I did that for so long in the military it just became second nature and a friend of mine rented duals for his first class we went to. I just have a mono and still do. That dude was walking like he was drunk, he couldn’t do a reload to save his life. But without nods? His reloads are faster than mine. I had to stop him and I said “what’s this telling you right now?” That reloading is a visual thing to him, and not muscle memory. That stuck with him forever. He relearned how he would do reloads. Next Nv course we go to? Mans ROCKIN the reloads now! I had a tough time trying to teach him how to do it because when you do something for so long that no one taught you how to do, you just kinda had to figure it out on your own…it’s hard to teach it. I had to reload a saw under NODs and that was TOUGH! But…I figured it out as time went on, but I’ll have a difficult time passing down how I did it to others. My brain sorta just…figured it out

Both are necessary (lots of variables in MT-ETT), but since a larger field of view really helps during the hours of darkness, (re: the milspec rear apertures on irons is larger for night shooting). Keeping off the stock-weld automatically opens the field of view for the shooter. Once the stock weld is achieved, the field of view welds with it. Most everyone knows that the "moving" targets can move into the target area from outside of the field of view; having that improved field of view might help. For this reason, active aiming is my first choice (when the situation allows it); keeping the largest-possible field of view. The rifle still must go wherever the eye goes. A good number of monocular users wear the monocular over the non-firing eye, but most milspec 14s can be flopped over. Great video; an abundance of valid points, excellent training examples, and it brings back lots of memories. Thanks!

Shooting really comes down to 2 things: vision and index. that includes shooting passive vs active under nods. Vision requires more training since youre looking through toilet paper tubes, and subsequently your index on the rifle needs to be solid so you can drive it wherever your eyes need it to go. the beauty of it is, you can dry fire both methods pretty regularly and really hone in your index and vision with both aiming styles. great videos as always gents.

I used to run BUIS on my rifles, but I think it's gone the way of the dodo bird. If you're running a red-dot and a laser aiming system there's really no reason (or room on the rail) to run irons. You have a primary and a back-up system with dots and lasers, why do something else? Even if they both go down, your brain will still find the middle of a red-dot "frame" and you'll be pretty close to target. That's a bad day, but doable. I'll also say, learn to use irons. It's great fundamentals and will make you a more composed shooter.
@woodsghost90888 күн бұрын
You can use irons with NODs. With XS Big Dots on an AK, tritium front and back, you are basically lining up 2 golf balls under NODs. And getting the results you might imagine from lining up golf balls where your sights used to be. If one doesn't have a choice, there is an option. If one DOES have a choice, that other choice is probably better.
@HBCuatro6 күн бұрын
The other choice which is probably better is a red dot. I think what he was getting at with the irons comment is if there is very little ambient light under NV you can’t really see what you’re doing when your irons are floating around in the dark.
@woodsghost90886 күн бұрын
@HBCuatro I suppose. My experience with irons is you need to focus your NOD to a far distance. And doing so means the iron sights and everything close is blurry. Tritium will show up as a golf ball or baseball sized blurry circle in your NODs. Depending on factors I'm not educated enough to go into. I have never used steel irons to hit anything because I can't see them and the target at the same time. Illuminated irons, with a specific setup, can be used if your definition of "success" is very broad and the ranges are relatively short.
@HBCuatro2 күн бұрын
@@woodsghost9088 this is exactly why the red dot is superior. Your ocular focus is to the target area not your sighting system. Lining up a post and dot still covers up half of target and a dot just floats in space.
