You don't have to press the button to load the feed ramp when you have one in the chamber. The trigger activates that button so after taking your first shot, the feed ramp will load in time to chamber the next shell.

You may be able to increase your capacity by 1 shell if you "ghost load" - first fill the mag tube, then put a shell under the bolt on the lifter, then put a shell in the chamber. My M1 Super 90 was a later model that required a small amount of material to be removed from the bolt carrier to allow the lifter to be lowered with the bolt to the rear.

After firing the M4 it will be the last shotgun I will ever buy for bear protection here in Alaska. I did add a aluminum follower in the magazine tube and a cylinder choke. I use Brennke Original Slugs and Leupold Delta Pro on American Defense Detachable mount. It’s with me in camp and while dressing moose.

6 in tube plus 1 in chamber and 1 on the carrier totals 8 2-3/4 shells and that's all it will hold. Never seen one hold more, I have the restricted Mil / Leo version and 8 is the max. Even installed a special follower that was designed to give a little more room in the tube but it still won't hold more than 6 in the magazine. There may be some shells that are shorter than others but not anything I'd actually use. Benelli is a little optimistic with their specs, claiming 7 in the mag. Like to know what shells they are referring to.

Once you have a round in the chamber theres no need to load one to the carrier by hitting the bolt catch before shooting. Just shoot and the shotgun will do the rest.

I'd recommend checking out the Stoeger M3000 freedom series. Sister branch of Benelli, it's semi auto inertia driven with 7+1(+1 ghost load). Similar look and controls, comes with a nice paddle release and rounded charging handle along with rail for sights. Very smooth action and shoots real well, costs around 500-600.

If available in Canada get some Federal FlightControl buckshot. Available in 00-buck and O-buck. It's in Federal's Vital-Shok category. There is a special wadding that keeps the shot together longer. So it acts more like a bullet. Amazing distances even though you have a cylinder choke. Found it it best to aim low if using FlightControl buckshot. More sho gets on target at longer distances. Like all buckshot it is packaged in five shell boxes. Can get it in brick packages of 250 shells per brick. 1000 rounds make a case of ammo. 500 rounds is a ½ case. 250 rounds is a brick of ammo. Anything smaller is for those that just want piddle around.

Thunder Ranch: Urban Shotgun course - there u learn some stuff! Bring your Beretta 1301 or Beretta A300 Patrol, the Mossberg JM940 isn't bad, too, though I'm not that big innto Mossbergs - however, the JM940 rocks. It's possible to train around the M4, but IMO it's just not cutting the cake compared with more modern stuff. It's a tactical icon from the past, famous from games & movies, but as they say: Don't meet your heroes. I for one wasn't that convinced, but that's just me.

I was going to get a 7 rd mag only to find out i would have to change out 3 parts so I’ll be upgrading my stock to an adjustable, adding a 7 mag tube, adding a follower and fore grip for the 4 parts required by the BS 922r rule.
