Game is hung in order to allow the bird to go into and come out of rigor motis. Apparently this changes the flavor and takes anywhere from several hours to several day depending on the temperature and the amount of damage to the bird. Nowadays they hang the birds in a climate controlled refrigerator. As an analog, prime steak is left to hang/age for weeks. That said, I haven't read anything about letting birds or any other game rot to the point of fly eggs growing to maggots. James Clavell did like to write about things having maggots. This was written in the '70s so maybe he added some literary license for the shock value.

I wouldn't eat that rotting bird. Hanging it like that in a un-controlled enviorment, that bird was covered in flies. I'm sure it became filled with maggots, just gross!

In the book Buntaro was portraited to be more complex of a character. Mariko and him were married before her father betrayed the tyrannical lord. So they actually had a pretty happy marriage for a while. After Mariko's father's betrayal, Buntaro became greatly resentful of Mariko, but also still loves her. Him forbidding Mariko to die is also due to both his love and resentment for her.

They are married before her father’s betrayal in the show as well. I do wish they would go deeper into Buntaro’s story because although he is unlikeable he is interesting to watch.

I agree Blackthorne definitely still has some growing to do in terms of understanding the Japanese culture, but I really liked how they handled the scene following the landslide where he witnessed the villagers all helping each other. Juxtaposed against his earlier claims that the Japanese do not value life, it seems like he is starting to understand that is absolutely not the case. And he damn well better have checked on Fuji. 😭

im sorry but i think you have some weird hollywood view of europe in the 1600's. The writing is pretty much in pair with how blackthorn would react to how the japanese values honour above life. Also just a fun fact the first version of "divorce" came about around that time period in europe among the Protestant churches.
