Hi, I'm a South Korean and I really enjoyed this video. In the past, many Koreans including women and children enjoyed shooting bows and it was our tradition. I heard that we had the advanced technique to make the traditional bows but we lost many things during the Japanese occupation(1910-1945) and Korean war(1950-1953). I always wanted to learn shooting traditional Korean bows but I couldn't have the opportunity to learn it. Thanks for your video. It was very interesting for me. Hope you try more traditional Korean bows! Have a great day :) [P.S. Many people say that Korea was the country of Bow. China was the country of Spear. Japan was the country of Sword.]

It is said that the string material of the bow during the Joseon Dynasty was made by synthesizing cattle tendon, cattle horn powder, and cotton thread with an adhesive. Then you can control the tension of the string.

Not horns of a regular cattle, but of a Buffalo, which has never existed in the Korean territory at once; so they must be imported from countries far south. They were proper "strategic material" that the government tried its best to procure and secure. It just shows how seeious they were.

2:18 translation : - A precious artifact which has the most perfect condition of Joseon Military Bow( Warbow) - It had arrived around 1910 to this museum, and surprisingly it had its bowstring on its place since then, and until now. - This artifact may let us know that the thing around the entire bow is the core(not sure about this since I’m not a bow expert), not the string. - Although the upper piece lost its strength so that the balance is leant to the lower piece, this shows us the representative character of our ancient military bow(Warbow) which is winding up the Hanji(one of the Korean traditional paper) around the middle of the bow handle, instead of just thickening it. By the way, there was a documentary in here about korean bows and they suggested about the Korean Horn Bow made with sculpted Water Buffalo Horn was the best. Ever heard of it or interested?

Awesome bow. Some people in the warbow community say the weight needs to be a certain amount like 100lbs but I disagree, it depends on the culture that used the bow for war. In this case the Koreans using 60lbs is historical accurate

@@HistoricalWeapons War bow is a compromise from what I understand . An attempt to seperate English long bow which is more accurate to refer to the Regency era rebirth of archery in English society as a past time . Loades refered to horse bows used in warfare as being lower weights and for good reason . Try and draw 150 pounds from a horse . I tried to do a video with a barrel n a saddle . ( I don't have access to horse and a barrel removes a living breathing animal with a mind of its own ) To replicate his suggestion of shorter draw from horseback. Didn't get very good footage . @@HistoricalWeapons That's great ,good hopes for that . I am suspecting it will be a challenging adventure. Bow type depending I will predict 90 as a safe upper limit . Since an increased risk of shoulder injury since engaging the back may be more challenging on a moving animal. Saddle type would be and aid . Though I doubt any modern saddles give enough support??? I bet your suggestion in first comment of 50/60 pounds will be accurate . Especially if it requires a bit of speed at multiple targets . The other factor would be target distance. Don't need as high of a weight at shorter distances from horse back to be effective or potentially effective since I don't think I have seen any form of methodology of effectiveness presented by anyone . Horses complicate that especially staying safe . I look forward to seeing your videos on this subject .

Hi, I'm a Korean archer, it is good to see this kind of cross-cultural exchange among traditional archers. The thumb ring you are using (which is the 'female' type) should be used with your index fingers over your thumb, not with your index fingers over the protruding part of the ring. It should be used just as if you were pulling with your thumb, and the ring merely adds a bit of protective layer on your raw thumb skin. You would need to buy or make a 'male' type ring if you want to use the grip that you use in the video.
@milktealove
@milktealove 3 жыл бұрын
Just to add: the terms 'male' and 'female' rings have to do with the shape of the rings and nothing to do with the gender of the archer. The female type is widely used across many tribes in the Asian steppes who use the same type of horn bow. It is especially suitable for mounted archery. The male type is (as far as I know) unique to Korea and was used mainly among foot archers. They say it is better for pulling very heavy bows, but I personally find them uncomfortable. Beware, if you are not used to the 'male ' grip and keep pulling heavy bows you could end up with a (temporarily) blackened thumb.

Nice Video. To show my appreciation, I translated the Korean words in information paper at 2:18 . This is the valuable artifact the most preserved Bow of Joseon Military Forces. . It seems that the museum had obtained in 1910s, and surprisingly the string have been loaded until now since exibited. . By this heritage, what revealed is the stuff coiled whole bow body is not 'string' but 'Sim'. (Sim is the tendon of cow.) . The upper side arm of this bow is more curved than lower side arm but the handle is not thick and is wrapped in what is assumed to be HanJi. (HanJi is the Korean traditional paper.) These characteristics show this is the typical Korean Military Bow.

