I had a friend that was trying to sell a house with an unfinished basement. The buyer wanted her to seal the basement and her Realtor told her she had to do it since her house was in the flood plain. The Realtor said that there had to be a way to prevent flooding and then insisted on Sealing the basement was the only choice. I asked my friend when she told me about this why she didn't just use a Sump Pump. Apparently no one had suggested it to her as a cheaper alternative. The Sump Pump got the house up to Code and it sold, with both the buyer and the Realtor unhappy with her. She asked me why this happened and I told her that they obviously wanted to make the basement into livable space and were trying to pass the cost off to her. Her Realtor eager to make a sale went along with them.

I remember a couple of these episodes being heartbreakers though they don't cover it in this clip show. Annie, the girl with CP, had passed away during the failed addition construction (before Mike took the job) and the couple at the end lost their baby girl to a virus before the episode aired.

This life, here on Earth, is a vale of tears. This world, this human condition, here, on this once beauteous, magnificent planet, is in reality the hardest one of what is literally "worlds without number". Having lived here 70+ years, this has the ring of truth.

It made so angry how could these fake subcontractors or inspectors get away with this! About three years ago, I have been through this and I fired the two con artist subcontractors who turned out to be criminals. The main thing is trust your instincts and protect yourself from being manipulated. Like what Mike said, “Take your time to do your homework and background check before hire the right professionals. “ Thank you for sharing your stories.

That's what we were taught in self-defense class. If your instincts tell you that you are in a bad situation, you probably are. Trust your instincts. Absolutely. And definitely fire anyone who seems shady or is doing poor work. You did the right thing. You probably saved yourself no end of problems.

The problem is that it's really hard for an average person to do everything correctly in order to get a good contractor. The average person doesn't exactly know what they're looking for, and while doing research and background checks helps tremendously, people don't always think to do them because it costs a lot of time. Frauds and people who do a shoddy job know to prey on this behaviour, along with a number of other things they take advantage of. We're trained through the media that scammers and criminals are rough, mean people, not polite and charming until the moment of the con. They also prey on the desperate and use high pressure sales tactics. All of this means that while you should protect yourself, it's harder than you might think.

Have you ever been in a basement before the floor was poured? Those posts have a concrete pad under them and they are bolted down to the pad. They are load bearing members and they cannot shift or the whole structure is compromised. Cutting the thing off and moving it two feet where only a 3 inch concrete floor is supporting it is NOT acceptable or safe. When that thing punches a pillar shaped hole in the floor, the whole structure is going to sag.

A basement Jacuzzi sauna/massage relaxing room sound's like a plan. As long as the sauna is a seperate sauna prefabricared unit with good ventilation over the Jacuzzi optional sound system and 48 inch television screen for D.V.D. movie's.

I'm putting together a portable presentation system for work... it has an 85" TV on a cart. Personally I think that's kind of nuts, but that's what they want and it's fun to build.

in a basement? I use a projection TV. way cheaper bigger picture. can be disguised easy and plenty bright. if the projector is ceiling mounted - best out of reach of kids and cats plus can use as a computer monitor for gaming. grab a few good laz-e-boy recliners and pure joy.

re: 32:00 - basement dug out. I was looking for a house when I was shown one that was better off demolised than fixed. first thing they had was they had dug out the basement to try and give him more space but the problem is they've done it wrong. house sides were sinking. if you went outside you could actually see the roof top ridgeline of the entire house bent as if it broken in two. if you have that much structural damage that you can see it from outside you have a lot of internal structural damage. The second thing they had was a floor furnace where the single center cold air dropped down through a hole in the floor straight into the furnace. nowadays totally illegal and had to be replaced. third was the property was next to another one that was using the backyard as a junkyard. That's one house you don't just walk away from, you run away from it

That is an old convection furnace, the heat comes from the middle and the outer registers are returns - they work there are still many in operation where I live, the drawback is the space in the basement is limited by these returns

I don't recommend an Inspector that a Realtor or Contractor recommends. Usually an inspector that a City or County uses, is Legitement.🤔..

Don't ever work without a contract, examined by a reputable, yes expensive, law firm, and don't ever let go of all the money until the job is PROVEN done, + done correctly. This is similar to "Angi", etc. Buyer beware; do ALL research, written documentation from listed govt agencies. There must be full, transparent, legal accountability frameworks + mechanisms!
