I was lucky enough to see the show twice (once with Mark Little, and then with Peter Gallagher) but I wish I’d been more often as I miss it so much. my best guess is because they couldnt find anyone that fit the role, especially if theyre a small private drama group putting on local shows, but who knows. could have some other complications

​​@@dingIeberryno. I'm sure it was a decision made while writing to streamline and focus the story. While Bert is a memorable and weird character he does nothing to serve the overall plot. By removing that character and his side plot that could focus on Brad and Janet and their story more making for a less convoluted plot and easier to understand. They clearly weren't looking for exact copies of the actors in the movie so casting someone for Bert would be no problem at all. It was a solid story telling decision and served this material well. The original could have used some editing and it would have been more contained like this production is.
