In this video we talk about how to draw speedlines. But also how speedlines are not the only way to show movement in manga and comics.

For drawing movement such as running, I think that looking at videos for reference could be a great source for artist. You can always scrub through the motion and find the frame that is the most exaggerated in its action.

Yeah, definitely. The hardest part is to find the right kind of video.

Thank you for another amazing tutorial/explaination! I draw my pages digitally so I tend to draw my speed lines with black and go over the top with white pen layer! This video defo made be more aware on how long to draw motion lines and keep the shape of the arm example still visable so thank you! Special ruler saves so much time for drawing speed lines or background effects that don't require an arc shape! Thanks!

I watched this again, just to refresh myself and I got to the part where you said. "It can be tempting to use speedlines more often for any kind of movement because they look cool..." and I started imagining if Zach Snyder made a comic. O_O

Ahaha although I imagine he would use a a ton of slow motion close up shots

He would use speed lines but also somehow would make the comic slow motion. Like, 2 pages across 8 panels to show one punch.

If you draw digitally you can use a circular ruler. If you drawing traditionally you might use a circle (the Tool, not sure what it's called in English) and draw a couple of circles as orientation and then fill the gaps free hand.
