Great video! I’m also using s5 and I have a problem when I manually focus in long exposure. It’s hard to get the focus peak show up when the shutter speed is 10 second or above. Do you have any tip to solve that?

You deserve more subs, found your presentation very informative and well paced with great useful detail. I’m a LUMIX fanboy for good reason but I use the ff S1R, I guess the S1 will return similar Astro images technically as the S5, what do you recon? I’m going to have buy a used body specifically for Astro so a bit torn between the s5 and S1. My widest lens is the pano 16-35 f4 so guess a faster lens is on the cards too. Enjoyed your video, thanks for making it and putting it out there. 👏📸

Thanks mate! For photography the S5 and S1 will be pretty much identical. If you were going to do any video the S5 comes loaded with Vlog already and you have to pay more on the S1 to unlock it if that's a factor for you. Otherwise it would just be what feels better in hand for you. F4 may be a bit slow but it'd be worth at least giving it a crack before getting something faster. You can push the iso surprisingly far in these cameras for astro which may counteract the lost stops your aputure.

@@RoryandCasey Thanks Rory, recon you’re right, one step a time, gear just runs away with your money otherwise. The S5 seems to make sense with it video capability I guess. All the best and a happy new year.

Nice shots, I have the S5 too. Do you take on spot dark images (lens cap on) with the same settings for post NR?

Honestly I don't find that the S5 needs much if any noise reduction.

Thanks for sharing. I had s5m2 and TTArtisan 11mm F2.8. I am planing travel to Tassie on Easter and stay around 10 days. Is it good time for astrophotography and aurora?
@RoryandCasey
@RoryandCasey 3 ай бұрын
For the Aurora you just never know. It’s all to do with flares from the sun which aren’t very predictable. We normally only know a few days before whether it’s likely to happen or not unfortunately. Keep your eye on the Aurora alert pages to see whether they are likely.

can you please post reduction needed to get if using Saamyang 14mm with this Panasonic S5? thank you
@RoryandCasey
@RoryandCasey 2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean noise reduction? I generally don't need to add much if any at all if I keep the iso low enough like below 6400 is very clean.

I've had my S5 out a few times now at night but I haven't been able to get the Starlight feature to work. Have you had it work?
@RoryandCasey
@RoryandCasey Жыл бұрын
I normally shoot stars using the standard long exposure techniques. I haven't tried any features for shooting stars.
@johnpeters4801
@johnpeters4801 Жыл бұрын
@@RoryandCasey This feature is supposed to automatically focus to the stars. According to the manual, If the camera detects stars after determining low illumination AF, then Starlight AF will be activated. Then a special icon is supposed to show up in the view finder. I've never gotten the icon to appear.... so I just try do the manual focus thing
@RoryandCasey

Ahhhh gotcha. My Astro lens is fully manual which is why I've probably never seen it show up.

@@RoryandCasey I'm thinking my Sigma lens that I got with the camera will suddenly become a manual when the stars come out. :) PS thanks for the great video!
