@theschurrll6 жыл бұрын
Forget the cone shape! Maybe you should drill a hole into the floor of one anvil. I would try to go down to the middle. I would try a diameter of 15 to 20 mm. After a depth of about the quarter you should hollow the inside in a bottle shape. The fill it up with the gunpowder that worked best 😁👍🏻 Hope you try this, because i‘m curious if that works

Glad to see that you were/are taking the safety seriously! A neighbor of mine killed himself doing this. He did several things wrong--old cast iron anvils, too much powder, no safety equipment, and he was not nearly far enough away--and the anvils shattered, sending shrapnel flying in all directions. A small chunk of one of them pierced his chest and that was it for him. He'd launched the anvils about 8 or 9 times prior to the last blast. Very cool to watch, though!

@D3faulted16 жыл бұрын
Try drilling a really deep hole in the blue anvil and make a piston, you need to contain the pressure long enough for the red anvil to have time to accelerate. The way it is now your just dumping all the pressure as soon as there is enough to move the red anvil.

All the people that do this competitively use something sticky between the anvils to keep them together just a bit longer, this increases the internal pressures and launches it much higher.

Famous USA author Mark Twain wrote about anvil-firings... I had to wait much later to learn what that was. Thanks for demonstrating it! I assume that for a given configuration there is an optimal speed for the explosion... it's like an impedance, too fast or slow and the energy doesn't transfer optimally. Also, I'd assume that the closer the pocket is to spherical, the more efficient the transfer.

Back in the 1880's, there was an abandoned frontier fort in Texas, named Fort Belknap, that had been used my the US Military prior to the Civil War. It was taken over briefly by confederate forces during the war, but was not used as more than a staging point to control Indian raids. Most of the fort was dismantled by the locals to use as homesteads. The only thing that remained was the reinforced stone munitions store room. It had been breached by the locals and the remaining gun powder was used by farmers to remove stumps from their fields. The gun powder was also occasionally used by the more adventurous youths to either ignite by hitting it with a sledge hammer or setting a charge to shoot anvils. They finally did away with it after one of the boys was killed be an anvil. The grounds of the fort are still maintained as an historical site today. There are many more interesting things that occurred there, but that's another story.
@jdbull666 жыл бұрын
Just as a suggestion, maybe try using electrical tape and bind the anvils together. This way more pressure will build between them instead of leaking out the sides right away, until ultimately, the tape will break allowing them to fly apart.
@tylerburrow796 жыл бұрын
I believe slower burning powder combined with a much better seal will give you better results. Slower powder pushes heavy projectiles better which is why it is used in higher caliber cartridges.

In rural areas especially poorer ones, it was a common way to signal for help. It is called " ringing the anvil and usually is accomplished using a pound of black powder for an anvil . Apparently a single pound of gunpowder was cheaper than buying a town bell.
@dalemckee28976 жыл бұрын
I've seen some anvil launches in person in the past and instead of using a paper gasket like you are using they were using peanut butter as the sealant. You might want to give it a try cause where the paper doesn't seal the anvils together as tightly as you might want them to be. Just a thought is all.
@jamesparker38226 жыл бұрын
A bit of reshaping to make the roof of the holes in the anvils like combustion chambers to direct the blast downwards should help as well as the peanut butter seal trick mentioned.
@randyeller81396 жыл бұрын
Shooting 50kg of anvil up in the air is impressive no matter how you look at it! The shock and smoke would probably rule out putting a go pro cam on the flying anvil but might have been cool. Talk with some of your local Hot rodding clubs and they might have a trick or two to maximize the compression of the blast. It is pretty much like the explosion in a car cylinder really. Maybe shaping the hole for the gun powder like a rocket nozzle (this bell sort of shape) could help directing the blast more accurately at the anvil.
@pirobot668beta6 жыл бұрын
Finer powder = more surface area = faster burn, up to a point. Large gains = less area = slower burn...until the grains get smaller and burn faster! The 'ideal' situation sees the anvils starting to move apart just as the pressure is reaching maximum. Black powder muskets have to be 'tuned' to the powder they are burning for this very reason. An 'ideal' burn with muskets is to have bore pressure still climbing just as the bullet is leaving the muzzle. Accelerate that bullet all the way down the tube. If the pressure spikes too soon, the bullet will be slowing down in the barrel after the pressure spike has dissipated. If the pressure spikes to late, the bullet doesn't pick up much speed and most of the powder is wasted out the muzzle. Loose black powder, in a confined space, tends to explode rather than burn; every muzzle-loading gun requires firm compression of the powder charge to prevent barrel explosions. I am guessing that a medium-coarse 'cannon powder' would be groovy, but you would need to find a safe way to compress the powder charge into the anvil recess. Not super compressed, but enough to close the bigger gaps between the powder grains. The flame front moving through the charge should burn through the grains, and not around them! BTW, smokeless powders would be of no help here, they require massive [20+ bars] pressures to burn fast enough. Hmmm, fast black-powder to build pressure/heat fast, slower smokeless powder to maintain/build the pressure spike...hybrid charges may not be according to Hoyle...space program...
@PixelmechanicYYZ6 жыл бұрын
That's probably why in mining, they use a fast explosive to fracture a rockface but a slower moving one to push it out of the way. The slow stuff apparently has more "shove" .. I think Adam and Jamie learned this in one of their big explosion episodes.
@pattheplanter6 жыл бұрын
Shaped charge but reverse of the usual? You want a flat wavefront hitting the bottom of the anvil - so shallow in the middle and deep around the edges?
