I haven't read the book, so I don't know what will happen next. But my guess is that Toranaga and his half-brother Saeki have a secret plot to double-cross Ishido. Toranaga is pretending to "surrender" to his half-brother and allow himself to be "escorted" back to Osaka Castle--this way, Toranaga is able to avoid the very dangerous task of trying to fight his way to Osaka with a smaller army against a larger floe. Once at Osaka Castle, Saeki will reveal the double-cross and side with Toranaga with his full army at the gates of Osaka. That's my current theory. So it is actually providence that causes Toranaga's son's foot to slip and save Saeki from being killed by the son who doesn't know the plan, and was trying to murder Saeki. What do the others think of my idea?

The plan is obviously getting to the gates of the castle, he can't do that as an attack, so living a long life he hasn't come this far be surrendering now, episode 8 and i am spot on

I agree. According to my Japanese student who’s from Osaka, Ieyasu’s army is relatively small compared to Mitsunari’s but before the battle of Sekigahara, Ieyasu made some deals and some of his enemies defected to his side.

Why the f*** must they display Blackthorn as beeing unable to fence? He is the pilot of a ship sailing under a letter of marque...he would know how to fence and would have been in a number of fights. And here is doesn't even get the basics

This episode does not follow the book. Not at all….Only one scene was appreciated: the stick of passing time conversation between Gin & Toranaga. Overall feeling about this episode: let down & disappointed with screen writers.

they succesfully toying with our emotion. After wait for a week for this episode, watching Toranaga's surrender feels like a dissappointment. I wish i see his maneuvre, but not.
