When you said that in North Korea "There is no word for love." I immediately thought that's one of the saddest things I have ever heard anyone say. You are an incredibly brave woman and I am very glad you are free from that country. It really is a place designed to crush the human spirit. You are living proof that they failed.

@@alukuhito I really have no idea why you or anyone else for that matter would feel the need to call in to question what she is saying. She’s not the only person to have ever defected from North Korea. (Thousands have) Everyone who has ever escaped from that dark place has told stories that are frighteningly similar. It is also a matter of record that the majority of the population live in abject poverty and most in rural communities are malnourished. Tens of thousands are locked in prisons (They call them “Re-education camps”) and torture of any who criticize the regime is a common occurrence. So while it is shocking to hear that she never heard her mother tell her that she loved her when she was a child, it is not at all beyond belief that such a thing should be true in a nation where love of the “Dear leader” takes precedence over everything else. Now everything I have stated here is a matter of public record so you either know what she is saying it true but have other reasons to suggest it is otherwise or, you are ignorant but thought you would come here to cast doubt on a subject you know nothing about. Either way, you have failed spectacularly to convince anyone of anything at all.

@@alukuhito what are you saying? That she's lying? That it's actually not as bad as she says? Because for some people in North Korea life isn't that bad compared to the political outcasts who are living from meal to meal not certain if they will have enough food to survive. Those are the majority of people in North Korea and it is by threat of execution not to capture those images. Are you saying that's all bullshit? Is it because you can't fathom that in this day and age people are being starved to death while the rest of the world just turns a blind eye? Ya, me too I can't believe it either but I'm afraid it's more than likely true everything she is saying.

You can also change, what people notice with their senses. For example there is this study that people didn't see blue before there was the word "blue". They saw totally different colors although the eye was physically able to see blue all the time.

Rebecca Mahneke That’s interesting...I wonder how they determined that people didn’t see blue, and did the word or the noticing come first? (I mean, if you didn’t notice a color was different, why would you make a word for it?) I am intrigued and I have questions...🤔 Is there a video or resource for research that you can recommend I start with?

D M The word “gay” is actually a great example of what I was saying. Gay is supposed to mean cheerful, bright, showy. The word has been hijacked and now is used to mean “homosexual”. I understand that languages do evolve slowly over time, but this should not be used as an excuse to change the meanings of words/terms when they don’t suit us. This results in poor communication and misrepresentation. For example, I used to describe myself as gay, when the word was still associated with its original meaning. But I could be severely misrepresented if comments that I made earlier in life were presented to the general public, because some people decided to misuse the word “gay” and assign to it a meaning it did not hold. Take this most recent example in the U.S. of the Democratic Party’s use of the term “packing the court”. This phrase actually means to add to the original number of justices to the Supreme Court to tip the odds in the favor of a certain party. But some people are misusing the term to make it seem as though the completely legitimate action of simply replacing a Supreme Court justice is “packing the court” because they don’t like the party the nominee hails from. But most U.S. citizens won’t be familiar with the term and won’t bother to look it up, and the misuse of the term will be used to deceive many. Words have meanings, and if we go changing those meanings according to our whims, we weaken the strength of our language, and also make communication difficult.

They're trying to do it here in America. Decades ago a man named Yuri Bezmenov tried to warn us about a process called "active measures" to destroy America from the inside by confusing everyone with language. They start by targeting universities with nonsense gender studies which is why now math is "racist" and people can identify as attack helicopters. They also need to destroy society's heroes and re-write history which is why statues are being torn down. The endgoal is to replace a society's values with authoritarian Marxism/Communism.

I had to move out because he started threatening me. I found out months later that he ended up attacking the other roommates and the landlord sold the house because he didn't feel like dealing with him. Funny thing is the guy had moved out once and came back(probably issues with his roommates) but for the love of God I don't understand why the landlord let him back into the house. I imagine that in some ways, it would be easier for someone in her position to accept more progressive ideas about gender and sexuality than an ignorant person living in the US, since she was already in the mindset of having to re-learn so much about the world and adapt to the culture that she found herself in; it was just one more thing that was different than she'd always been taught. She was ready to learn. People in the US, where information is (as you say) available at all times, can sometimes fall into the trap of thinking they already know everything.

