i would definitely recommend asking for a Hand check, Carmencita has a nice article on their website how the Xray machines affect film

I wish film were easier/cheaper to process and scan. Doing it at home is fine if you have lots of time and space, but labs here in Australia are charging a fortune (especially for scanning) and seriously taking the joy out of film photography for me. Such a shame since it seems to be more popular in 2023 even than 2022 and 2021! With extra film sales and more people doing it, you'd imagine prices might come down instead of going up. Oh well

It's not that expensive if you learn to do it yourself and you can scan with a relatively inexpensive marcro lens, film carrier and tripod. But I agree that sending it out for processing and scanning is very expensive.
