I was a HUGE Duran Duran fan. In 1984 my BFF and I had it all figured out: I was gonna marry Nick, she would marry John, and we'd buy huge houses next to eachother. Ah, the plans of youth. As I got older (and hormones settled) i replayed all their albums and in a new light I realized their genius.

Duran Duran was initially dismissed as just a bunch of pretty boys but with incredible hits like this song they survived for four decades. Their appeal lies in their incredible hooks, layered sound, great concert presence and courage to tackle dark subjects. Love and respect, my shirtless brother, hog fam Canada 🇨🇦 ❤

Perfect summary ❤ They are the Kings of the Chorus! Did you see the vid project Nick worked on with another photographer for their song: The Edge of America? (w/respect to tough topics; regardless, that has become 1 of my fav tracks since my adult brain took over 🤓) They released it in 2018 for the song/album's 30th anniversary. I have a genetic disorder that messes with my memory & ability to talk, it's episodic but annoying, so it's not unusual for me to mess up details… So I think there's an article by Rolling Stones & they have that vid on their YT Channel. Duran Duran was not "initially" dismissed as a bunch of pretty boys. They were regarded as an up & coming band with a fans that primarily consisted of club-goers, college students & those who listened to alternative music. It took a couple of years when the band started to get more of a "teenage girl" following for some music critics to notice & those music critics, many, but not all, who did not respect the band grew up listening to the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin & the like. So, is it really even worth making a reference about this in regards to being dismissed? Those critics were biased to begin with.

Ordinary World (1992) is the second song in a trilogy that provides a window, per say, into Simon Le Bon's evolution in processing the death of his close & childhood friend, David Miles. He had passed five years prior in 1986. And to add, Ordinary World was also inspired by the The Gulf War (1990-91). The song that begins the trilogy is Do You Believe in Shame? from the band's Big Thing album (1988) & this song, lyrically, is a bit rawer in a sense since it was inspired soon after Miles' death. The song that concludes the trilogy is Out Of My Mind from Duran Duran's Medazzaland album (1997).

Duran Duran has one of the deepest back catalogs you can actually journey in to, as this track was one of their later ones. Being a kid of the 70's & 80's, this band was the "eighties" to me, as their sound and videos could only have come from that decade(the band I associate most with MTV). Ordinary World is a much more mature sounding song, and for sure shows the bands growth over the years, as you can't label this 80's. But for a good amount of people, their best songs came from that period, and they even got the honor of doing a Bond theme in 85, and with no bias I can say it is one of the best. A killer band that has endured the test of time, as they are still touring and making new music.

This was early to mid 90s on their comeback album 93 I think….. they was HUGE in the mid 80s…. When people talk about bands like one direction a few years ago breaking America - you could times it by 10 then 10 again and your probably not even close to realising their popularity …. 2 videos I’d like you to possibly react to would be the wild boys official video - this was released in 84 at the height of their popularity and it’s such an unusual song…. The video to the song is way way way ahead of its time…. I’ve never seen anything like it since …. When you consider this was 40 years ago just makes it more amazing - I think it cost £1m to make and I dread to think what that would equate to these days……. The 2nd is is there something I should know but make sure it’s from the concert as the lights go down which is a live performance from their American tour of 1984… their stage presence is literally off the scale and you get a picture of their popularity from the crowd
@billw7159 ай бұрын
Ordinary World was released in the fall of 1992 & this track was not from a comeback album & One Direction is not a good example to use because Duran Duran is actually a band and a band that formed themselves, who also write their own songs & play their own instruments. They are not a group of singers contrived & put together by music producers.

Great group imo, love this song and Come Undone fr same album. Rio, Notorious, The Reflex, Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film and A View to a Kill (007 Bond theme) were popular.
@billw7159 ай бұрын
Duran Duran have been around since 1981 and are still making albums and touring so "later" when referring to a song that came out in 1992 is hardly accurate. In addition, Duran Duran had songs considered "mature" in 1986 with Skin Trade, in 1988 with Do You Believe In Shame?, Land, Palomino & Too Late Marlene. Ordinary World is an extension of this process of "mature Duran Duran" as they were getting older from their teens and into their late twenties & early thirties. Just like The Beatles who sound in the early 1960s through the latter 1960s evolved into a "mature Beatles sound."

