Not sure if this makes sense, but i can kinda see his behavior as "my world has started falling apart, I need to hold onto the one person I still have." Despite her having killed his wife. They even have a criminal minds episode where this couples son killed their other child, and they trued so hard to protect their son, because they had already lost one. It’s baffling to me that people can think she wasn’t aware of her actions and that she was having some attack because she was bipolar. She was cold and calculated the entire time and could think “rationally” but when you look at another famous case, Elisa lam, who did have bipolar disorder and was Medicated all the camera footage shows she’s very frantic she doesn’t know what she’s doing she pressed a bunch and buttons in the elevator and ended up actually ending her self by falling in to a water tank. The step dad's response is a trauma response. I've also had an experience of almost being well, killed, because of someone mentally unstable, I forgave them until they tried it again. Not saying it's okay all of a sudden, but it's probably a trauma reaction, for me it was because I blamed myself and justified it with "well they had mental health issues so I'm wrong for victim blaming them!"

Heath wants to believe that his stepdaughter that he’s loved and done so much for couldn’t have done this, and Karli puts on a sort of mask on around him, like she’s perfect or something. One thing is that they can’t legally diagnose someone who’s under 18 with bipolar or personality disorder due to hormones since there personality’s aren’t fully developed.
