The things around the fire are called horse brasses. Originally they were used as charm or amulets to ward off evil spirits and good bring luck.They used to be attached to various parts off the saddle etc.
@LostAdventuresExploring6 ай бұрын
they actually used to put those brass bits on horses?! to ward off evil spirits? that's really interesting i might have to look into them a bit more , great information thank you for your comment and watching 💛

I think the oil stuff from the chimney could be a build up of tar or bitumen i think it comes from burning certain wood & coal but not 100%
@StormyNight7776 ай бұрын
I would say some of the plates and the pitchers would be worth some money. Things like that in the US sell quickly.
@dianadaly67936 ай бұрын
The brasses hanging on the walls are horse brasses, they are hung on the harnesses of cart and plough horses. The black stuff in the chimney is the tar from burning house coal. The brass items on the shelf look like candle snuffers. The shield is just decorative, with the eagle on it I'd say possibly Russian. A Spinster is an unmarried woman, the painting looks like St Michaels Mount in Cornwall. When you said Luxembourg i assume it means Radio Luxembourg which was a radio channel I used to listen to in the 70's, I think it was a Pirate Radio Station. Sinclair Spectrum were one of the first home computers which were popular in the early eighties. The music box i would roughly date to the 1940's/50's. Most old houses especially ones in Wales would have a huge Bible that would get passed down through the family. That was a fascinating explore, thank you 😊

I've just added a comment to a random 😢ops Spinster is just a derogatory term for an older unmarried woman. And radio Luxembourg was a popular pirate radio station competing with the heavily controlled BBC radio stations

Low ceiling were to help with keeping rooms warm. I live in an old farmhouse with 7' ceilings. I wonder if the man that lived there was the son and his mom and dad passed away. He then lived there alone.

Just another observation as I was watching your interesting tour of this old home , both of you should be wearing N95 face masks to protect yourselves from breathing in mould spores ( very evident on the very large ‘Family Bible ) and dust and dry rodent poop almost always found in abandoned structures are very dangerous to breathe in . 🇨🇦🥰😷

Those brass decorative pieces are known as horse brasses and during Roman times were worn by their horses …..Britain has a rich history of making horse brasses….. often made specially for coronations, and other important celebrations and occasions ….and if you visit some old British pubs they are hanging on the walls and above fireplaces, etc. Some are very valuable collectables ….. and reproductions are sold to tourists ….. the authentic ones are quite valuable . 🇨🇦👍🥰

@MarkHossNorthwestrcclub6 ай бұрын
@LostAdventuresExploring I was driving around watching, paused it when I got to each job, so it took a little while to get through it, but definitely worth it 👌🏻 Horse Brasses were originally put on for dressage on the big "Shire/Plough" horses, But later became a household decorative item, with all manor of different scenes and items on them, nearly always black leather with Brass, The Brass 'strainer' Emily picked up, the 2 piece item, was indeed a 'Tea' leaf strainer 🍃 The 'Tar' like substance running down the walls at the back of the fireplace, Is 'Coal Tar' it builds up from the heat up in the chimney from the smoke, It happens more when the chimney has poor draw, meaning the smoke doesn't flow out the chimney quickly enough, Or often in that case, from a stove, that's allowed to burn too slowly, too often, and it doesn't get great airflow, making for a clean burn, so you get very dirty, sooty smoke going up the chimney, which builds up, and eventually causes what you see happening there 😉
@LostAdventuresExploring6 ай бұрын
@@MarkHossNorthwestrcclub wow yea it was really nice to see all the horse brasses still intact and where they should be! ahh so she was right when she said it was a strainer that's cool 😁 ahh great info on the tar we saw, we were wondering what was going on there so that clears that mystery up cheers my bro 💛💛💛