1. The bow filmed is a modernized version with modern composite. In the old days there was no such material. They used multi layers. Then the bond matters. Adhesives do not work since there is difference of length between layers. Koreans found that a material made from croaker air bladder works like adhesive but still support the multi layer by letting the layers slide. Actually it is not adhesive. It forms numerous mini teeth on the surface. When you pull the teeth slide and fit into neiboring slots. This can be observed only my microscope. So either the ancient Koreans have impossible eyesight or were perseverant and lucky enough to hit upon the right material. 2. The shoulder draw is about 20 cm longer than the Western lip draw. So it needs less muscle. The release force acts longer and the acceleration stronger . The longer draw is not good for quick shooting. Still does not matter since Koreans used it from long distance. They practice with targets 145 meter far. With tubes shooting shorter and heavier arrows your target can be put a couple of hundreds of meters. I guess they used this weapon as snipers. In Korea a lot of mountains valleys creeks. 70% of the land. This is a terrain for snipers and hunters. For Chinese hard to conquer and little to exploit. For mounted nomadic army not much to feed their horses and cattles. Only people who has the full set of knowhow for making food out of littoral sea, river, field, mountain could help starving. This is the secret how this ancient people could maintain their identity neiboring the formidable Chinese and nomads. For example they fought more than 30 years against Mongols. It took only two weeks for Mongols to conquer Samarkand.

Swietnie video! Cześć~ jestem koreanski. I used to do korean archery a while ago. It is quite astonishing a polish is reviewing a korean bow. You seemed quite experienced with various bows, some details were out of my expectation. I hereby write some additional information that might help. Hope it would be helpful somewhat with my lack of knowledge and veterancy. To begin with, you should know a major purpose of korean bows was horseback shooting. For that, they had to be short(easy to carry while horseride) and flexible(to gain more energy with that short body). This is the reason body is made of two different materials(normally wood and bull's horn) since inner and outer body parts take different pressures(easy to understand if you think of aircraft wings). As to shooting stance, you can't shoot an arrow stably with two-finger pulling on a horseback. That is why you pull sling with thumb in a fist. The wooden piece in a box you present early in this video is used for pulling thumb, and it is called 깍지(ggak-ji). There are two types of it, each called 숫-깍지/암-깍지(Sut/Am). Tho there is no official/formal format of stance(due to data loss and regional difference), most ranges and masters recommend you to pull the sling just before end of arrow head, which means you should bend the bow til it goes like ㄷ and arrow-tail must be placed over your chin unlike western stance(if you have choosen proper arrow with length and head weight for your bow). Unlike modern(western) archery stance in which your body toward 90' from target, your body core should head about 45' of the target. Ah and! Normal shooting distance for korean archery is 145m! Dzienki!

Amazing Bow! Korea is also known as the Country of the Bow with regards to its military prowess and was famous for waging and winning wars against numerically superior enemies with its mastery of the bow and military technology. All the founders and famous military leaders of various Korean empires and dynasties were amazing marksmen. Jumong of Goguryeo or Holy King of the East Jumong was said to be a legendary marksman and had a bow that only he could use. Hyeokgeose of Silla, Taejo of Goryeo, Yi Seong-gye of Joseon, Emperor Gojong of the Empire of Korea, Admiral Yi Sun-shin, Kim Yu-shin, Yeon Gaesomun, Kwon Yul, and Eulji Mundeok are historically known as skilled archers.

I own a Nawalny bow. It’s very good. It cost a lot. I’m nit picking here but I think the horn effect on Grozer bows is nicer looking. Also one of the leather string pads has crushed down quickly leaving the bow buzzy. My bow was decorated and looks great, however the finish has little details out of place, like spots of paint here and there. I really like the bow and shoot with it all the time, I just think it’s worth mentioning these details, especially with price tags like this.

Bow looks great! I wish it would be available in more than 80#@31" though... When I read "warbow" I hoped Nawalny might go up to something like 150# possible max draw weight with this or so. I like heavy bows, so I think regarding Korean bows I'll have to stay with my 100#@31" Daylite Monarq until some other company/bowyer makes at least a bow with a similar draw weight to that. Visually I much prefer this Korean Warbow from Nawalny to the Daylite Monarq, I like bows that looks more "natural" over bows that looks obviously like synthetic materials.

