Anime War Arcs are trash. So why are War Arcs so popular in Manga? Just some new recommendations for how to write a good manga or anime war arc?
My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Naruto / Boruto and Jujutsu Kaisen have some of the worst anime and manga endings. What makes them terrible? Naruto set the example, so why did everyone start copying it? How will Jujutsu Kaisen save its ending? When will My Hero Academia End? Will Black Clover end on a high note?

Attack on Titan is literally a military story. They can definitely have a war arc as an ending

Not only that, but war is used as a tool to showcase the theme of cycle of violence in the story. The problem with many war arcs is that they're either put there just for the sake of putting it there because big war is common way to demonstrate that the story is reaching it's conclusion or that they're too long. AoT doesn't have that problem because the final arc is 49 chapters long whereas in Naruto the final war arc is 186 chapters.

@@xandex69 Return to Shiganshina was good, but I thought Bertholdt and Reiner side of the fight wasn't the best. The tactics/decisions made on both sides were kinda forced to me; like Reiner trying to solo the Scout Regiment, the Colossal suddenly being a nuke, Armin's plan succeeding because Bertholdt decided "making it quick" was burning him to a crisp instead of just stopping the steam to splat him. I'm not saying it wouldn't been better if it addressed these things, my issue is how staged and dramatized and forced half the battle felt. Even the way Hange came at the precise moment she needed to - that kinda stuff happening all at once at such a pivotal battle is fine by me, but not peak.

​@@xandex69 The issue with the Marineford is that it got a lot of plotholes, since that stuff makes zero sense given modern context of the manga. The fact that no one used armament haki in that war is very telling how "planned" out the story of One piece is. Also Ace's death is very overrated considering that character was a mere cameo character we barely knew at the time before it spammed flashbacks in the post-war arc which is cheap, if it actually was a crew member that died then it would have been more impactful.

@@WieldMyWord I think you’re heavily underestimating the importance of Marineford. If Ace was a nobody who had no bonds or relationships to any other characters outside of Luffy and Garp, what unfolded at Marineford wouldn’t have ever happened. Even if a crewmate were captured and to be executed, what unfolded at Marineford still wouldn’t have even happened and its significance wouldn’t even mean remotely as much. There’s no guarantee that they’d even bother executing any of the Strawhats at Marineford except for Robin, which would’ve been redundant. Ace was set to be publicly executed for a different reason entirely. Ace’s death was a tragedy to not only Luffy but many others. It was also a great display the series’s world building between the Pirates, Marines, Warlords, Admirals, and Emperors. Not everyone who was a warlord or marine wanted Ace dead (Garp, Koby, Helmeppo, Jimbe, Hancock, etc) and not everyone who was a pirate came with the intention to save him (Crocodile, Mr.1, Buggy & Mr.3 initially, etc) but it all worked together really well regardless because they had their own reasons for being there because of all of the other big names that were there to actually save Ace. Luffy wouldn’t have been able to rally that many people together to save one of his crew outside of those on Impel down, but even that’s a stretch because if Ace wasn’t captured and sentenced to public execution, Jimbe wouldn’t have resigned his title as warlord and end up imprisoned in retaliation, Whitebeard wouldn’t have shown up to save Ace and therefore Crocodile would have little reason to even assist Luffy in the first place because he wouldn’t get the opportunity to kill Whitebeard. Even with Ace as his brother what guarantee would there have been that the entire Whitebeard pirate’s fleet would have cared to that extent? On top of that, none of the commanders except for Ace have any connection to ANY of the Strawhats so whatever sense of sentiment that was present would’ve been completely void. Haki is a plot hole in itself but it doesn’t deter from the themes, drama and symbolism that was portrayed during Impel down and Marineford.

Honestly, they just need to be organized, they can be messy like in battle like shit being pulled out every now and then. Although they shouldn’t be long as hell, they shouldn’t take like 10 years, in JJK they handle the Shibuya incident pretty well which is the beginning of a war arc And if it’s gonna be a war arc, KILL OF SOME OF THE CAST, ITS WAR. ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE GONNA DIE. Some characters get ass pulls and just live with little context even with context it’s a asspull

Imagine being a jojo fan, happy this kinda shit doesn’t happen in the manga because the story resets every 100-150 chapters, with the final battle maybe taking up less than 10-20% of the story, and then jojolion happened. While we may never know shonen pain, Jojolion’s final fight takes 2 years approximately between chapter 80 and 109 of the 110 chapter long manga. A mystery story. That releases chapters in months. Fuck.

Attack on Titan was War Arc after War Arc though. War Within the Walls to get Historia on the throne, War to Reclaim Shiganshina, War against Marley, Then the Rumbling. By that logic you may as well blame Endless Gundam Wars of being guilty of this trope. Bleach's Arrancar Arc was supposed to be a war as well although it ended up being a 1-sided slaughter until Aizen actually fought. I'm thinking of having a War Arc in my Shojo Series as the villains start a World War to feed the Big Bad with sweet suffering.The War Arc isn't supposed to be an epic struggle to eliminate the other side in this case it's merely something to be stopped & the villains are just in the way. End Game Saga in the series I'm making is probably closer to the traditional end of series war arc, although even then you aren't exactly my intended audience.