@@draughtoflethe I agree, I came here to comment exactly that. It's kind of like how a child can much more easily accept the unknown than adults can. When a child sees something they've never seen before, they kind of just accept it as new to *them* instead of shocking or impossible. When you don't have a particularly strong motive to reject knowledge, it's a lot easier to learn and change your opinion. Sorry, obviously, you were much more eloquent in your explanation than I was, I just wanted to say I agree with you, and maybe try to add on to what you were saying. Not sure I actually added to anything, but I tried lol.

@@vannah12222 I like how you framed it, actually -- that a child, or someone from a vastly different cultural framework, sees a confusing idea as "new to ME" rather than completely unheard-of and bizarre. Maybe its because Korean society used to be quite gender segregated in the past and it was not really ok to show affection for the opposite sex freely. To have lived through the horrors of your youth, from escaping, the death of your poor father, the rape of your mother and then being taken and sold, and also raped. You have come through the other side, from what I can see and how you present yourself, you have come out the other side a very strong and super positive person. I’m not sure how you feel inside or if you hold resentment (which of course you have every right to hold those feeling) But you seem like such an amazing and wonderful woman. There is a Korean word for love. It is Sarang. And they are taught to love the Supreme Leader.
@richardpichan6916
@richardpichan6916 2 жыл бұрын
Love is only to be directed at the supreme leader. Everything regarding the existence of the citizens is subordinate to the regime ideology. EVERYTHING!....identity, health, prosperity, family, even every individuals existence. This is also the reason so many on the conservative end of U.S. politics has a hard time accepting a lot of the ideologies held by the extreme left in U.S. politics. Much of what divides our own citizens in the U.S. is the unparalleled comparison of "oppression" so many activists and political groups claim to live under in the United States of America. Honestly, I refuse to even present examples as our amazing host of this video has clearly outlined many of the major differences between the "oppression" in our country and the true oppression in places such as N.K.. Anyone "oppressed" in the U.S. is either a victim of criminal activity, or a victim of tragic circumstances via their own poor decisions/failure to act, or a victim of circumstances due to a parent, guardian, or caregiver which once again falls under criminal misconduct. "We the people" are supposed to look after one another AND keep our elected officials in check. Unfortunately, "We the people" have allowed the seeds of division to be planted and nurtured by turning our backs on one another for petty wants, desires and beliefs. So many in the world see America as a paradise or dream come true, while many of our citizens don't possess the critical thinking skills to accept the things around them as they are and attempt to better themselves. These U.S. citizens only feel accomplished when they knock their fellow citizens to the ground to get ahead. No appreciation, no accountability, no true grasp of the nightmare reality that citizens of many other countries live day to day. Many Americans walk about angered or intimidated by someone using the wrong pronoun when addressing them....lets see how long these individuals last when faces with imprisonment, beatings or executions for doing any one of the numerous things that we in the U.S. partake in as our normal, daily routine.

Hi Yeonmi! I’m a viewer from Germany and I believe people here aren’t really educated about North Korea...I wish the general society would care more about North Korean people and how to support them. Watching your videos makes me really humble. We take a lot for granted in this country. I grew up with so much privilege that I even feel bad describing it to you. And my parents are middle class, so that’s the privilege most German people have: 12 years of school education, free university, health care, peace, individual freedoms...and little things like being able to buy the food that you want. Deciding to be vegan. Questioning your parents. ‘Living your own life’. Studying art history without the guarantee to have a good job in the future. That’s something that would be interesting to me as well: do North Koreans have a concept of art? Because while this kind of cultural ‘pleasure’ seems so essential for human fulfillment here in Europe, it probably sounds ridiculous to you? Anyways, back to my privilege: I can freely choose what I want to do with my life, which places I want to see. It’s rather easy and cheap for me to travel to different European countries, but it’s also possible to travel outside of Europe - that’s even normal to us. For someone whose world exists only within the own country’s borders that probably sounds like a different planet 🙈 these are all things I don’t often realize. We not only don’t have to worry about survival, we are in the position to care about philosophical and ethical questions. Learn another language, try out an instrument. All these things we take for granted. Even our peace. But my grandpa grew up in post war time, starving a lot. He still knows what it feels like. For a country to be war-torn and separated (because Germany was divided too after the 2nd world war, but was reunited in 1989). We forget these things nowadays. That we’ve come a long way and that our friendships to other countries today are the result of hard work and a lot of self reflection. Nothing I have is a given. Because of Germany’s history, children nowadays are taught tolerance over everything. You cannot discriminate someone based on sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, social status - anything like that is frowned upon. Bragging is frowned upon. People who think they are superior are frowned upon. Because this feeling of superiority once destroyed our country completely. So we believe that we are rather humble for a western country. But we can always be more humble. Show more appreciation. The food that we eat has grown somewhere, often not our own gardens. We just pick up our carrots and potatoes and rice and fruits at the supermarket without thinking twice. I think that should change.