@LifeisGood-ye8rl 3 жыл бұрын
Am sure he can make it if you ask for extra of course. Also if you’re used to with 100# this 80 pound would make a joy and pleasure to shoot. Like an all day weekend shooting sessions and still historical accurate weight since Korean bows are faster and they probably make war bow in that range to fight lightly armor Chinese infantry or Waiku pirates who were likely wearing woven scale armor which was nowhere near protection level of European plate armor
@Tystros
@Tystros 3 жыл бұрын
@@LifeisGood-ye8rl Usually, bowyers don't make higher draw weight versions than the max draw weight they offer on their website. I haven't asked nawalny, but I've asked various other bowyers in the past, and they always said the max possible draw weight is what they mention on their website. I think bowyers tend to be cautious with higher draw weights because if they don't have experience to make higher draw weights, they are not confident that a higher draw weight bow they make wouldn't potentially explode at some point. I can understand that of course, I also don't want to buy a bow where I'd have to fear that it explodes at some point because the bowyer has never made such a high draw weight before. The only bowyer I know of who is willing to make very high draw weight bows is Misko Rowcanin, I think I heard he makes the MR Tiron in any draw weight anyone might potentially want. But that's a Serbian bow, not a Korean one.
@LifeisGood-ye8rl
@LifeisGood-ye8rl 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tystros I did some research on the MR bows too seems like they’re built like tanks but my take is they have a stiff draw even for conventional weight range 60-80# and they are in my opinion not efficient even at higher draw. Justin ma did the speed test on his 120# and the speeds seems to average about 170-174 on 9.5gpp arrow. Respectable for horse bow design. The Korean bow Nawalny makes at 80# are pretty good draw weight. I think it would do just fine against lightly armor combatants during that period. And the speed is no slouch.
@Tystros
@Tystros 3 жыл бұрын
@@LifeisGood-ye8rl yeah I am sure that a 80# Korean bow is enough against most lightly armored combatants. But I personally don't really plan to go to war with my bows anyways lol. I just like the feeling and challenge of heavy draw weights. I have a cheap 140#@32" fiberglass horsebow from "longbowmaker", some Chinese company. That one is really built like a tank, and not efficient at all. But its great for training high draw weights. I always want to go up further in draw weight, so I've been wondering for quite a while which bow I should buy next that has a higher draw weight than 140#. There's not many options. I'd love to have some Korean bow with 150#, but no one seems to make any. I really like how efficient and fast all the Korean bows seems to be, no matter if it's the ones from Daylite, Kaya or this one from Nawalny. But since none of them make really heavy bows, I think I'll have to buy a MR Tiron at some point, since there's just no real alternatives.

@@Tystros max draw weight calculation is based on designs of bows. Most of my bows is very high performance bows. Designs are push almost to extreme, high unstrung reflex, agressive angles etc. I suppose my tatar can be made in around 140-150 lb , strongest for this time had around 130 on 32" . Monolith technology is much more durable and efficient with softer draw and better FD curve than standard glass/wood laminate. It is not problem make even 200 lb but moderate shape is neccesery for users safety. Maybe I will think about spcecial" warbow" design in future

Thank you so much~

in the Mongolian Draw, it is recommended that you use a scapula, spreading the bow and string from the top of your head, rather than pulling the strings using one arm. Also, it is recommended to aim at forward or 45 degrees.

sure, still sky draw is not very well seen here in Europe and banned in most clubs, so one has to adapt (and yet there are still more ways to do the same). thanks for watching

Ahhh...nother wonderful bow from Lukasz! I want to have one next year, something to look for in 2022! 😁 Am I mistaken, or is this the first bow reaching 60/60 points? The thumbring looks beautiful as well! The box for the ring is showing how much passion Lukasz brings into his masterpieces! Thank you so much for the review, Armin! Enjoy! 🏹🔆

The real traditional korean war bow is much more powerful(even modern archery players cannot pull the bowstring) and well-made by a water buffalo horn and other nature materials. We can call that just a korean bow for a commercial purpose, but not 'a war bow'. My ancestors had used their bows like muskets.
