The thing that made dragons maze so bad was all the cycles in such a small set, the most aggrigous of those was all the maze runners that gave a key word to multicolored creatures. I actually pulled a foil and regular voice of resurgence from a prerelease pack wich was crazy.

Modern Masters July 7th 2013. Only 9 years ago, and it seems like an eternity. My return to paper Magic after 14 years was actually marked by purchase of Dragons Maze, M13 and Avacyn fat packs. At least one of them was not judged by posterity as failed products.

People say they miss 3 set blocks but Dragon's Maze is one of the reasons why they stopped. people are kinda tired of a setting after 2 sets. Dragon's Maze would have been a bad set at any part of the block but Return to Ravnica felt like a pushed and awesome set, Gatecrash and Dragon's Maze were not nearly as exciting. My friends and I went to the RTR prerelease and had a blast, went to Gatecrash and it was pretty sweet, but were not interested enough to bother with the DRM prerelease or to buy packs of it when there were RTR and Innistrad block packs to be had at the same price. Kinda goes to show there might not be anything terrible about these cards in a vacuum but there is in comparison to the other sets of that era.

Wotc knew that this set was garbage too, so they chucked in some shocklands from another set 😅

For standard it was cool set. But after rotation nothing was playable for modern , legacy. Only Voice of Resurgence for some time and wear//tear. In standard Advent of the Wurm was big deal in Selesnya deck of course as Voice of Resurgence and Aetherling was win condition in UW control. And getting Shock Lands was very rare.

Was it cheaper than the newer set bundles? I've recently bought a Dragon's Maze fat pack here in Poland and it cost me around 20% fewer than a 2022 set's bundle despite being a 2013 set. I was kinda shocked that I was able to get one around 9 years after release. It's such a weird phenomenon.

Only $42 USD! Less than a Commander Legends 2 bundle. They way overprinted this set!

@@MTGUnpacked Aw man, mine was the equivalent of around $28 USD in April this year which is an insanely cheap price considering it's in Poland where oftentimes the bundles of sets still in Standard are near impossible to find in stores or massively overpriced. This says so much about the bad reputation this set has.

Selling for around $50 CAD where I live. A Bundle of Murders at Karlov Manor is only $45 though because it's also a flop haha! Normally Bundles are $60 and Gift Bundles are $90.

Despite the questionable quality of this set in particular bundles/fat packs were way better back then in my opinion.

What makes dragons mage so bad exactly?

It's a combination of things: Mediocre design (for limited), no cards of much value in formats outside the Standard of the time, and it was the 3rd smaller set of a 3-set block and expectations from the first two weren't met. I suspect it may have been a bit overprinted too, which was really a problem for the whole RtR block.
