Still putting out the best photography content by a mile, always highly entertaining and informative. Every presenter has a unique style and come across so clearly with a great dash of appropriate humor splashed in. I recently went back and binge watched every one of your video's here, thoroughly enjoyed it, although I must say that while I fully understand you have sponsors, personal preferences etc. one may think from time to time Canon is the only brand of DSLR on the market! ;) You know Nikon just released the Z9 right? Would love to see Marcus do a full review. :)

Hi Shane. Thanks for your comments, which are very accurate. The truth is that Nikon have no interest in providing us with gear. Canon, Fuji, Olympus, Sigma, and Leica are all very eager to have their products on our show, but Nikon and Sony have zero interest, so this is why we don't feature them. We tried for 6 months to get the Z7 II, but Nikon just messed us around and wasted our time. Please understand this is not because we don't want to feature them, but because they don't want us to feature them. We could of course go our and buy gear, but we don't have budgets for that. Hope that explains why you don't see much Nikon gear. Thanks for watching all the same.

@@PhotographyOnline Ahhh, makes sense, didn't think of that possibility! Thanks for such a detailed response, another great aspect of your channel. Hopefully they come around, you have such fantastic content here and they've given Z9's to plenty of other content creators, I'm sure it's only a matter of time they'll be begging you guys to feature their products. :) I'm no Nikon fanboy although I do shoot with them currently, I've used and loved Canon in the past as well. I strongly believe a camera's a camera and they all produce great kit these days if one knows how to use it. Thanks so much for clearing that up, now I can understand why we don't see those brands and shame on them. Keep up the amazing content, I really look forward to it.

An option to the Canon 800/11 for Sony shooters : Sony A7riv + the excellent 200-600. Shooting in APSC mode (26 mp) giving you 300-900 at a maximum of f9.5

About safety, you gave the impression that it was all about rocky shores, but I think you could have mentioned beaches and estuaries which can be just as hazardous. It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security when conditions are benign. The tide can come in very quickly and can creep round behind you unnoticed. Even if you think you know a beach it can change dramatically from one year to the next. As always I enjoyed your show. Very long time since I was last on Skye, but I still remember it well.

Hi Anthony. Thanks for your advice. We are limited with the amount of info we can include in an 8 minute feature, so obviously we can't go into any great detail about all situations. We rely on people using common sense (remember when that was commonplace?!). Thanks for watching. All the best.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between photos taken on the 800mm lens on a full frame camera (such as you did) and photos taken on an APS-C sensor with, say, the Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 (whopping 240-960mm equivalent). I'm sure the full frame camera's better ISO performance would outweigh the Aperture advantage the Sigma lens has, but would be interesting to know. A lot of us more budget-constrained shooters do, after all, have crop sensor cameras and they can produce better results than they are often given credit for.
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. It would actually make no difference. If I cropped my FF sensor but 33%, I would essentially be left with a 38mp cropped sensor. It’s a mistake to think that cropped sensors offer any optical advantage over larger sensors, because it’s not the case. So if a 600mm lens on a cropped sensor did have an advantage over the 800mm on FF, I could simply use the 600mm lens on the FF camera and crop to the same dimensions. Does that make sense? Marcus.

Couple of questions for you guys if you dont mind me asking, Where do you get your music from for each episode and is it copyrighted as im looking for music to put to drone footage i have taken, 2nd question would you fancy doing a feature on star photography/deep space etc with star trackers for newbies?
@PhotographyOnline

Hi. Music usually comes from a website called Epidemic Sound. It's al royalty free but you pay a monthly subscription to use it. With regards to your second question - this is on our very long list of things to feature, but it is challenging to shoot, as it is not easy to video in the dark. We'll try our best though.

Another great video! One thing I would have added to the seascapes technique clip concerns stabilizing the tripod on sand - important but not easy when shooting longer exposures - especially when waves are flowing over the bottom of the legs. Some people attach old CDs on the bottom of the legs of their tripod! Any better tips?
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin. We had this in the original script but needed to edit it out for timing purposes. The best way (in our experience) is to use spikes and let at least 3 waves wash over the feet before you take your photo. After this, the tripod shouldn't move. We've never used CDs but by doing so you would introduce a large surface area which will be prone to being moved by a wave washing over it. Spikes offer the least resistance so are better in this aspect. Hope this helps.

Nick I am surprised that while talking about tides I for example have tide books for all the areas that I shoot at plus the cost of these small pocket sized books I have four as living in the West Country I have the north and south coasts to think about at a cost of 75p each fishing tackle shops would love your custom a lot of them are struggling so help yourself and them. If you are doing long exposure on a beach a really simple way to stop you getting cut off is to check the tide mark that is left at the height of the previous high tide and on tide hights there are neap tides and there are spring tides the springs are dangerous the water moves faster and the tides are a lot higher all the info is the tide books they can save lives.

I watched the Seascape portion with great interest. It is inevitable that the best photos to be had is when it is blowing a hoolie. So, how to you keep the camera still? Hand holding doesn't work. Put the camera on a tripod works even less. There is rarely a convenient wind break. So, how to stop the camera flapping about? There was no mention of how to do this. Otherwise a great show.
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. At no point did we say that you had to photograph in high winds. We did say that the best time to shoot dramatic scenes is either during or after a storm. Obviously if it is during a storm then it is likely to be windy but just after a storm is when seas are still wild but the wind has abated. We showed many examples of dramatic seascapes during the feature, so clearly this is easily achievable. We have already done a feature about how to use a tripod properly, including how to use it in high winds, so we don’t like repeating ourselves. Try watching that show if you need some advice. With good tripod technique (and a good tripod) then it will be possible to get pin sharp shots in 60mph winds. If your camera is “flapping about” then you’re doing something very wrong. Remove all camera straps, avoid hanging your bag from your tripod, use spikes and shield your camera with your body if possible. Hope this helps.

The difference is David that Canon are active in supporting us, whereas some other brands are not. We do feature other brands when we have the chance (Leica, Olympus, Fuji, Sigma, etc) but Sony and Nikon aren’t interested in having their gear appear on our show. If this is not to your liking, maybe complain to them, as we have tried quite hard to remedy the problem.

I'm not a Canon shooter, but I have a query after watching the article about the 800mm lens. Around the 23:17 mark, when changing the ISO value the number in the bottom right of the screen also changes. I assume that's the number of shots remaining. If so, why does it change ?
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Julian. Thanks for your eager eye and resulting question. None of us were aware that the capacity of the card changed when adjusting the ISO, so we got onto the technical experts at Canon. Guess what - they weren't aware either! However, they are findng out for us, but this needs to go via Japan, so it may take a while. It does make sense that changing the ISO will create different files sizes, but why larger ISO files end up being bigger (we would expect them to be smaller), is a mystery to us at this time.