A few others to consider checking out are - The Reflex, probably their biggest hit. - Rio - Do You Believe In Shame, another song for lost friends. - Notorious will make you want to dance - Reach Up for the Sunrise For a slightly naughtier taste there is - Bedroom Toys, it’s nothing explicit that would get you in trouble.

Duran Duran was not one of the biggest bands at the time when Ordinary World was released in 1992. Duran Duran was one the biggest band during the mid-1980s. Ordinary World is the second song of a trilogy relating to Simon Le Bon's friend's passing in 1986. It is also a song that was inspired by The Gulf War (1990-1991). The first song of the trilogy begins with Do You Believe In Shame? (1988) & concludes with Out Of My Mind (1997).

The band's fan base was started by club-goers, people into alternative music & by college students. The band's fan base evolved several years later predominantly into a teen-age girl fan base. However, despite being over shadowed by this fan base, the club-goers, people into alternative music & college students were still prevalent fans of the band. The fan transformation was & is bizarre but that's what can happen to a group of good-looking musicians who were teenagers & into their early twenties themselves. The Beatles & The Rolling Stones lived a parallel existence/evolution in regards to their fan base as well.

I always took it as a break up song, reminds me of my struggle to get over my ex wife. But that's one of the great things about music means different things to different people.
@billw7159 ай бұрын
Typically, Simon Le Bon, the vocalist & main lyricist for Duran Duran, doesn't reveal the meaning of his lyrics/songs. He wants the listener to come up with their own interpretations. However, with Ordinary World, the lyrics & its main theme were inspired by another level of emotions since the song deals with the loss of his close & childhood friend, David Miles, who passed away in 1986. Le Bon's been open about the struggles he's processed with losing Miles over the years. The song was also lyrically inspired by The Gulf War (1990-1991). Ordinary World is a part of trilogy of songs that centers around the loss of Miles. The trilogy begins with Do You Believe In Shame? from Duran Duran's Big Thing album (1988) & written soon after Miles' passing & concludes with Out Of My Mind, ten years later, from Duran Duran's Medazzaland album (1997).

The song does not talk about a woman, or a love, but about the life in fame that he knew and disappeared entering to a new era of music with his band wich wasn't a #1 selling band anymore. Beautiful existentialist song.

Simon later clarified that it was about a friend who died of an overdose. But he also does say that it can be interpreted in many different ways as well.

Hey Shon check out Save A Prayer by this band. Great song. I think you'd enjoy it. 2Cor4:18. Bob Moore. Charlotte NC. PS. I love your passion for music I grew up on (I'm 62). You're a top tier reactor because your genuine love for great music comes thru the screen.

Edit You have now opened one of my favorite cans of worms. Try everything from these bands, but start with: Depeche Mode - It's No Good, Enjoy the Silence Siousxie and the Banshees - Kiss Them for Me, Cities in Dust The Cure - Just Like Heaven, Pictures of You Another Durran Durran song you should check out: Come Undone Don't judge me, I love tons of different genres of music, but I was a kinderbat in the 90s.

I don't think Depeche Mode has a song called Come Undone. Did you mean to add another Duran Duran suggestion with Come Undone?
@renlyspeach76229 ай бұрын
@billw715 *facepalm* thank you. Fixing it now.

@@renlyspeach7622 No facepalm necessary- means you're human & you've got great taste with all of your suggestions. Can't go wrong with any of those songs listed. Cheers. 🙂

For a more light-hearted and fun Duran Duran song, check out "Rio" and "Hungry Like The Wolf".

Simon Lebon the boys...excellent. Listen to Rio or Hungry Like the Wolf. Also did a James Bond theme song.

According to an interview I saw with him, Simon LeBon wrote this after one of his good (best?) friends committed suicide.
@billw7159 ай бұрын
The band wrote the song which includes Le Bon but as the band's vocalist & main lyricist, he wrote the lyrics. With Ordinary World, the lyrics & its main theme were inspired by another level of emotions since the song deals with the loss of his close & childhood friend, David Miles, who passed away in 1986.

Your second pronouncement was correct, but if you're like this one, they've got so many more but my favorites are Rio and say a prayer and white lines cover and come undone and I'm sure there's some others that I'm forgetting that I really like but they have a lot of stuff including I think two or three songs that were the theme songs to the James Bond movies

Great song, but you're missing out on all of their awesome 80s music. They have an extensive catalog that spans over 40 years. So much more to hear from them. Their more recent music is also great.
