When I was a kid we went to America on holiday. We stayed with my Aunt and Uncle and went on trips all over New York state and Pennsylvania. All the way down the side of the highways were huge billboards advertising Shoo Fly Pie. It looked really good and I decided I wanted some so my uncle took us to a country restaurant where I asked for a portion. It was served with a big dollop of cream and looked amazing. .. I took a big mouthful, chewed it for a moment and promptly spat it back out - it was without question the worst thing Ive ever tried to eat - my whole family roared with laughter at the expression on my face. Yeugghhh!

Dave, use the lid on your vanilla as a measuring spoon, usually around 1/2 teaspoon or a whole teaspoon depending on size of lid. I used a real measuring spoon to test its size on my Mexican vanilla and almost full is a teaspoon. Easy and convenient. Also as a maker of a zillion pie crusts, tucking under a little of the excess and crimping doesn’t just look pretty, it creates a dam so those unruly fillings keep their place. This is one pie I haven’t made and I can’t wait to take it to the next church event, it’s going to create a buzz for sure, no one has ever brought one!! Thanks ahead of time for one more feather in my baking goodness hat! Lol

Love this pie and it's history, was called shoo fly cause it was originally made as a sacrificial dish as it's high sugar would attract the bugs and keep them away from other foods in old homes... I wouldn't waste it though like that.

Grandma ruined me as a child I have tried everything from "gourmet" to cheap extract and nothing compares to the flavor and aroma of Watkins. "Shoofly Pie" gets its name from it's original ingredients, "Shoofly Molasses" and "Shoofly Flour". Those items get their name from the "Shoofly the Boxing Mule" brand, which was popular touring attraction in Dutch country " "Shoofly the Boxing Mule" gets his name from the song "Shoofly, Don't Bother Me"

Awesome video as always, Dave! This, the chicken and the sassafras candy have been some of my favorites out of this series so far. Speaking of the sassafras candy, though, I REALLY enjoyed that one because it added an element of foraging and gathering as I’m from your general region of the US. If you happen to see this, it would be SO cool if you could do a stand alone or video series on the local plants/roots/leaves/herbs and different methods of gathering, processing/cooking, preserving and utilizing. Of course I would ROOT -ba dum, tss!- for a full video series but I understand you’re a busy guy lol. But a video where you’re like “Boom, this is the root or leaf of tree XYZ, most used in a tea, great for headaches. Kay? Kay. Now boom this is a Dohickey berry, gathered in the early fall, poisonous to ingest before ripening but can settle nausea when ripe. Kay? Kay. Now boom, this is the…” and so on and so on. I live in KY and I believe you’re in the southern Ohio area so we have quite a bit of wildlife overlap

Dave I started out watching you play the hunter to Cody’s “gatherer”& here we are a decade later swapping pie crust hacks. Frankly dating back to the yurt I knew you could cook. Anyone that has never had a Shoo Fly Pie should 100% try it. I really do not think it should be for breakfast. It’s really good if the crust is done right, the filling is sweet n thick, and also the topping has to be full of the crumbles so you get that sweet and cinnamon bite!

I never knew that weighing stuff like flour really needs a scale. Depending how tight you pack the measuring cup it effects the amount drastically. If you're over measuring over 3 or 4 scoops it can throw off a recipe by 1/4 cup easily. I started making sour dough bread recently and figured this out the hard way.