Gonna go ahead and comment about One Piece. To be fair, you did say "War Arcs" not "Final Wars". So it's free game. Marineford was great even though it was only a prelude to the real War. I think it's worth talking about just because it's a great example on how Wars can be properly executed in battle manga. It was well built up to from early on and Oda took his time setting up every character involved and managed to concluded all of the plot threads, themes, and character arcs in a satisfying way. The Final War in One Piece is also just getting started and so far it's off to an incredible start. Things are shaping up to be even better than Marineford. Oda said he wants to draw the best War Arc in manga so it may change the conversation on this topic somewhat.

Marineford did get some flack back it the day, especially for the Infamous Luffy running up the stairs. Whoever you can't really call it a war to be honest but more like a skirmish and the get out of there. Whoever One piece do have many wannabe "war" arcs which drags the show down because of the length and tedious stuff.

If they set up that there were other quirks that transfer early on it would be fine. In fact it would make the show 1,000x better if the entire time he had to learn to control new quirks and use them in new ways instead of just figuring out a slightly different way to punch or kick. It was clearly a retcon. I don't like MHA but I've been reading it since the start nearly 10 years ago and I used to a long time ago. I feel the Mha part of this video was really disingenuous; regardless of how well it was executed, saying there was no build-up for the stuff prior is just flat out wrong. As early as the sports festival, it was already established that Ofa had vestiges of power by helping save Midoyria from Shinzou's mind washing; and when Ofa is supposed to be a power passed down by so many quirk users, it's unrealistic to expect Deku to only have super strength. Deku not utilizing his legs for combat also makes perfect sense, considering his idol mainly fought by punching, and he was under the impression he could keep spamming 100 percent smashes if he was in a pinch (while still being able to move with his legs). I will admit, maybe the wars' been dragging on for a bit long as you said, but I'd rather have Horikoshi make the story he wants than be forced to rush due to deadlines. Yes, the cast is big, but I think to fully explore something so broad as herosim, you need a larger cast. I'm not saying you have to like it because I can definitely understand why you wouldn't; but that doesn't mean it's bad, and not nearly the worst war arc in shonen.

The thing is, Horikoshi hasn't been making the story he wants for a while; criticisms as early as the Overhaul arc seems to have led to this state we're in now, where he just wants the story over with instead of maintaining focus on, say, the female heroes like he did at the start.

@jackreacher7495 I'd argue the female characters have still gotten a good amount of love to them, even if they're a bit overshadowed by the male cast. Ochako vs. Toga is regarded as one of the best battle this arc, if not the series, and Ochako contributions to that fight definitely saved the Heros from being overwhelmed by the army of Twices. Nagant is very well written, Mt Lady's development is one of the best in the series, and Momo, Mirko, and Jirou have consistently put in work in both wars (Jirou was pivotal during the music festival, too) Yea, I do think some things have been rushed like Spinner vs Shoji, but the pay off for Shouto and his family, Bakugo, Toga Ochako, etc. have all been fantastic.

Or Ochako had a fight that had next to nothing to do with Deku and their relationship? That's what pains me - clearly, Horikoshi wanted to make these girls characters as relevant and fleshed-out as the main boys, but - of course, Japan being Japan - that was as unpopular as it always is; young male demographics don't like seeing complex women, or women being more competent/stronger in a fight than a men. At least, that's the impression I get from battle shounen

True, I agree overall. I think one of the issues plaguing a lot of these mangas is the fact that it's on a deadline. We can criticize it and say how it should have been a lot easier because it's from an outside perspective, but it's probably hell having to write, storyboard and draw all of it in one week for years. Compare that to novels which usually don't have a deadline in comparison and they're a lot more tightknit I'd say.

war arcs exist as the end of a build up that lasted the entire anime. I can make a pass for Demon slayer as they had 3 of the upper moons being killed, an entire training arc, and then the war arc, which lasts 70 chapters. The reason it is so long is because they have to allow all the fightscenes, as well as the flashbacks because ds sure loves doing those

I don’t really get the criticism for the MHA Final War Arc having so many characters participating. Not everyone’s favorite characters are Midoriya and Bakugou, and since the series is wrapping up it’ll probably be the last time most of these other characters show up, and I think giving them a little sendoff is nice. Although it would definitely have been better to establish them earlier. To me it felt like Horikoshi was slowly going through Class 1-A and giving them small character arcs (Kirishima, Iida, Jiro) before just tossing it and moving straight to the end.

