I have my bachelor's in psychology and I'm also an agnostic atheist. I don't like Joel but I must defend that smiling. In layman's terms, his smiling here is a form of nervousness being displayed. Partly a smile of relief due to the shooting not being much worse. It really could have been a case of dozens of people dead. The subject appears to be very anxious as well. Lastly, smiling sends uplifting messages to the brain, we sometimes subconsciously do this during difficult situations in order to cope with a certain dilemma. These are all basics. I can delve deeper but I assure you, that is an uneasy smile. PS: I am highly of the belief that the only way you will be able to stop a bad guy with a gun is if you have good guys with guns nearby. Bad guys purposely target places like churches and schools because they know it will be like shooting fish in a barrel. Except they messed with Texas. Something like this could have been very tragic in states with strict gun laws.
