We are pleasantly surprised to discover and bring to you our esteemed viewers a large Caribbean community that have existed in Nigeria for decades. We must not forget that FESTAC 77 introduced especially the Caribbeans to Nigeria! We got to see our brothers and sisters in the diaspora!! What a joy watching them on TV those days enjoying their ancestral homeland, I will never forget!!

Former Carnival king here!!!! I still remember when the association wasn't yet divided into the regions of Surulere, Ikoyi, Ikeja, etc. My first Carnival was the first one in 1982, and it was one big celebration! My (self-made) costume was "The Punk." I still have very vivid memories of the expansion of the Carnival, which coincided with the expansion of the association. As Mrs. Okpabolor states, NWIA was always a big charitable donor to multiple causes. I have very, VERY fond memories of those days... "sigh." I always say my story cannot be written without NWIA. To that point, I married a fellow NWIA girl (20 years and counting... knock on wood 😁)

Wow small world, her late husband, John Obakpolor was a fantastic man, very well spoken and articulate Nigerian Airforce officer, he passed on in 2021 @79yrs. He was also the 24th Chairman of the Nigerian Football Federation from 1984 to 1987. He was a respected Air Force officer, who also distinguished himself in the aviation sector as an Aeronautical Engineer, and was the Chairman of the Technical and Administrative Panel, that investigated the 2012 Dana airline crash that killed all 153 people on board at Iju area of Lagos. From the interview i can see she's also a wonderful person. Well done, thanks for the very informative video.

Another great video and what a very interesting lady you interviewed. She reminds me of the only private foster mum I enjoyed living with as a child in the UK, Mrs Banbury from Mandeville in Jamaica. As someone who has now retired and relocated back to Nigeria it's a shame there are no direct flights between Nigeria and the Carribbean countries as I would love to spend a few months exploring a number of the Caribbean countries including Jamaica.

Great interview, sis. Very informative, especially about the history of NWIA, the festival and charitable purpose. Wish I could be home for the festival. I know it will be a success. I may have actually gone to the festivals at TBS or in Surulere when we lived there. Didn’t make the connection until now! Are there opportunities for Nigerian women allies to join NWIA? Thinking ahead to when I convince my Jamaican other half we need to move back. lol. Thanks for sharing and tell auntie her love for Nigeria, like yours, shines through! 🙌🏾
