I thoroughly loved this 10 episode series. I totally agree that this is awesome in presentation. A real masterpiece, I loved the growth of Blackstone's character from beginning to end. Mariko helped to establish the narrative of the series. As the narrator pointed out the fact Blackstone had to meld with a culture he was totally unfamiliar with. From the first encounter with Mariko being confused of his reluctance to bathing, to the scene where he decides to visit the hot springs, with her thankfulness that he beginning to understand personal hygiene. Even her slipping into his bed chamber later that night further begins to channel his acceptance of the Japanese culture. Yet, all of her actions were done to further Toranaga's plan. Just as Toranaga knew, they slept together all to further indoctrinate Blackstone into their culture. Brilliant script!

I loved the show more than I thought I world considering the subtitles. Best show ever, no.... but really, really high on my list. Good ending.

Mariko’s eightfold fence echos in John as he tries to keep it together. Epic storytelling. Him understanding why someone would want to sacrifice their own life to make a difference in death for those of the living is fascinating as well. The parallels and contrasts so beautifully done. Thanks for reliving these beautiful moments of this story. A great person leads a nation not because they wants to, but because it’s their duty to make the world better. It’s a complex character who is doing what they must sacrificing his most beloved people for the benefit of the nation and the people as a whole.

9:10 not showing the battle wasn't solely for budget reasons, as the source material handles it exactly the same way. The book ends right as they set off for a battle that Toranaga has already won.

I find it interesting, that in the beginning of the show, we are told numerous times that Blackthorne really wanted to reach Japan and manipulated his Dutch crew and captain into getting there. The dream within a dream reveals that Blackthorne has changed his mind, that his deepest desire now is to return home and live out the rest of his life there. He lets this fantasy go before his attempt at seppuku, and also in letting go of Mariko's cross. I think part of him knows that he will never leave Japan, but in raising the Erasmus he is playing along with Toranaga that he may one day leave if only he can build that fleet they talk about from time to time.

Wasnt the biggest clue it wasnt a flash forward that he dropped the cross in the water, but is holding the same cross in the dream.

Such a great analysis, thanks. Not since Station 11 have I watched a series that has stayed with me so long after each episode has ended. The subtleties, the world building, the skill and heart of the acting and direction. I've watched some fan videos of the original 80s Shogun, with so many comments from folks who are outraged at the new series, and they are just laughable. Like, in one people were complaining about the fact that 'Mariko doesn't have broken English' in the new series, and how that's not 'historically correct'. Meanwhile, in the 80s series Richard Chamberlain sounds exactly like an 80s actor from LA. I mean, there is nothing more to say.

It is absolutely a blessing that the show is only one season, It's like rome from h b o only having two seasons. It. Is self-contained and beautiful and untouched. In both cases and can't be ruined by defiling itself the way Game of Thrones. Or boardwalk empire did. Both of which began Circling the drain of self parody By the fourth season.

the way that they only make it 1 season 10 episodes is also a nod Japan character. If its Hollywood (Americans with love of excess), they'd make it longer and no use. 1 season is perfect, enough and not greedy.

This whole series was epic in all senses of the word. It didn't need a climatic battle scene which would have been the antitheses of the series which was based around nuance and subtlety. When thoughts could be shown by the twitch of an eye or mouth who needs an army of cgi battling it out. When Toranaga's second spy, Yabushige's scribe, is revealed by a subtle framing in episode 1 when linked to a comment in episode 10 you know you have brilliant film making. There are now rumours swirling of a second series (never doubt money will move idiots), I can only hope that the same level of planning and commitment goes into any production that this series had. As an afterthought, it would be better to make any second series a prequel rather than a sequel as the only character you would not need is Blackthorne as really, the first series was about him and his interactions with the Japanese characters. Besides, I want Juji-sama back and not as a nun.

This show leans close to reality, and I think when it comes to the real life, there is usually no clear line between hero and villain but more about perspectives. To some people Toranaga/Tokugawa was the villain but to others he’s the one that unites the country. To shape the world one has to make choices that beyond the clear line of good and bad.
@alexbanks71156 ай бұрын
I don’t think the shogun was a villain per se however I was less enamored of him as a story went on when I realized how truly ruthless he was, and achieving his goals. Also, an episode 10 I had a call back to when they said the man at the top is the loneliest man in the world because in my opinion that was definitely him he gave up almost everything he loved, and everyone he trusted to achieve his victory and now we have to live with it or live in it and that’s got to be lonely.

If you love shogun and you want to see a TV show. Equally brilliant, you should watch hBo's rome season one and two The master deceptions of toronaga Reminded me A lot of octavian in season, two of rome. Both men we're treacherous, Machiavellian and brilliant in their deceptions. And both men did so out of a desire to create their own long period of peace, in octavians case, the pax romana

But once Blackthrone served his purpose why was he not allowed to return to England?
@tygirwulf6 ай бұрын
Toranaga tells Yabushige that the Pilot makes him laugh, that Toranaga had no other real use for him. That's why Blackthorne won't be allowed to leave, because Toranaga is ruthless enough not to think twice about using another man for amusement. You notice in the show they don't ever give him the courtesy of using his name or giving him a Japanized name, he's always called "Lord Pilot" which sounds to me as if they never quite take him seriously as a person.
@andypham1451Ай бұрын
It's simply that he likes having Blackthorne around and refuses him of leaving Japan. After Hiromatsu, Nagakado, Mariko, Yabushige are gone, all Toranaga has left out of his vassals is Blackthorne. I can see the "he makes me laugh" quote not only comes across as sadistic but it's taken too literally. Another person that can make people laugh is friends. To Toranaga after saving him from Osaka and the earthquake, he does see Blackthorne as a friend. It's just a Toranaga way of communicating.
