First of all, great reaction. I am a metal head, but I have a spot in my heart for the music of Kenny Rogers. At 49 years old I have not had to fight to prove I am a man. For me, insults are not a reason to fight nor is a punch in the face (I have been tested on that once). Threaten the life of my wife/family, or violate them in any way and you will see 49 years or restraining myself evaporate. I might defend myself if I thought it was a life or death situation, but I have not been tested there yet. I have probably heard this song at least one hundred times, but this has to be the first time I really listened to the lyrics. My father did not lead a passive life, but he gave me some wisdom that I will never forget. You can choose to or not to be angry. Don't allow others to control you with your anger.

I love you guys! Keep up the good work! Old Country is almost always better. You did know there was a time in the 1980's that the only thing on Country stations was Reba and Garth, right? They would not play anybody who was dead, because they couldn't give out free tickets or whatever. A lot of good, Old Country fans went to other music, instead. A lot of diehards will tell me somebody sings like the old days, and I'll check it out, but I know the next time I hear some real, good Old Country is when I'm Upstairs in Heaven, hearing the old greats 'Live'. I love the reaction on both of your faces when he hits the line… Both of you stopped and you’re faces fell in unison. People, real human beings, feel for others when they’re subjected to horrendous conditions. This song portrays one of the worst. Listening to Kenny, I felt the righteous anger and fury of a husband, of a true man, when he hears a woman has been treated horribly… and I was only 6 years old when it came out. I remember asking my granddad why he didn’t kill those guys that hurt that girl. I saw the same reaction in both of your eyes. Music reaches into the soul. Gender, race, belief system, it all breaks down when we’re faced with crimes like this. Even at my young age, I thought the punishment should be death. As I’ve grown and gained wisdom, this song brings me back to the place where I feel the permission to end someone. There are some people out there who can forgive much. I don’t ever know if I’m one of them. This song alway brings the difference of being raised in the country versus being raised in the city… or maybe not. Most of my friends, refined by a life in the city, want the boys to die - not just go to jail. In this day, I’m so glad that people (fellow humans) can join together and say that this behavior will never be okay.. and we’ll end you if you do it.

When I listen to this song, I remember what my dad told me 2 years before this song came out. Son, don't ever start a fight. If you can, walk away from a fight. If they call you a coward, let them. It is just a word. But if someone puts you in a situation where you have no choice but to fight, you do and use whatever it takes to be the only one able to walk away at the end of the fight. I have always believed that the most dangerous person is one who does not want to fight, but just wants to live in peace. When that person is pushed to a point where they have no choice but to fight, they are not simply fighting to do the right thing. They are fighting to avenge the peace that they were forced to abandon. That makes them more dangerous than you could ever imagine.
@samuelvincent557 Жыл бұрын
The advice my Father gave me was very similar. Being called a name doesn't make it true. My Father had a bad temper when he was young. He got into a lot of fights. Many he regretted later in his life. Not just for the damage he did, but because they were fights he shouldn't have risen to. What he taught me about fighting was to avoid it, whenever possible, because the cost of getting into a fight is often more than it's worth. But there may come a time that walking away will cost more. Like when a loved one is being threatened or hurt. And there was a philosophy about fighting that he taught me, and this has helped me keep a fight or two from happening. If someone picks a fight with you that you cannot get out of, remember, that in a fight like that, there are no rules or honorable methods. You fight to win and do whatever it takes. I had someone try and start a fight over something stupid and I told him that if he insisted in fighting, I would do the the honor of taking him as a serious threat and consider this a fight for my life. He was just sober enough to understand that, and he walked away, after some more blustering. I am happy to say that I am nearly 50, and have yet to be in a real fight and I hope to keep that record going.
@lenawright18572 жыл бұрын
I was born and raised in the South (Georgia), and when I was a young girl I had a HUGE crush on Kenny Rogers (before all the cosmetic surgeries). That being said, I was raised that you didn't start a fight, and if you could walk away you should. However if walking away wasn't an option then you made sure they knew you were there. I know that there's always someone out there bigger and badder than you, but if you had to fight, you give/gave it your all. That's how I raised my kids and my granddaughter (her mama, my eldest is a US AIRMAN 1st class and a single mom). I have always believed that there's a time and a place for everything. Had an older cousin who we grew up with and I came to call him as my older brother because he was at home when i came into this world. We didnt have recorders,or cassette tapes back then but whenever this song came on the radio i would spot him frozen on the spot listening to it. He went on to join the army and became one of the elites-we lost touch .Later in years we met up again and as I get to know him again he started to open up to me more.He always counted me as his little brother so he shared some deep issues.What he went through,what he witnessed as a kid-his sister- raped,then his mum got married again,him coming to live at our home and watching how abusive physically,and mentally my dad was to my mum- how my dads brothers and cousins(grown as man) just sat quietly and didnt intervene when all this abuse was happening.He said that was the reason he joined the army so he could learn all that skill come back home with the vengeance if he ever come back home. He did come back when he did. He later said that he has been back before but found out that everyone has changed.Dad has been changed by Jesus- left drinking and has mellowed and loved mum. Our uncles were more responsible and had left that life behind. I dont know what happened to those that raped his sister-but after hearing all his memories i came to understand the reason he was so attached to this song. He became a social worker by default - not that he went out of his way to study it as a career,he just had a way with street kids.How he encouraged them,helped mould some awesome human beings - So much more about him i could share but i think ive said enough. I just watched your reaction and thought about him when listening to that Kenny Rogers song again.

How I was raised, Mom always told me that it takes a bigger person to walk away. Unfortunately in this world there are some people who only understand one thing. Sometimes you just have to make a stand and it's really sad that people insist on pushing others to point. We're all in this Shit together we can at least be nice to each other.
