why are the homes you built in Regina Saskatchewan not up to code???

Ordinary gypsum drywall on the outside face of a wall? Even the greenest builder knows better! Why else would we use a different product in bathroom shower areas - even when “protected” by tile? “Stone” facing not properly attached? No surprise there. I’ve seen many houses where the brick facing is visibly bowed, or has even fallen apart, for the same reason. For want of a brick tie . . . Putting the fireplace vent where they did shows, first, the way too many trades worry only about “their” codes. It never fails to surprise inspectors, general contractors, everyone when I produce codes other than the one for my trade (electrical). I routinely see other tradesmen violate codes outside of their specialty. For example, plumbers know how to run a drain line, but will compromise the building structure with no hesitation - even when there’s an easy alternate route. Fiberglass isn’t fire rated? That’s news to me. By what standard? Fiberglass, even with paper facing, typically has a Class A flame spread rating (ANSI E84 standard). I’m more concerned about the lack of insulation or other barrier protecting the wood framing in the wall. I also don’t understand the reason for the horizontal duct run - why not vent sooner?

From watching this channel, I have come to the conclusion that most home inspectors are useless. The railing with no spindles was freaky. When my grandson was three, he fell from stairs at a friend's house and cracked his skull on pavement because their outdoor railing had no spindles. I rented a basement suite. When the owner decided to sell the house, the home inspector sniffed and cheerfully said there was no smell of mold. Vunderful! He totally missed seeing the patch of black mold in the corner of the laundry room ceiling.

The house needs a tub on each floor, Sorry I do not want to share my shower/tub space with my kids. 2 carpet is a must. It keeps sound down is warm on the feet and pets hate hardwood flooring.

This is another one I remember when it was first broadcast in the U.S. I remembered what the front of the house looked like before it came on screen. Mike Holmes not only knows construction but how to film a great story.

Does the owner have to pay for all this, or is he donating all of this?

Why would they gut the whole house?! There were a lot of walls they could have kept and spent less to fix it up.

Happy New Year, I can't wait for part two, I love Sarah because like you she loves to teach. You really won't go wrong with her. For the floor, I have carpet in the bedrooms and hardwood for everywhere else. I love it that way because it keeps the noise down and a bit warmer, but I think throw carpets may do the same if the floors are warm. Thank you for this new series is fun to see the two of you working together, the older wiser master of the craft and the younger breath of understanding it is a win/win.

These are good shows, but there's too much manufactured drama, and "unexpected surprises." For example, they pay full price on the prooerty seemingly without getting the plumbing (septic) checked out, decide to put a roof extension on and then hsve "no money" to concrete the barn tloor and insulate it, whilst allowing Mike Jr to (my opinion only) waste money on all those toolboxes, an epoxy floor, fancy chairs and TV. The fireplace is fair enough if someone is working in there during winter, but money needs to be spent on "necessary" stuff like the replacement of the septic field. MJ acts like a little child because Mike Senior doesn't automatically agree with his ideas. Hopefully, as he's married now, and these shows are 6 years old, he's grown up. Seemingly, there's a permit issue with the barn, I can't believe that with 35 years of experience, Mike Senior wouldn't "know everything" about a property before purchasing!!!

I can only imagine how the family feels but to continue making the house specialized for someone who is no longer with them I think is a waste of money, I would have done something else make a memorial in the yard or something but I feel like the family seeing an area designed for their long lost Daughter/Sister is much worse on their mental health you have to move on it is not healthy believe me I have lost 2 best friends it is not but you need to move on.

There's a song called "A Passel of Rogues," and this house seems to be the work of a passel of rogues. Bad electrical, bad plumbing (that drain), bad carpentry (stairs, flooring, window sills), bad inspections... I feel so sorry for this nice young couple.
