Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.

This song is absolutely beautiful and amazing! Shon, I was in college in 67 when I first heard this. I honestly didn't understand the meaning of the song either. All I know is that I felt it in my soul. And Gary Booker is was only a couple of years older than me. Then to hear this song years later with the orchestra and choir takes it to another level! And Gary's voice was just as good as ever except more seasoned. Great reaction!

Now you can see why the original was number one worldwide in 1967. This version is elevated by the orchestra and the choir a masterpiece. One of the greatest songs from the 60s.

Great reaction, Shon. SUBSCRIBED. Honestly, the song writer (who was NOT the singer, Gary Brooker, who wrote the music for the song) denies that the song is about anything in particular. But personally? I don't buy it. There's too much description in the song that indicates a break-up between a man and a woman. And, in addition, "The Miller's Tale" (in the song the verse is "as The Miller told his tale") in the English Lit classic "The Canterbury Tales" is about infidelity where a wife sleeps with another man who isn't her husband. It's just too much of a coincidence to be a song about nothing in particular. And you picked up on it, Shon. Props to you. (In the song-writers defense, maybe he wrote about something very, very personal in the words of this song and later regretted "airing his dirty laundry" as it were and decided to just say it was a song about nothing in particular. Again, I don't buy it.)

I never paid that much attention to what songs meant back then. My mom told me when I'd ask what they were singing about she'd say it's a "nonsense " song. I now think she avoided the truth. Lol.

First vinyl I bought.. Procol Harum. I feel so old. Gary Brooker is about 63 in this rendition...he sounds better than he did then. Unfortunately, Gary passed last year. But his voice and song writing makes this song iconic

This song is a treasure. So many interpretations of the lyrics, and we each have to figure it out on our own. Gary's strong raspy voice lasted his whole life and he brought so much joy to his fans. A class act and fans for life❤ RIP Gary❤

I'm glad you covered this version of the song. I discovered it myself on KZbin a few years ago. I have always loved this song even though it's from my parent's generation. I can't imagine anywhere else I would rather be than at that concert. The setting is magical and the orchestra is beautiful. Gary Brooker was at that time over 60 years old and his voice is pure gold.
