Im a Korean American in an area with very few other Koreans. I want to try shooting traditional archery so bad but i have to wait a few years before i have the funds and the time to go back to Korea! Hopefully it's as amazing an experience as it looks.

I am in the exact same situation, my mom is in Korea right now and looking into it a little but I am super jealous and wish I could be there in person! Official rule of traditional Korean archery scoring is unified, and they count only hit or miss on the target. I need to study more regarding the origination of the target design. Thanks for the interests!!

only difference between a war bow and a practice bow is that a war bow is coated with lacquer and then tightly wrapped with silk string from one end to the other, then lacquered again. It's for protection from moisture from rain and snow.

When drawn, there is a five degree cant to the bow that moves the upper half of the string off of the side of the head. Or at least there sould be. I went and watched the woman loosing an arrow at 1:14. Just before the release, she holds and the arrow is under her chin. At this point, to me, the string is close, but not touching her cheek. The next scene of her loosing an arrow is from behind her and you can see the cant to the bow, but not the relationship of the string to her cheek.

My uncle just bought a traditional Korean bow and we just went bow hunting for moose 5 weeks ago and we just took down a big bull moose in Alberta Canada now his deep freezer is full of moose meat.

@@rooroo9216 it was 50lb bow, and we were like between 20-15 yards and the arrows we were using, were gifted from an elder in my community they were traditional native Canadian arrows that he made in 2000 and the arrows heads were flint, he was too old to go bow hunting he said so he gave, me and my uncle each 6 arrows and that’s when we decided to use the traditional Korean bow with the arrows; and that’s when we go the moose.

Those sound like some very valuable arrows, I certainly would be very afraid to shoot, I certainly wouldn’t want to break them! If I break a cheap poorer quality arrow I don’t really mind much though. Jesus the year 2000… I was only in Primary 2 back then!

I'm not a Korean bow shooter but I do shoot traditional bows. I can shoot up to 120 lb. but it took a long time to get there. I started with 35 lb., went to 55 lb., then 90 lb., and finally 120 lb. It took me over 4 months to be able to pull the 90 lb. bow and about 2 years of conditioning to pull the 120 lb. bow. Even today I do most of my day to day practice with a 45 lb. bow. I would recommend starting any archery with a bow under 50 lb. draw weight to perfect your technique before moving on to high draw weights.

@@carlscholer439 It sounds fantastic story-telling. In my opinion, while growing older, we'd better be careful against shoulder muscle(rotator cuff tear) injury due to shooting too heavy poundage bow. Thanks anyway!!

Do you plan to shoot with thumb draw? If so, there's a big learning curve, so I would not go with the same weight you would shooting western style. It takes time to condition your thumb and get used to shooting on the right side of the bow.
