Just a note: the reason why Buntaro refused the confrontation with Blackthorne is the fact he dusturbed the “wa” of the Anjin’s house. Wa means harmony and peace, and Japanese is highly suspicious if anything disturbs it. Buntaro, as a guest of Anjin, has a duty to keep and preserve the “wa” and his fight with his wife, which he started, disturb that fact and thus, he should take full responsibility for it. In the book, Buntaro actually knelt and bowed because this is a serious offense in Japan at that time.

I liked how the relationship between John and Fuji developed in this episode. They are slowly getting very close to each other and showing a lot of mutual respect. Fuji saying she is not consort to the "Anjin", but rather the "Hatamoto", for instance, and then when John holds her hand, after the earthquake, followed by her watching him re-erect the stone in the garden, spoke volumes. I look forward to seeing more of John and Fuji interacting.

yes Fuji have her own strength. Im surprised at her in episode 4 when she yelled to Anjin requesting the guns, then pointing the gun to Omi. When Anjin mad at all the housekeepers after the gardener's death, i wonder if they know what Anjin's word, do they mistakenly he is mad because the bird is gone or the death of the gardener?

@@dannyanggawan I think Fuji, and the other house staff, probably understood that he was upset by the death of the gardener. He was able to say enough Japanese, combined with his body language, that they knew.

@@fishypaw yes, i watched it again, he mixed it with japanese vocab. But the final rage when he dismiss them all, they dont really catch it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but that little kid is not becoming the new emperor. His dad is Taiko which means retired regent. As I recall, his dad can't become Shogun, because he was not from a noble bloodline, so he was called Taiko. On the other hand, I believe that there is an emperor in current story, but Emperor is just a figure head throughout the whole Japanese history, and they always lived in Kyoto. The one who usually had the real power and controlled the military power would be Shogun. If that kid can beome a Shogun or not, I have no idea, but he was not the next emperor.

I’ve read or watched somewhere that Hideyoshi(Taiko) can’t be a Shogun because he has no noble bloodline but he became the Prime Minister of Japan at that time. He wanted his successor can be a Shogun so he created his own clan. The Toyotomi Clan, thus his son can be a Shogun. Then when he’s dying, he chose 5 most of his strongest Generals to take over Japan by divided to 5 territories for each Generals and Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) chosen by Hideyoshi to take care of his son. Yeah you have to be seiwa genji clan to be shogun. Tokugawa faked his genealogy (plus had a huge army) so he was appointed shogun, officially by the emperor..a figurehead politically but powerful morally

This series has me in a headlock especially the writing, the acting and the dialogue itself! You actually felt the intensity at dinner on whether to translate correctly 😅🤦🏾‍♂️😵‍💫😵‍💫

Read Shogun almost 50 yrs ago, didn't come to realize it was absolutely based on an truly extraordinary real man, till decades later! His intelligence and adaptability changed Japan like few other foreigners! (Wikipedia, covers much of his life, and choices!)

The swords are so important. A samurai would be dishonored. By giving him the swords it gave meaning to Fuji's family swords. Blackthorn honored his leige and consort simultaneously without he himself losing face

I actually believed that every Japanese character was very bewildered by the act of Blackthorne. That a "barbarian" has finally understood the meaning of Japanese symbolism and ritual. Now, the "bad omen" swords are the swords of the Shogun, given by the babarian who saved his life.
