Great tutorial Omar. When you double the distance, you need 2 extra stops. The inverse square law is 1 over the distance squared, so doubling the distance means you only get 1/4 of the light. Two full stops - one stop to get you to 1/2 and another stop to get you back to 1. Nevertheless, this is a great tutorial (also very entertaining). Cheers

I kinda do this differently, because I rely on auto exposure very often. I usually set the flash ttl metering between one and two stops lower than my ambient exposure, so it is both on Auto with the set difference. I then use the excomp-dial for ambient exposure and the flash dial for needed difference between ambient and flash exposure. Less control but more flexibility when switching rooms or when suddenly the lights change. Canon does a great job with auto everything, other brands less so. Thanks for your tutorial!

As a event photographer i totally agree. Like Omar said, look how's the light around to get the moody environmet and then set the flash to manual. All these new modern TTL flashes haven't given me any improvement which works for me in nightlife / dark environments. I use an old Nikon flash (SB-800) which does the job a nd has not so many settings to mess around. As seen in the video the flash bounced back from the ceiling and fives a soft light. that's good in locations with not so high ceilings, but this doesn't work in big dark clubs. you can use a little refector, or plastic softbox / cap on the flash to get a more soft light.
