Anyways, off the top-of-my-head: one of my favourite positive character arcs is Captain Kirk's from 'Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan.' In it Kirk goes from dwelling on his lost glory days as a Captain to learning humility, suffering a grevious personal loss, and connecting with a son he never knew...and this renews more than any victory in space as he finds a newfound meaning to his life. It's often overlooked because the sequels end up reversing that, and fans seem to focus on the confrontation with Khan more than anything else. But it's a wonderful example of humanizing a character through their flaws and I found it quite touching. Favourite negative character arc? Probably Michael Corleone in the first two Godfather films, as he goes from being the most promising member of his family to a ruthless mobster, even though his father didn't want that for him. It also helps that 'The Godfather Part II' offers some great examples of visual storytelling to accentuate that moral decay, like the cooler colour palette in Michael's offices in Nevada or revisiting the House from the first movie, but it's unfamiliar and unwelcome looking.

Your comment about the difficulties of the second season reminded me of a similar observation my favourite film and TV crtic made: a "perfect" first season is often difficult to follow-up on because by necessity you have to change what people loved about in order to move the story forward. (The highly acclaimed drama 'The Wire' faced this very problem as it expanded the scope of the story to show more of the City of Baltimore.)

Yes! Especially series with a mystery element suffer from that problem. Perfect 1st seasons are a blessing and a curse.
