I had a horrible experience in Monks Corner So. Carolina, I was 19 in 1989 and moved there from the north. I walked into a public library and the librarian approached me after I had been sitting there for about 20mins browsing the books. The librarian, was black, and proceeded to politely explain that I was in the the wrong library. I couldn't for the life of me understand what she could possibly mean,( the wrong library? ) As soon as I questioningly repeat what she said, with the look of confusion on my face. She then told me very quietly that oh, you're so and so daughter from the north, you don't know about our little town. I was shocked, and appalled by what she had meant, I had never experienced this level of racism in my life. Didn't realize that segregation still existed in the south in 1989. I was offended for myself, and for the black community that still dealt with this behavior. AND EVEN A LITTLE ASHAMED OF MY OWN WHITE HERITAGE THAT ALLOWED IT TO STILL EXIST. sorry for the long winded comment I made. I just wanted to share this experience and apologize to anyone that experiences racism today.

Pennsville, NJ is a sundown town in South Jersey. I grew up in Woodstown, NJ and remember a black family who moved there being forced out. If you were black, you could work there but had to leave before evening. Millville, NJ wasn’t a sundown town but I remember them having a KKK march there. This was in the late 70s through the 90s.

I'm 6'5 245lbs and my eldest son is 6'7 265lbs. We both played football, in college (him most recently). We both were in Vidor, AFTER dark, we got looks by those with confederate clothing, etc. THEY kept their distance, but the looks on their faces said they wanted to do us harm. I was 39 years old and my son was 21 years old at that time. A police officer kindly came up to us and literally said, "I don't have an issue with you being here but there are a bunch of folks who don't want you here but are afraid to approach you, would you mind just leaving and coming back during sunrise? PLEASE!" Needless to say we finished our business and left. Was very interesting to see so called tough racists just stop and stare and keep their mouths shut because of our physical appearance.

I thank Jesus for protecting me when later I found out I had driven into a town that has zero population of black people. Turned off the main road to let another vehicle go because I don't like to be tailgated I turned down a small road and that same vehicle turned behind me they didn't follow me all the way but the road I turned down got more narrow I decided to turn around to get back on the main road all all I could see was white people outside at different houses, my car needed gas I stopped at the gas station all I saw was white people however the cashier looked Middle Eastern and he had a look in his eyes like a look that said you need to be careful here. @ I’ll do it here. Anna and Vienna, Illinois are on I-57 and can get to them from I-24 also in southern Illinois. Cullman, Alabama is on I-65 between Birmingham and Huntsville. Martinsville, Indiana is down in southern Indiana off of I-69 (old SR37) going towards Evansville. Vidor, Texas of course is on I-10 between Beaumont and Orange, Texas. I did contract cleaning work at Gifford Pinchot state park for 21 months when they chose to show me that they would kill me by way of hanging. July 2 early am hanging in the basement were a set of park ranger clothes made to look like a dead person. July 9 another hanging this time only a feminine style shirt which had a spotlight shining on it. Other things were done to terrorize me out of the job but these hangings are what told me to leave the job. I told all law enforcement a couple news channels and the PA Human Relations. I entered into counseling and I still see mental health counselors. Im58 and out of all the terroristic threats throughout my life these are the hate crimes that did me in. When people show you that they will kill you believe them because usually they won’t stop trying until they succeed. I wish more stories were done about the modern day hate crimes all new stories from the year 2024. There would probably be a hate crime reported every day of the year

I live in the Deep South. It has VASTLY improved since my childhood during Jim Crow. Before I retired my job had me traveling to a lot of small towns in rural areas. YES! There are still pockets in back woods and back water areas of Texas and Louisiana. You also need to be careful as a black in the Ozarks (Harrison, AR straight up KKK). There are other places that you feel “uncomfortable” passing through in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri (really anywhere in the USA that doesn’t have a major highway passing through it).

I live in a mostly all white town. The people, however, are really kind and nice. Buuuut, last school year my son went to homecoming with a white girl, which was no problem. This girl and her very kind family invited us over for homecoming festivities. The dad, when inviting me over, told me that they'll have fried chicken there, seemingly as a selling point for me to come. Me and my kids took note, for sure. Theeeeen, I get there and the grand dad, who looked as if he'd NEVER even been in the company of a Black person, literally stared at me, mouth open, as I moved through the line to get food. He was behind the table helping serve. After about 4 min of his mouth wide open, and me saying "hello" twice due to the heavy staring, his only words to me were "we got chicken". 😮 He didn't point out any of the other amazing goodies there, just the chicken. Now, by this time, I wanted to turn around to him and say, "well I hope you got watermelon and Kool-aid too, boss". Like, WTF!!! That was disheartening, but I never let it break my stride. Crazy world.

Terre Haute, IN‼️ I got an airbnb here. When I checked in, there were problems immediately like, hot water not working, heat going in and out. The host asked me if I wanted to relocate to an apartment above his garage while he worked on the place. 😐 I went to the store Meijer, the day before Thanksgiving to get some groceries, and people kept starting at us and following us through the store. Someone dropped some watermelon in a few aisles. They kept calling for a watermelon cleanup and laughing over the intercom. I was getting my children out of the car, and some teenagers riding bikes, started running fast and screaming on their bikes, I grabbed my children back (ages 3 and 5) the teenagers passed me and were talking about how they should have floored it on their bikes to knock to knock us over, and how it would have been priceless. I walked into the house and told my children, that it was not fair but we were black and needed to be extra careful. I explained to my oldest, 8 years old, that sometimes things happen, but right now, it is important for us to be careful to make sure that we can live to see each other the next day. I pre-paid for a month, and this has been the worst decision ever!
