bright staging, and actors committed to the material particularly Harper as Janet going from frustrated, bored wife to fake celebrity It looks terrific as well even if the plot is downright confusing There's even a shocking twist to why this show is being orchestrated the way it is it surprised me This holds up surprisingly well, and for all the obvious, above-mentioned reasons, it connects more in 2021 than it did in ’81 mainly to the queer audience and tv lovers It’s a sort of Sliding Doors-like, alternate-universe re-imagining of what the Majors’ lives might have been like had their car never broken down that fateful, velvet-dark and rainy night in 1975 Truthfully given how accurately it predicted the future, it’s actually scarier and spookier than anything that took place inside Frank N. Furter's castle 'Shock Treatment' hasclever satire of tv and entertainment on human exploitation with some nice musical numbers Yet the 1975 movie will always stand the test of time that's for sure

"Rocky Horror Picture Show" is great, but "Shock Treatment" works better as a movie because it was always supposed to be one rather than being adapted from a play. It sucks that it was so easily dismissed on its original release, but the film eventually got the last laugh: it predicted the world we live in now with such an accuracy it is scary. Rocky Horror is camp, "Shock Treatment" is caustic social satire like "Robocop" and "Dawn of the Dead". And it keeps cutting deep.

Little trivia: Susan Sarandon was willing to reprise her role as Janet in this movie, but was denied her asking price (half a million at the time). I can kind of understand why--she wasn't THAT bankable in 1981............................actually, her movie career was still in its infancy. I'd say it was probably for the best, since she instead did the excellent Atlantic City (with Burt Lancaster) the same year.

Funny you say that. I’ve seen the film, and highly enjoyed it despite the lack of Curry’s participation, but having watched the trailer myself, I’m not sure it would have made me want to see the film either. The song is extremely catchy, is of course strange and creepy, but doesn’t tell you hardly anything about the film. While Cliff DeYoung and Jessica Harper were quite excellent following Bostwick and Sarandon, the trailer doesn’t tell us who they are. At least one thing I’d have done is make it more clear that DeYoung and Harper are giving us the further adventures of Brad and Janet. It would have made it more clear that it actually, while wildly different, was still a somewhat direct sequel to TRHPS, despite losing Curry and having to replace Bostwick and Sarandon. Having seen it, it’s a shame it ended up being less popular than TRHPS. DeYoung and Harper were fantastic singers. In fact, DeYoung’s second role is pretty much note for note an equal to Richard O’Brien’s rock falsetto.
