SHOEING A DRAFT HORSE! Draft Horse Gets HANDMADE Shoes Done by 4 Man Farrier Team, Team PNW

This video shows the guys shoeing this draft horse with handmade shoes on all four hooves. The class is 2.5 hours long and the time is surely needed! They're competing at a World Championship Blacksmiths Competition in North Carolina in a few weeks and this is part of their preparation as a team. I understand using a file to smooth & shape the cut edges, but why do you use a file to thin the hoof walls? How does a thin hoof support the horse better?

It’s not that we’re thinning out the hoof per day but it’s dressing out any distortion in the hoof capsule. There’s tell tale signs that we see as farriers for when it’s necessary to dress the hoof back with a file.

Think about a horses foot as a 3 dimensional object. if you only trim it from one side you can end up short there but long on the other side. So therefore you need to trim it proportionally all the way around. I also often say its like packing a snow ball, you need to bring it in from all directions
