Why aren't crimes against women decreasing in India? Because the criminals are sitting in Parliament. A report has emerged detailing how many representatives have cases of sexual offenses against them, and the truth revealed by this report is alarming for any woman. It is clear that crimes against women are not decreasing in the country because the responsibility of making laws to address these issues has been entrusted to the criminals themselves. The common public also shares some blame in this regard. How many leaders are involved in sexual harassment, and which party has the most cases against its leaders? What is the government doing about it? Is there no law against criminal leaders in the country? There are many questions, so here is a detailed answer.
Protests against crimes against women are ongoing across the country. After the Kolkata rape-murder case, not only doctors but also ordinary citizens are on the streets demanding justice. Celebrities from all over the country are also speaking out on this issue. Despite this, crimes against women continue unabated. On one hand, there are protests against rape, and on the other, there are incidents of exploitation and rape of young girls from Uttar Pradesh to Maharashtra.
Crimes against women are not taken seriously in the country because the responsibility to prevent them has been given to the criminals themselves. A report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed that there are cases of sexual offenses against 151 current legislators and MPs.
These include acid attacks on women, rape, sexual harassment, molestation, assault with the intention of stripping a woman, stalking, buying and selling underage girls for prostitution, harassment by the husband or in-laws, forcibly preventing or abducting a married woman, engaging in relations with a woman without her consent, marrying another woman while the first wife is still alive, and dowry-related murders.
As expected, the BJP leads the list. Among the 151 representatives, 54 are from the BJP. Of these, 44 BJP legislators have cases against them for crimes against women, and 10 BJP MPs also face such allegations.
It is not that other parties are free from such issues. The Congress is in second place after the BJP, with 23 representatives facing cases of crimes against women. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has 17, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has 13, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has 10, and five leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) are also implicated in crimes against women while holding high positions. The report also indicates that currently, 14 legislators and 2 MPs are facing serious charges of rape. The BJP and Congress each have 5 legislators/MPs facing such accusations, including 3 BJP legislators and 2 MPs, and 5 Congress legislators.
When it comes to election seats, all parties ignore crimes. That’s why, after the report was published, parties from the BJP to Congress have remained silent.
The discussion often begins with the party at the top of the list of offenders, so we will start with the BJP. It is also important to discuss this because the party that holds power also controls our safety and rights as women.
