@@professionalpotato4764 you're reading influenced information, my friend. The actual facts can be found when you read more information that is available. The camera is artificially or prematurely overheating. It is also cooling down significantly quicker than the camera says it is. The temperature of the camera is recorded in RAW files and now that we know this, everyone is doing work to find out how it actually heats up and cools down. The conclusion is that it's a firmware update away from vastly improved video use. At least as it relates to cool down times and thermal management as you shoot photos and switch the video. The camera is on a strange timer that doesn't appear to depend on the actual camera temperature being read directly off the main board.

R5 is a photo beast, might as well be comparing a hassleblad to the A7SIII. That camera is so crippled at 12 MP, no pro would be caught dead with it. I've been shooting as a pro photographer for 15 years, mostly with 1 Series cams.... sold my R the other week to see what i would get next, and heard 12 MP on the Sony and laughed pretty hard. The A7RIV is a better camera than the A7SIII and yet, the A7RIV is still a generation behind the R5 when it comes to sensor tech (R5 has more dynamic range than any full frame camera to date in Photons to Photos tests) , and the R5 is slightly better at eye AF now, and has better video options as the A7RIV can only do 4K 30. It's sad that in order to make a camera good at video, Sony severely crippled the A7SIII. And the whole "12 MP is good enough for online use" is the biggest pile of horse#$@ I've ever heard. Guess what? 99% of video is viewed on KZbin - which is 8 bit iPB - in 1080 or less on tiny cellphone screens. Resolution is more important to photography than it is to video. Colours are more important than resolution, and Sony colours have been crippled for years. Canon has put cinema grade colours in all their cameras, all the way down to the $500 rebel cameras.
@77dris4 жыл бұрын
@@professionalpotato4764 🤣 If that makes you feel better about spending $4800 on a one trick pony then great! As a pro photographer (which makes up a far greater share of consumers than videographers), I gave up 12 MP back in about 2009. Good luck with all that.
@daltonrandall43484 жыл бұрын
@@77dris "That camera is so crippled at 12 MP, no pro would be caught dead with it." Uh, no *photography* pro. Which is fine, since it's not a camera aimed at photographers. They have their a7RIV for that. Hybrid cameras are always a compromise in one place or another, I wish they would just stop making them. But the masses keep falling for it. The people in this video are right... Canon did a piss poor job marketing the R5. It's a photography camera with a video mode tacked on. The a7SIII is the opposite. Naturally photographers are going to be drawn to the Canon, while videographers are going to be drawn to the Sony. But whereas Sony has an answer for the photographers, Canon leaves people shooting video out in the cold...

Well done Parker and Landon! Am always amazed at the negative comments but I guess it’s because the US English vocabulary has double the negative words to positive. There was a lot of work put into this video and since I shoot both Sony and Canon and use them as tools that works for my needs, I appreciate these videos and effort put into it. Although the R5 and A7S3 tied based on your scoring system, you highlighted what’s most important for your use case(s) and chose the 1DXM3. If I had to suggest the 3 camera bodies, I would say: - A7S3: for prosumers (with disposable money) to pros (indie filmmakers with limited budget) shooting mostly if not all video projects; - R5: prosumers and pros who shoots mostly stills and some video (split 60-70+/30-40+) projects; - 1DXM3: pros with legacy invested EF lenses and have a crew and just need reliability and durability and shoot all video projects (with some stills here and there) Then there are large production projects with larger budgets to afford a crew, then clearly the cinema video cameras are the way to go and even then, you can rent them as it doesn’t make sense to shoot with these cams everyday, as to rig up it’s big and heavy and lots of equipment are required. And this way, you don’t have to chase which brand and/or latest tech.

Agreed, was going to say the same thing. The category was literally called Lens Options. Also, from what Potato Jet said about the Sigma adapter (the one Sony recommended), you get fast AF from your Canon EF glass. But, they did a pretty good job with their categories and the likert scale for each category was simple removing complexity from judging the value, yet still allowing you to come to a fairly nominal value that you could draw conclusions from. What I would recommend is to also add a "Weight" to each category. 0 means it isn't important, 1 means it matters, 2 means it is important, and 3 means it is a show stopper. You then multiply the 0,1, 2 likert scale result times the weight. So if lowlight is a show stopper (aka a weight of 3) and the A7SIII gets your #1 spot or 2 points on the likert scale, you would give the A7SIII 6 points for lowlight (3 weight times 2 score on likert scale). Now you could take their scores for each category and adjust the final results based on weighting each category. Their current method gives the same exact value for each category, as way of making it even for everyone, but by applying this weighting technique to their scores, you could arrive at a conclusion that is more focused on what your find important. Which is kind of what each of them did separately at the end.

So I wouldn't say one is better than the other, they are both striving to achieve different outcomes!

Nice review and comparison guys. I mainly use Canon cameras but the Sony A7s III is looking like the one I'd go for here.The Sony auto focus has really caught up to Canon's awesome dual pixel auto focus.But still love those Canon colours straight out of the camera. Sony's 15 stops of dynamic range wins it for me as this is one of the most important features I look for in a camera.

Canon vs Sony is like relationships. If you are married, even know your wife might have many flaws and gained a bit of weight after giving birth, she will always be your #1 and even know this new co-worker is the freaking bomb, you have already invested too much to make the switch. The real winners are the ones that play the game with their head, no strings attached.

