The dishwasher pods have 3 different agents in them- detergent, rinse aid, and additives . I prefer the gel dishwasher detergent, but I also buy a rinse agent. With the gel, I can put a drop on top of the dish soap dispenser, and it gives the pre- rinse a boost. I had to go online to read the instructions for my dishwasher, as these machines don’t seem to come with instructions anymore.🌺

It’s hard to test these because it depends on your water hardness. You need something more concentrated like Cascade Platinum or Finish Quantum for harder water conditions I’ve learned over the years. But for soft water plus using rinse aid, less is more!! The Cascade Complete is almost just as good as their higher end Platinum series, just a few less chemicals they use in it is all. Awesome video!!

After testing several methods, the plain Costco pods with regular rinse aid worked best and was significantly cheaper. I have trouble finding the powder version of dishwasher detergents in my area. I think it’s the dishwasher and hot water (plus the over 3-hour wash time) more than the detergent. I got a new Kitchenaid dishwasher a year ago to replace the same brand that died after 18 years (wouldn’t heat water, so gave an error message). I’ve only used Kroger cheapo pods and every load has come out spotless with one exception (peanut butter is the only thing that defeated it by leaving slight streaks on knives used to spread it). I only remove stuck-on egg yolk and mash potato remains and won’t purposely leave grease.

I then carry the water outside and use it to fill my watering can and can use that next day to water my plants. I have just bought a countertop dishwasher, the first I have ever owned in 60 years - it will arrive tomorrow. Miss Living on a dime thanks for the comparison. So a few things. 1. You don't really have to test the hand washing / gallons thing. Unless you have tampered with your faucet's flow restrictors (which have been, federally, in place since 1996) you're going to get 2.2 GPM (Gallons per minute) out of the sink faucet. California is more restrictive by 0.2 GPM but all in all 11 min X 2.2 GPM = 24.2 gallons. Next nice video glad you did Great Value near the beginning. That's the one I wanted to see. I would off that you tell the viewers you washer make and model and the settings you are using because that also makes a difference. :) Thanks for the video

This comparison was not as bounding as it could have been as the dishes were more or less already clean with only some soft/wet soils on them. You should repeat your test with dried and burnt on soils, heavy grease, sticky stuff like dough, etc. I bought a dish washer because I don't like washing dishes by hand, so if I have to do any amount of pre-washing it is not off to a great start. :-) I suspect that you will find the lack of enzymes and actual surfactants in your homemade concoction will cause it to struggle. Borax is good stuff, but by itself it can only do so much. Neither borax nor baking soda are sufactant so you are relying on the mechanical force of the water coupled with abrasion from the borax and baking soda to remove soil. I can guarantee your homemade cleaner is not going to be sufficient at removing bacteria without support from a surfactant. The high alkalinity of the borax and the abrasion from the baking soda are a great platform to build on though. Plus, both will help to counter act hard water, making a surfactant (when added) more effective.

While like you I absolutely call BS on Cascades marketing as it's flat out wrong I have proven that beyond any shadow of a doubt my dishwasher saves water compared to hand washing I have a Full sized portable dishwasher one of those ones that's in well and just hocks up to your kitchen sink anyways my dishwasher witch for the record is anything but new hell it's made by a Brand that went Bankrupt in Canada 10 years old my dishwasher is that old ( I am from Canada we have the exact same style of dishwasher like she has ) Anyways to do the dishes by hand it would involve filling the sink with water ( I live in an apartment I have a basic single compartment style sink) Anyways I ran a load through my dishwasher on the heavy duty cycle ( that includes a pre rise cycle) and on the heavy duty cycle my dishwasher used 80% of the water I needed to hand wash ( having a portable dishwasher it's easy to measure just put the plug in the sink and record were the water comes up to) I will remind you my dishwasher is absolutely freaking ancient it is nowhere near as new as hers is not even close. My brand of dishwasher hasn't even been manufactured in over a decade to give you an idea how old my dishwasher is and it used 80% of the water that I would need to hand wash Okay no a 20% savings in water isn't that big of a deal however it definitely adds up and quickly let's say you wash your dishes 4 times a week in 1 week you have already saved enough water with the dishwasher to account for a full cycle ( again this is with my very old dish washer I am sure newer dishwasher are even more efficient than mine) however I can only provide the data I have on hand and yes while it's not nearly as my as Cascade is claiming a dishwasher. Definitely saves water. I have proven that with my ancient dishwasher, I'm sure newer ones are even better than mine is
