You are speaking truth! Larry is one of those competitors that would rather die than lose, and he trained constantly. That's hard to beat.

Magic Johnson was visited in Lansing MI. Magic told Bobby Knight that he didn't believe he could play for a coach like him. Bobby Knight stood up and walked out the door.

Bird only was a head coach for 3 seasons. 1997-98 58-24 - lost in the Eastern Conference Finals 1998-99 33-17 - lost in the Eastern Conference Finals (shortened season due to lockout) 1999-00 56-26 - lost in the NBA Finals When you look at everything Bird did you can see why he might have the highest basketball IQ of all-time. He played, coached and managed teams and was successful at every level.

Did you know he only agreed to a 3 year contract as coach. I think if he coached 5 years the Pacers may have won a championship.

My understanding is Bird was good at anything basketball, drinking beer & brawling. Oh and he's pretty good on the tractor.👨‍🌾 🤣

You have to understand though that when Bird and Magic came into the League, basketball was basically a 5th sport behind MLB, NFL, NHL and bowling. The NBA was in dire straights coming out of the 70s. It was Bird and Magic that saved the League and set the table going forward to what it is now.

Bird was a very good coach. That is obvious from his record and the fact that he was Coach of the Year. And later, Executive of the Year both with the Pacers. He won League MVP 3 times back to back. There have only been 2 others who have done that. Also, 3 consecutive 3-point shooting contests. He is in the top 3 of all time!

Bird was planning on staying for his senior year at ISU all along. Negotiations with the Celtics started in earnest after that senior season. Yes, he was good with coaching kids. He didn't want any publicity surrounding it. Bird's contract was the largest rookie contract in any sport at the time. Sometime early in Magic's career, ownership in LA renegotiated his contract to be 25 years for a million a year.

Pat Riley legendary NBA coach just recently quoted saying: "If I needed a player to win a game/championship, I'd choose Michael Jordan". "If I needed a player to take a shot to save my life, I'm picking Larry Bird ".

I think with Larry's IQ as a player makes him a top tier coach. He took the Pacers to their first and only Finals appearance.

He didn’t stay at Indiana because it was too big. Bird would’ve dominated at Indians and Knight would’ve just let him do what he wanted like every other coach.

Farmboy warrior savant! As far as Knight goes: I think anybody that watched Bird play for 10 minutes and didn't get it didn't deserve it.

Larry Bird was country boy strong...at 6'10". As a coach, Bird is the only one that took MJ to 7 games in the finals.

Knight is one of the greatest college coaches, but he is very difficult to work with. I do not think Bird would have been as successful as he was at Indiana State. I am only 2 years younger than Larry and have followed him from the beginning of his collegiate career.

Im a life long Hoosier. Knight was great .... .for the right players. But i saw him ruin many good shooters. They ended up so playing so uptight they would miss lay ups. But, BK won 3 ncaa titles at IU, and, he graduated 98% of his athletes. BK was an enigma but many saw him as an @$$hole. But MOST of his plaers were fiercely loyal to him. Regarding Bird, would he have ruined him as he he did many players? Or would he have made an even greater player like he did Isaiah? God only knows.

Bobby Knight IS one of the greatest college coaches of all time. I’d have no issues with a son playing for him. Add Bird to IU and they probably win 2 more titles in addition to the 1975 team Bird would’ve been a freshman on which went undefeated and won the title.

Bobby Knight unfortunately has a very abrasive coaching style. When he could find players who responded to his style, he was great. Others, like Bird, got the hell out of Dodge as fast as they could