A big war/battle to end an epic action/fantasy work is common. Shonen isn't the only one to do that. Look at Marvel with the avengers, the lord of the rings, game of thrones, the wheel of time, Harry Potter,... So the idea of the war arc isn't bad it's the execution that matters. Of course, for mha so far, with the weekly perspective it's a disaster, so maybe when it will be finished, with a few step back it will be more digest. Naruto war arc wasn't bad at all. Only the Kaguya part sucks. I mean thematically it was well written. Naruto Theme was the cycle of hatred. And we saw how the multiples war in Naruto fueled this cycle. So having all the ninja nation coming together as one in order to face a common threat in a big epic war so that at the end of the day , the cycle of hatred will be broken, it's a good idea. For jjk, I don't even know why you talked about it. The culling game wasn't the final arc of the manga and it wasn't a war. It was a big royal rumble free for all. So of course fights can be interrupted at any time by the arrival of a New characters. That's the whole concept of the culling game. As for characters development in jjk, I think it handled pretty well. Not all characters get treated well but most of them got it right. I hated the final arc of attack on titan not because of the war but because of the treatment of some characters that made no sense according to me.

The AOT ending was perfect and just added to eren's character, just because eren doesn't speak throughout the last arc doesn't mean it is bad, him choosing his own people over the entire world and him suffering alone was something that is a masterful storytelling and should be appreciated more,otherwise I do agree on most series have war arcs that are absolute shit.

I think Naruto's war arc was quite decent, and taking separate sections as separate arcs, some of them can be in the higher rankings of the Naruto arcs. Kishimoto had already built up to a lot of what was to come in the arc and Naruto & Madara's entry made the arc quite engaging, the anime obviously did butcher a lot with the pacing and fillers, I'm pretty sure they made up a portion of Gai's backstory, which was less than 10 pages with a beautiful transition of his POV seeing his father and the next page him unlocking it. It, like anything had it's flaws. The initial war was probably forgetable for people, especially watching the anime and the Kaguya retcon which was so blatantly a way to create a sequel, though I think Kishimoto was able to execute it in an okay manner with what all he had, considering this was a terrible idea. And in the end, the valley of the end, which was a great ending to the story and the franchise. Until obviously they made a sequel.

It felt so much shorter *quick googling* okay, all that I can find is in the anime it lasted for over 200 episodes, including the filler episodes, but the most I see from the manga is it lasted 80 chapters (which, if it's true, it's an alarming difference between chapters and episode & certainly didn't help much in their defense about milking Naruto too much)

The My Hero Academia takes are the only thing I incredibly disagree with, hating on the author bring back characters makes complete sense 😭 if he didn't there'd be so many questions as to where they are, and the characters themselves aren't bad or unnecessary in 99% of cases. Also the general hate on MHA in this video is kinda getting old im still waiting for someone to bring up something actually applicable to the series, other than the lack of character deaths. And saying the side characters are underdeveloped? Bakugo, Shoto, Hawks, All Might, Eraserhead, Uraraka, literally all of the villains, even fucking Gentle Criminal, and ESPECIALLY Endeavour and Deku are all incredibly well developed. It's impossible to ask the author to FULLY flesh out every single character in the show since the world he's created is so big. I don't mind the hate but not when it's just unnecessary wave riding 😭 Other than that great video essay, enjoyed the editing

a character being rectoned is not "showing real human emotion" we have seen eren show real emotion, we have seen eren show real human emotion, when he was willing to give up his life to find a solution to the conflict he was showing his real human emotions, when he cried in fron of ramzi he was showing human emotion, when he refused to lay down his life and that of all subjects of ymir like zeke wanted he showed real human emotion, the trashy ending was due to eren as a character not going all in nor all out, what isayama did was get cold feet midway, what eren acomplished by killing 80% of the world would have been achieved by not killing 80% of the world and thats the problem, the story creates an imaginary enemy in mindless eren for no reason at all cuz just for the sake of giving the alliance or more meta, the conflict resolution squad the good guys side of the narrative which wouldnt be bad if isayama didnt block that path in the story and made eren as the de facto leader of paradis have to take a extreme stance, so the supposed good guys are given time to shine after the the story passes the point of no return menaing the beginning of genocide so what is shoved down the readers throat is a solution to a problem that already happened, the worst part is that eren wouldnt need to kill any civilians for to achieve the same result as in the ending of the manga, he could have lifted the curse of becoming titan for all subjects of ymir and have lived the rest of his normal human life span with mikasa whi he supposedly loved to no end, you cant chalk it up to "oh but he gained godly powers and suffered a mental breakdown" you dont conduct a genocidal rampage for days on end and excuse yoursef with that argument, eren as a character is killed after his last message to the subjects of ymir because after that he puts in danger the friends that he supposedly would do anything for and also was trying to frame as heroes to the outside world, like wtf is that logic and lore wise path time is irrelevant to real time so eren could have simply passed his supposed mental breakdown in paths and just dedicated 10 iq point to think what would be the best course of action to give his friends long happy lives, zeke didnt went crazy in path like eren and there is no other difference to eren than the founding titan power which lets be real aint that mentally challenging as the only power that could drive him crazy was the attack on titan which he already had and it didnt get amped or anythng the whole argument of breaking down byt having godly powers is bullshit
