Just found your channel. As a long time fan of The Cars and a bassist I couldn't believe at the ten second mark a picture popped up of Ben's six string Gibson bass. So rare in more ways than one. One, Gibson stopped producing them in the early sixties 65 was the last year and two I read where these SG models maybe less than 500 produced during this time. This picture of his six string bass is an early picture cause after he acquired it he had it refinished in white. I have seen a picture of his white SG bass in an article a while back about Gibson's string basses. I have been searching for one of these Gibson basses for the past twenty years and they just don't ever surface for sale. Maybe one day my life will be complete. Oh by the way the pic of the music man bass in inca silver is another rare bass to find. These pop up from time to time but demand a pretty dollar that will give you a bloody nose. Thanks for your uploads of the cars. Curtis

That's not the Six String Bass - though Ben Had one (Panorama cover), that's Ric's 73' SG - if it were the bass the strings would extend longer. I can tell because during the 78' tour Ric's SG had a blindspot mirror on it, and it STILL has that white tag on the treble side pickguard from in the picture. RIc had it repainted black with red pinstripes sometime circa 1980. I still speculate that Benjamin used the six string bass on "Running to You" given the note choices. The Cars had quite a history of repainted guitars. The B.C. Rich circa 0:48 is still around, it's at the Hard Rock Cafe in an airport in India now. I think it was repainted black around the same time Ric's SG was. I think the first custom color guitars in The Cars purpose painted for their appearance was Elliot Easton's Les Paul (also at 0.48) and Ric Ocasek's 74' Fender Jazzmaster (the pink one), I think the LP came first though - there's actually a video of that Jazzmaster before it's paintjob from an older promo of "My Best Friend's Girl" - it was originally sunburst and had the stock bridge on it. I think the stock bridge may have survived till "Shake It Up" where Ric probably had the guitar refretted and the fretboard radius changed to match a newly installed Gibson Harmonica bridge put on it like his SG has (visible in the "Since You're Gone" video). Someone on OSG got a Jazzmaster recently that was shockingly close to Ric's (though not exact, the one they got was a 78', Rics was a 74'), pink paint, harmonica bridge, and it was from around the Boston area - maybe someone had Ric's guitar painter paint their Jazzmaster to Match Ric's. It's long gone now though since the new owner had it repainted olympic white. Only difference was the string guides, knobs, and switch tip.

The retooled version reminds me of one of Ric's inspirations , Alan Vega's band Suicide. A song called" Ghost Rider"
