This was by far THE best tutorial on VOR approaches I've seen - short and packed with depth. Can you do ones for: ILS's and RNAV's?

Man I loved this channel before this video but now you are showing me examples on airports I actually fly to. Couldn’t ask for any better

Love it. KPAH is in my backyard but I haven't flown there yet. This was awesome Dan. P.S I just finished your commercial ground course. Taking the written in 2 weeks.

Despite the VOR becoming outdated with modern GPS, I still love VOR approaches. It takes a wide variety of skill, situational awareness, and knowledge.

Nicely Explained. Thank You. Mike

VOR-B into KPRB (the approach that often appears on the IRA written) was part of my checkride. It includes a DME arc but otherwise a normal approach, nothing fancy. My CFI and I drilled that approach about a hundred times lol

I love VORs! Sadly they’re slowly being decommissioned in the EU. Navigating with VORs, especially when using 2 VORs and their DME’s to do trilateration (essentially manual RNAV) was simultaneously the most challenging but also the most fun and rewarding part of my flight training.

two points to note: you can make a left or right turn from the protected side of the procedure turn when turning back inbound on the VOR course inbound to the FAF. next: should you start descending at the FAF after the flag flips? or should you wait to descend until after gaining positive course guidance (ie flag flips to FROM and “needle off the wall”)? i’m not sure there is consensus on this.

In this video you can descend when crossing the FAF (the VOR). A course reversal was done and you are established on the inbound course/heading for the runway. The way we do it on a VOR approach in my local area, and instructors, experienced pilots and DPEs agree with this, is that if you do a course reversal and tracking a course inbound, you can descend at the FAF even if the CDI isn't centered when crossing a VOR. The reasoning behind that is you know you're over the VOR and you know you are on the course inbound. If the course reversal isn't done, because you are approaching and intercepting the approach course from the "NoPT" side of the approach, you must wait to descend until after crossing the FAF (VOR in our case) AND gaining positive course guidance. The reasoning behind this is because you are not established on course, you don't know exactly where you are during that turn after crossing the VOR and intercepting the inbound course. The approach is the VOR-A into KCEW if you want to take a look at it. Always double check with your local instructors or DPEs though when going up for a checkride... lol.

How would you perform this approach if you are inbound on the 222 radial. Similar situation to your Catalina quiz you emailed recently. There is a similar approach to KMLF if you were to start from the Enoch VOR (EHK)
