Actually Colin, they were as inaccurate 'back then' as they are now. The builders were just as embarrased when they missed things and, because it so often upset the king so much that he'd have the operator's head chopped orf, they decided it would be safer (for them) if they aimed at larger targets. Such as castles... That's the real reason why they became known as a siege weapon, purely because it allowed those charged with aiming them living longer because they didn't miss their target. Not a lotta people know that!

The sling has too long line, I'm pretty sure that the projectile speed would be way higher with a shorter line.
@TheFamine1233 жыл бұрын
Was thinking the same thing, a big part of using a sling is the whipping action as it releases, doesn't seem like he's quite getting it
@Pecuniarly3 жыл бұрын
You are correct that the sling does not rotate fast enough around the arm: on 1:23 you see that the release pin is angled down a bit while normally it should angle up a bit there, so it releases much earlier, which means the sling does not rotate fast enough around the arm. However, the line should be about as long as the long throwing arm (from turning axel to release end) in a good trebuchet, so I expect that they should go for a lighter projectile / heavier counterweight.
@RayvenQ3 жыл бұрын
@@Pecuniarly The sling release pin is at the right angle, and right direction, when it was straight it was releasing too late. Its releasing at about the perfect time.But yeah the sling itself is slightly too long as the payload should have been directly underneath the axle, but it was a bit too far forward of it. Also with trebuchets, 8ts not a quick whipping action like a sling, but a slower one imparting the impetus of the counterweight to the projectile

@@taylorjohnston3434 The ballast kicks back on the downswing. If it had a hard stop that kept it from swinging back at the end it would transfer more force. That being said, I didn't notice if the projectile stays on the arm long enough for that to matter, and if not then that's another area where youre losing potential.

I mean he must have a cannon ball somewhere, must of used one atleast once for something.
@gerritroseboom86214 жыл бұрын
Aerodynamics do not really matter much when the projectile is of this size. Just by looking, you wouldnt see the difference between an engine block or a sphere of the same weight. With meassurements it is of course, but it is a negligible difference. AND moreover, we are waching Colin Furse here, and what is more epic, a canonball or a flying car???
@Ghirahim34 жыл бұрын
I mean, why not both. Also a cannon ball is going to go through stuff a lot better than a car will (the car'll just fall apart all things considered). Plus this is supposed to be medieval and cars were a hard ammunition type to find for your siege weapons. I mean motorcycles were everywhere, but cars hadn't quite taken off (Very bad pun intented).
