Just saw this video..my 2 cents... back 1961 in my last phase of flight training flying the F11F. Was my 3rd flight of the syllabus and was doing touch and go's. On my 2nd go around as I lifted off about 200' or so a bird decided to nest in the right intake. I just had a glimpse as it passed down the right side of the cockpit. Didn't think anything at first until I noticed that there was a loss of power as the aircraft leveled off at about 500'. Checked my EGT and saw it was almost pegged. I reduced throttle to reduce the EGT and was able to maintain level flight wings level. Declared emergency and tried to start a downwind turn (with usual 20-20 bank angle)but was starting to lose altitude so I reduced bank angle to maintain level flight and continued a wide turn to come around for landing. During this process I considered ejecting but the seat was the old milspec seat which required at least 1000'to eject safely. Continued on to a safe after nursing the EGT to remain in safe(?) limits. Engine flamed out a few seconds after touching down. Rolled out to a taxiway and shutdown. After deplaning I looked into the right intake and saw that the bird carcass was plastered from the 7 to 11 o'clock position. Later on was told that 11 of the 13 stages had been destroyed. Completed my flight training in Dec'61 without further incidents.

Birds of prey often regard aircraft as rivals invading their hunting ground and go into attack mode…so one bird guru told us during Pilot Training in Moose Jaw p, Saskatchewan. There were numerous Hawks in the area patrolling and hunting gophers and mice in the wide open farmland surrounding the base. In a single-engine jet at low altitude not much time to ponder “the decision” if a bird takes the engine out.

I live right under where this happened. I was listening on my Icom R30 to the T-45 coming in to Navy Fort Worth. I wasn't paying close attention but I thought I heard the word emergency mentioned so I ran over and hit the record button. I was getting ready to leave the house at the time and then I heard two booms. What I think that was was the ejection seats doing their job. The crash happened a quarter mile from my house but yet I didn't hear that ironically. I wish I could post the short audio clip I filmed off the radio later in this reply but that's not possible. It was a lot cleaner audio than what's in the video. But I never expected to see this cockpit video. The trainer pilot was injured but not terribly bad. I heard the patient report as he was CareFlite'ed to a local hospital. But the trainee parachuted down into power lines and was much more severely hurt. Thankfully they both live though. He is quite close to stalling speed, flaps and gear out, he also was quite lower than he should, you can see on HUD hirizontal lines, first one is 5 degrees, glide slope is 3 degrees, do this mean that touchdown point should be on between middle, and first line. You can see that the start od runway is way to high on hus HUD - event if he would be on correct GS - he would not make IT. But he would have altitude to trade for airspeed się he could manouver the plane into empty space rsther than home

Technology exists to avoid this but it is ungodly costly. An average jet engine would cost nearly a third times as much of its original price for this technology if it were utilized. It’s just too damn expensive. I believe Rolls-Royce designed a jet engine around a decade ago that was 100% virtually indestructible from ice, any debris, birdstrike or anything else shy of large pieces of metal entering the turbo fans. The engine also cost around $18 million more as well.

And that, my friends, is why I fly RC. You can do everything right, and then a Russian crow happens along. Stuff happens, and not every plane has ejection seats. And even if you do, you could land in your own planes burning remains (these pilots did not, but it must have crossed their minds, they were close). Kudos to the pilots for handling a difficult situation well. And Re: RC... besides not getting killed, I also enjoy a 5:1 or greater thrust to weight ratio. And carry 20 Gs without issue. Try that F-22 (don't even try F-35).

Weird comment. I fly RC too and enjoy it but flying real planes is not comparable. Both hobbies involve things that fly, but that's it. Most of the things you do in aviation are centered around managing and reducing risks. A typical GA aircraft isn't jet powered and won't be downed by a bird. It was just a split second but we both gave each other a Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot look. A half pound pigeon can take down a small plane. These hawks can weigh 4 pounds. Whatever his speed was added to my 75 mph on climbout would've been a really bad outcome for me. G-d had mercy on me that day.

Looks like the aircraft went down on a residential area. Any further information? Ground casualties?

Disadvantage of one engine aircraft. Jet plane without thrust turns into brick realy fast.

This is why all Primary jet trainers need 2 engines.

As many departure/arrival bird strikes that happen in USAF T-38's, just wait until the T-7 replaces the fleet...

Lol Boeing really was smart-they might get one new order per bird strike!

I've always felt the same, but some have noted that many twins have only one engine driving hydraulics, etc, not full redundancy. I dont know how this plays out dirtied up for landing. Maybe some thrust and even one more minute of usable hydraulic pressure could pay dividends in getting to the runway, or having more choice of where to ditch it.
@per_scep_tivegamer8792 жыл бұрын
That could complicate the training with asymmetric thrust issues if its the usual side by side placement. Over & under might be a fix but i am no engineer.

This is exactly why Canada has outlawed the use of remote-controlled flying moose within 5 miles of any airfield.

Unfortunately, people on the ground do not have an ejection seat, hope no one was hurt & their possessions insured

Did the plane land on a house ? Tough to tell

Poor bird, at the wrong place on the wrong time.

The instructor kept the nose up after the bird strike losing all airspeed stalling and tumbling out the sky. Why not push forward right away to maintain speed and control?
@Brokkolesz2 жыл бұрын
Because on short final you're not much above stall speed anyways. With all your thrust going out and flaps full gear out its literally a brick. They knew they are not going to make it (they even said it) and if they don't make it anyways, at least they can try to save some altitude - which is key to a safer ejection. Which is what they did, and punched out seconds later. Short final engine out above a residential area is a death sentence without an ejection seat.

Seems like they stretched that glide

Still don't understand, with all the advancement in flight why the radio sound like a tin can and string

Long final, to low approach, note when he changed AOA to intercept glide path 00:25.

He selected down flap, that’s why AOA changed
@canjosh2 жыл бұрын
@@abufahad8969 instructor said “watch your altitude” at which point the student pulled up to intercept the glide path. This was a few seconds before they then intercepted the birds, who were unfortunately clearly on centerline and on glide path.
