Thank you David. I wish I could take more credit, other than just opening my wallet. I also have a third JWP which recently put out masses of tiny purple flower buds but is looking a bit shabby at the moment after I removed them. Pines are still a bit of an alien species to me which I am still learning how to maintain.

@@TheBonsaiGarden yep! This morning I went to visit David Benavente's bonsai garden, I have just seen the most beautiful pines I have seen in my life! Incredible. My wallet doesn't stretch even to the pots they were in, let alone the trees. I was close to tears at one point! I'll post some photos on Flickr later.

Excellent display of bonsai specimens.. I am trying to grow some from cuttings and seeds.. but it seems that it`s taking forever. This hobby is very nice but so slow at the same time. Takes iron patience to develop bonsai. Should I go find trees out in the woods or get them from a supplier instead?

There are four ways of getting trees: 1. Grow from seed. Is very satisfying, gives you a greater sense of ownership and control but realistically takes decades to achieve a quality result. 2. Find and style something already grown from a garden centre or nursery. May give you a 3-5 year head start over growing from seed. In the UK places like The Woodland Trust can supply young trees at fair prices. 3. Buy a bonsai tree from a bonsai nursery - will mean the tree has been at least partially styled but you will pay a premium and have less of an influence in the tree. 4. Acquire a yamadori/wild grown tree. This will provide a rugged wild tree with age to work on but be sure to get permission from the land owner. There are some moral questions about taking trees from the wild since if everyone did it, there would be no wild trees.
