I find your channel really helpful since me and my husband are bound to moving to IA particularly in Iowa City this June 2024. I have my VA hospital job assignment there in IA city, we are also considering to find our home in Coralville area if not that far from VA.

Why are there no fences in Iowa? I’m from California and just bought a house close to a busy street. I’m considering putting in a tall fence around the backyard so that my children can play without me worrying about the busy street. Can adding the fence change the value of my house and if so, would it be a positive or negative value?

Make sure you check city regulations and/or HOA rules about fences (if your home is in a HOA)-many have specific rules regarding fence height and material ( i.e. poly chainlink only). Iowa is pretty windy. Chain link lets the wind keep moving. Solid fences will cause a wind block and you may get piles of leaves and snow drifts piled up. It is doubtful the fence will add much monetary value to your property, but it may help it sell more quickly as some buyers may see it as a benefit. It won’t detract from your home’s value. Ultimately, do what YOU want to enjoy your property and keep your kiddos safe.