@Mrs Jones Actually, even if these are general needs everybody should have, that still does not mean you should or even can take them for granted. They can be taken away from you (just like in North Korea for example) ans this means you should be gratefull for having them so easily. What is wrong in thanking the world to give you something like food or savety, even if you think its just a neccesity? Thousands of generations before you had to work hard for their food und the fields or for the savety in their country in wars, even today in some parts of the world people are starving and dying in war. This means you ARE privileged in comparison to them. The concept of human rights and that your righteus system respects them is a privilege!

German here too. I agree with you on a lot of things; in quite a few ways we Germans are spoiled, and I say so being raised in a low income one parent household. But at the same time, I think this is the cumulation of a lot of people working hard to create those possibilities. Still, we are far from bein all excepting or humble. In a lot of ways out way of life is supported by the exploitation of others and few Germans - or general Western people - are willing to look at the blood that out wealth is build upon. The reason why we can afford lots of foods is because they are cheap. They are cheap because the people producing them don't get paid enough. German agriculture and farming is being driven to extinction because of the low prices that the supermarkets dictate. And don't even let me start on the bullshit that some clothing brands pulled this year where they declined their workers pay because of Corona and the resulting decline in people willing to buy (I look at you C&A). In this way we still have to improve a lot and sadly I don't think that our politics nor the way our society works really helps with that. I mean, theoretically no discrimination is allowed. But in the meantime our rich country refuses to take in refugees, Nazis demonstrate on our streets and gay marriage just got legalized with many laws still needing changes. You say, we need more appreciation and I agree. But above that we need more awareness about our consume, about our privilege, about the real discrimination within our country and the problems of other countries. Finally I want to say : this thread is such a German typical thing. I think we all have a tendency to discuss politics and philosophical questions wherever we can. Even in a KZbin comment section.

Most probably from what she says the ultimate destinations of North Koreans is probably decided for them at school. You are going to be a soldier. You are going to be a teacher. Like the other ppl said above, I don't think it's about "privilege" or excuses, and I feel it's an unfair comparison. Yeonmi left NK knowing there was something she didn't like, and she was looking for something different. This situation would make anyone much more open to accepting new options. She chose to learn about, move to, and assimilate into Western society, and she was able to do so successfully bc she actually wanted to understand it, accept it, and be a part of it. And because her intent to understand was genuine, her learning wasn't stunted by previous assumptions and judgements. With older people, it's not like they left their old culture in search of a new one, the culture changed around them, and often times, without them. That's very difficult for anyone, let alone someone who is older, as the human brain becomes less adaptive as it ages. Plus, I'm sure they have their reasons why they think the way they do, just like everyone else. Just bc someone thinks differently than you doesn't mean they're wrong or less than. However, I do think it's a shame that some ppl maybe missed the point of her story, by taking her open-mindedness and understanding, and using it to judge others...

It gets a little unsafe for children when people expect you to remove the science between a cis girl like myself and a trans male like you, because then it implies your trans maleness developed and wasn’t your neurobiologically assigned gender at birth, compared to a cis girls aligned neurobiology to their anatomy. It doesn’t take away from your experience with dysphoria however, it just asserts it as the scientific byproduct of being born with a transecting gender and reproductive anatomy.
