Shooting the Canon Eos R5 & 1Dx mkiii

I spent the last week shooting in Nambiti Game Reserve with Nambiti Plains Private Game Lodge. I had with me the New Canon R5 as well as 1Dx mkIII.
I can definitely say this is my absolute favorite setup, super diverse and more than capable of shooting anything you are faced with!

The r5 ONLY tracks animals BIHIND bushes or branches IF have had it solid locked onto its eyes. When you pull the camera up real quick to catch a bird or other animal as it moves behind shrub, you will experience that the r5 will ALWAYS prioritize the branches and will be out of focus for the animal. I have owned and used it now several months and shot every single day and regardless of the settings I program it is always the same. I never had problems like that with my 7D II and my 1 DX II. I am at a loss why the engineers at canon fiddled with a superb autofocus system and screwed its up so badly that it makes me not wanting to take the r5 with me for NOT STAGED shots or shots that require me to try and point and shoot quickly at animals and/or people. If you have time, have a solid view of your subject and no obstacles in the way, the r5 is unbeatable. Just keep the iso ABOVE 500 for the full dynamic range. Below 500 you can experience a loss of richness in colors, especially the yellows and greens.a

I enjoyed your video. I cover News, Corporate PR. I have just sold one of my 1DX MKIIIs and bought an R5. I was also thinking of selling the other 1DX for another R5 what are your thoughts? Good or bad move?

Kierran, in your opinion, specifically regarding eye and face detection in live view mode, which is better for R6 or 1DX MKIII? I have the R5 and it's perfect. I ask because the 1DXMKIII is a little older (7 months) and I would like to know if canon used the same technology on both or if the 1DXMKIII was still a less improved first version? I was unable to verify this test anywhere on the Internet. Love your videos!

Do you see yourself going completely mirrorless ? I have the 1dx2 and the R and I’m having a tough time deciding which way to go etc also when you pan with the R5 how is the blackout cheers!

Mirrorless is the way forward so eventually yes, there are so many pros about the system speed, resolution, ISO handling and price. You are getting epic video capability as well so I would say a big yes. Black out screen, look the evf takes some getting used to but it's really not that bad at all.

I have a 600mm version 2. I’m in the market for a new camera. If you had one choice between the two cameras you own for birds and birds in flight, which would be your camera? Thanks!!

I would honestly say the Eos R5 with that electronic shutter you have 20 frames per second plus the 45mp resolution!!

@@KierranAllen thank you. Do you find the buffer is bad compared to the 1Dx? I have the first 1DX and I like the buffer on that more than the other smaller cameras. Is the animal AF that good too for birds? Thankd

@@MrGflan i have never had an issue with the buffer on the R5 at all. and the animal af on birds is mind blowing. was photographing a fork tailed drongo, black on black and it still picked up its eye straight away!

@@KierranAllen ok sounds great!! I guess it’s a no brainer. I was going to get the 1Dx Mark 3 because i am still using the EF system, but if the adapter doesn’t mess things up, I’ll convert over. Does photoshop read the files yet? And Lightroom?

Yeah I have shot loads of still, the 45 mp full frame sensor. Gives you something out of this world!

@@KierranAllen be nice to see a video about the R5 for stills especially wildlife as many wildlife photographers (I love shooting birds in flight and am thinking of upgrading from my 7D ii) are interested in buying them and there’s too many videos about it’s video capabilities
