You know, I really miss this guy. It’s bittersweet to hear him planning about the future of his bonsai, but knowing what it says about the quality of a man’s character to stay committed to what he loves despite circumstances. I hope that those who have his bonsais remember to every once in a while, maybe post a video about what happened to this or that tree. I ‘d like to think he’s still enjoying them… RIP from the US Tony!

Yeah they're not really my cup of tea Adam but it's always nice to try something different. I only ever wanted it for cuttings, but fortunately my dad likes the tree so it's his now

Tony, I need to take a leaf out of your book so to speak. I keep meaning to take cuttings before pruning but never do. So many free plants on the compost heap. 😕 Thanks for the update & enjoy the rest of your day. All the very best, Nick

Nice, and a good reminder that my Central Park Chinese elms are getting quite leggy. Mmm, more cuttings to get started. It’s in my genes. I get it from my mom.

Cork Bark Chinese elm are such beautiful small bonsai trees with lovely craggy bark. I have two and they are a couple of my favourite trees - so vigorous and easy to look after and convincingly to scale with their twiggy branches and tiny leaves. 😊

It's an interesting one as I'm not sure I'm sold on the bark. I think I prefer the standard Chinese elm.

@@TonysBonsai I definitely love my Cork bark elms over my regular Chinese elms. Just adds that extra element of character and age, but in all other respects they are exactly the same. They make super little bonsai trees.
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Жыл бұрын
Yeah, no doubt they make good bonsai perhaps for me the bark is almost one element too far for my tastes like the extra taper, but thinking about it I do like the smooth bark of a less mature hawthorn too

Should these be kept indoors in winter as they are often sold as indoor trees? I have a funny diet and am experimenting making choc ices from greek yoghurt, and separately cottage cheese, it is just about keeping me good. You two enjoy yours. Xxx keep growing.xx

Love the gnarly trunk - super shape! I've never seen Chinese cork bark elm before - do you find the bark looks a lot different than regular Chinese elm? Thanks for that massive tease with the ice cream lol!!
@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Жыл бұрын
Hi Sue. Yes the barkis definitely very different. Personally I would say that I prefer the smoother bark of a normal Chinese elm myself, but in terms of looking old, the cork bark definitely wins

Nice and tidy Tony. I see a bottle brush plant behind where you were working today. How about styling that? The reason I ask is I've got a similar sized one and I haven't got a clue what to do with it. Need inspiration.

Cheers Kevin. it's really interesting that you say that. Only yesterday we were looking through random plants to work on. Which one is the bottle brush? I know what they look like in flower but not in term of the leaves?

@@TonysBonsai it's in a terracotta coloured pot on the ground to the left of the camera in this mornings elm video. Long slender leaves. Red(bottle brush) flowers when in bloom.

@TonysBonsai
@TonysBonsai Жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. It's a bit jarring, but I'm hoping that given time it will mellow out and take on a more natural look probably a good 4-6 years, but it should happen as it thickens.Then again the next custodian might like a praying mantis style tree and embrace it as part of the design. I like either options

Lots of funin todays video but Whattston are probably the best for quality bonsai and shipping in the country (my opinion). I am glad you removed that branch and I might have taken a few of the others lower down - they are what will make the best cuttings right now. i would just put a half cut plastic drinks bottle over the plant pot to get some humidity. I think that to be a Shohin ice cream it needs to be another few cm taller - someone obviously took the apex off :)
