Agree trev is fantastic and compassionate in this. But people up in arms about jomboys gambling ads is what I dont agree with. Yes I absolutely feel any addiction is horrible. Legal betting is still much safer. It can still be a huge problem but ultimately it's is up to us to be responsible with it and use moderation; we should talk about the issue and try to get help for those who need it but not crucify creators who have gambling ads. Those are what fund the content we love that these guys work hard to put out.

@@mikayocc my problem is people don't get so outraged about alcohol ads during games or podcasts. I will never forget how many Americans were the first to decide that Ohtani was the bad guy in this incident, and that they felt sorry for Ippei. Furthermore, even when the truth came to light, everyone continued to baselessly believe the ESPN article about how they had been fooled by a liar and a fraudster, and blamed Ohtani for trusting Ippei too much. I can clearly see that they just want to denigrate Ohtani without even reading the complaint.
@yamazone4887
@yamazone4887 Ай бұрын
A few indications that Ohtani never cared about his account and money: 1. In Japan, he chose to stay in the rookie dorm facilities beyond his rookie year; 2. Gave his entire salary to his mom who would give him a monthly stipend of $900 (I get more today with my salary). By the end of 2 years doing this, he had saved almost his entire stipend. So not only was he not spending the bulk of his salary, he had spent like $2,000 or something silly like that over the course of 2 years; 3. If he waited for 2 more years before coming to US he would have a contract like Yamamoto ($345mi), instead he opted for the min salary plus bonus. Funny thing is the Angels had to pay $20mi to the japanese team for the transfer (almost 10x more than his first year salary + bonus). In the end of 6 years Ohtani received from the Angels a little over $42mi in the account that Ippei had access. 4. HE ASKED to defer the maximum he could of his new contract to give space to other players in the Dodgers team. So for 10 years he will get only $20m from his contract. The other $680mi will be paid in the 10 years after 2034. So would he check this specific bank account when he got Ippei working as a manager for him since 2013? Ohtani would probably only ask Ippei to pay for whatever he need it. After all those examples, if Shohei said that he never accessed the bank account since coming to US, I would believed him. And about Ippei being a bad guy, gambling is an addiction. It's more like a disease than being a bad person. In his mind probably he thought he could win the money back with extra. That's how addiction works.

Ohtani’s way of awarding himself when he played well during his Nippon Ham Fighter’s time was stopping at Seven Eleven for his favorite dessert, a chocolate crepe (probably about a buck), on the way to his team dormitory. 😂 While making over a million already, he chose to live in a dorm. That’s another proof that he never cared about spending money but just wanted to focus on baseball. By the way, with the current exchange rate, he was only receiving $670/mo from his mom. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 A high school kid can make more money these days. 😅

I think a lot of Jomboy and Talkin Baseball fans would love to see you guys own up to this a little more often with Draft Kings getting plugged on every episode. The talkin was great as always but addiction takes many forms and it needs to be handled with compassion and nuance. Whether it's Ipei or Ohtani they are clearly struggling and our society continues to crush and punish addicts instead of trying to help and rehabilitate them. If your loved one has an addiction to something, I hope you show them compassion and believe in the non-linear path to recovery.

5:45 You got it right. The criminal complaint says this account was set up in 2018 to receive his baseball salary but NEVER accessed by Shohei. Ippei also lied to the Nez financial team that Shohei wanted this account to be private and refused to give them to access. The only person who had accessed this account was Ippei, and we know this now because the online banking system recorded the device ID and IP address of the devices (mobile, PC, etc) when logging in, and all device IDs and IP address belong to Ippei's devices.

Shohei has many accounts. This one is the first account he opened as a salary account 2018. Ohtani never used this account other than let salary come into it. But the account was never used since 2018. Shohei rapidly had other accounts opened by the staff and he was connected and managed with those. Remember, when he opened that first 2018 in haste to have his first account so the Angels could register.

First of all, TV shows and movies meant for kids don't typically have casinos in them, but sports are specifically marketed to kids and are filled with gambling ads. And second, a movie with a casino in it isn't trying to convince people to start gambling, but sports betting ads are.

The real issue is accessibility, having to drive 1-3 hours to go to a casino deters most people from becoming habitual gamblers. Sports betting takes place on a virtual app, for the most part, bets can be placed in less than a minute.

The evidence and allegations presented puts Ippei in a pretty terrible light, and I'm sure that the recent rumors that he is trying to work out a plea deal are true, because I don't know if Clarence Darrow himself could defend him. There's a slim chance that he started doing this out of desperation because his addiction put him in a huge hole (started out with $10 bets but that ballooned to hundreds of thousands), but the fact that he impersonated Shohei to set up wire transfers, or that he sent winnings to his account rather than Shohei's really make him look like the worst scumbag, and it's no wonder the Dodgers and Shohei fired him immediately. Like bro you made _all_ the wrong moves. If Ippei is able to work out a deal with the Feds, I would hope that addiction counseling and treatment is a major part of it if it's within the power of the judge. I don't think he's going to prison for an extended period of time, certainly not the maximum sentence of 30 years (that's not how federal sentencing works). And it's certainly going to be a cautionary tale not just about the addiction, but also the management of players where English isn't their first language. I think MLB is going to stipulate that there be more accountability and transparency when it comes to interpreters and life managers, because we just can't have a single point of contact where one dude can abuse his position like this. And to reiterate to some folks in sports commentary: 3, count 'em, _three_ federal agencies are saying Shohei is the victim in this scandal, and they had access to all the stuff that no one but Shohei and Ippei had up until the press conference. Sometimes investigations and indictments take a lot of time, and usually that's because suspects and witnesses don't want to talk to the feds (this is a good thing, law enforcement should _prove_ that they need access to our stuff and our testimony). But this is an unusual case because Shohei really did have nothing to hide, and the feds determined that he was clean. I know there's going to be people who insist Shohei is dirty, and they are entitled to their opinions and their doubts. But that scenario is now in "Apollo hoax" conspiracy territory, there are just too many people who have to be involved in the cover-up for that conjecture to be real. There is no evidence that Shohei was involved in placing or paying for bets, and those who believe this really should come up with actual evidence aside from, "I would notice millions of dollars missing". Otherwise they're effectively saying that 3 federal agencies are in on the plot, which is just an insane take.

As for their comments about how Shohei didn’t notice the money was gone, we have no idea about most of the inner workings of the relationships between translators and players. They likely do have access to a lot of personal information. They have to in order to do their job. Unless I missed something, they definitely aren’t treating Shohei like a criminal.

When did they treat him like a criminal? They were questioning a wild story with no answers when it first came out. Think its fair to have questions

It's crazy to think that if Ippei just transferred the money to his account from the start instead of using it to bet he could possibly still be doing it and even maybe getting away with it 😂.

There for his name would not have been in any investigation because he would not have used it to bet he would have just been stealing money from Shohei!! "Already earning a high salary in his early 20s when playing in Japan, he stayed at the Hokkaido Nippon Ham-Fighters dormitory, usually occupied by rookie players. All of his earnings went to his parents, who managed his finances while giving him an allowance of just US$1,000 a month, according to USA Today". "He's an absolute baseball rat". It’s $16 million out of Sho’s accounts that are receiving $70 million annually from sponsors, and gradually over years. Dane Cook’s half brother similarly trusted took him for 15 mil

you are wrong. the account ippei was stealing from was the account MLB deposited shohei’s salary earnings into. shohei has many other accounts for his investments and endorsements. this is an important fact to get right.