@@daltonrandall4348 I don't get your point or what you mean by "uninformed". The video is filled with information, the same information you can find in many other reviews. But yeah, in the end, the camera is just a tool (also proven many times in other videos in the same channel). Whoever thinks the camera matters more than the human behind it is the real "sheep" in my opinion.

@@RafaelGringo They're both important. You said, quote, *it doesn't matter what you shoot with.* You can believe that all you want, but there's a reason Steven Spielberg doesn't shoot his movies on an iPhone. Yes, you need to learn your craft. But dismissing the tool as unimportant because "it's all about skill" is equally ignorant. These videos sell you on the dream that you too can be as great as the best professionals, and "you don't need the high end gear because the secrets lie within you!" It's a con to get you to buy into what THEY are selling, and if you believe it, yes, you are a sheep.

@@daltonrandall4348 Anyone who has ever shoot with a cheap entry level camera and a high end one knows there's a huge difference, not only in quality but also in ease of life. Also, everyone reaches a point where their gear simply can't do what they need. The fact is in the CONTEXT of the video, do it really matter if you shoot with a A7S, 1DX or R5? They're all beasts. That's my take on the quote I did.
@daltonrandall43484 жыл бұрын
@@RafaelGringo Yes, it absolutely matters. If you're on a production and your camera says it won't shoot unless you turn it off for 2 hours, you're screwed. They are not all beasts. Sony is not a "beast" when it comes to still photography. Canon is not a "beast" when it comes to video. Pick the correct tool for the job, and certainly don't pretend they don't matter.

@77dris4 жыл бұрын
The thing about reliability is that for people who would be using these cameras on sets for video, they would most likely be using an external recorder... where there is no heat limitation on the R5, even in 4K HQ mode or 4K 60. Additionally, you can shoot 4K HQ mode using Super 35 on the R5 with no heat limitations either. This Super 35 mode is what 90% of hollywood movies are filmed on and what most of the cinema cameras use.

It's amazing to see a 45 MP photo beast of a camera go toe to toe with a one trick pony video camera, and still beat it in most IQ categories for video! And the R5 has the best dynamic range for photos of any current full frame camera, better than the D850, Z7 and A7RIV, and on par with the medium format GFX50. Canon's new sensor is really magic!

Yet there are YT channels (not Parker's) and countless viewer comments of "Time to switch!!" like every 6-8 months. In this hypermarket we're in with The Next Big Thing always right around the corner, so many photographers are switching systems (or at least claiming to) like some people change their socks. It's crazy.
@professionalpotato47644 жыл бұрын
Yeah... All the more so for people like me who're starting out. I'm still on the SL2/200D, with the Sigma 18-35 most of the time. I want to upgrade but a full frame kit esp Sony is just too expensive. 2 bodies + 1 trinity sets me back at least $10k-12k. Or I could just buy 2 M6 Mk2 and another lens for like 3-4k. Until I'm getting paid 4-5 figure freelance jobs, I doubt I'll ever be able to touch full frame D: Wish I had stuck with Sony. I sold the a5100 after it overheated like every 10 minutes of 1080p.
@WillStinton4 жыл бұрын
Professional Potato I was where you are with 80D, Tokina 11-16mm, and 50mm 1.8. I did real estate for 2 years with that setup before going full frame with Sony. I bought the A7iii when it first came out and the 16-35mm GM. You can do a lot of jobs with just one camera and one lens and just build from there.
@daltonrandall43484 жыл бұрын
Nope. For photography, I shot Canon for over a decade and had a fair amount of "L" glass. They dragged their heels on mirrorless for so long that I switched to Sony around 2015 and sold all of my lenses. Go with the tools that work for you. It's nice to see the R5 finally starting to catch up, but I'm really tired of these cameras that think they can do it all. There is always a compromise. Sony has the right approach with a model dedicated strictly to video, and another line dedicated primarily to stills. I wish they'd just ditch the video function from the a7RIV completely, to be honest... you don't buy it for that (just like you don't buy the a7SIII for stills). But people are either okay with "hyrbid" cameras being "good enough" or they just aren't educated about their tools (probably a bit of both). If the R5 had just straight out been developed as an alternative to the a7RIV, they'd have a clear solid option. Instead, they marketed it as a video camera first and nobody is going to deal with it that way. I admit that I'm less hesitant to switch again due to having glass, but the cameras from both brands mostly do what I need now. 5 years ago, however, Canon was lagging wayyy behind. Even their glass couldn't save them.

Very thorough except--what about in body audio? I haven't yet seen anyone demonstrate how to get 4 channels of audio into the Sony A7S III. The Sony XLR K3M only outputs 2 channels.
@gimiked86854 жыл бұрын
If you are doing 4 channels of audio then you should be using something external as far as I am aware. Zoom or Tascam have external devices that enable 4 channels or more of xlr imputs or 1/4 inch jacks usually. And they let you record backups as well as give you a line out for imput into the camera's mic jack. Im not an audio engineer so I might not have understood the question, I am just a guitar player with 25 years of playing around with sound and 6 years of camera work that audio is not my strong suit in. But as far as I am aware the K3M, just as Panasonics version, only gives you a couple channels of audio. That works for a couple boom mic's that can record a broad area. Or a couple lav mic's for example. But if you need more than that I use a Zoom H6 with 6 channel recording. Or record each source individually and mix them in post with the Zoom h1n with a backup on the camera in case I have a problem with one of the audio sources. Just my personal way of doing things as a bootleg sound guy/one man band. But if I have a lot to record in audio I use the on camera xlr's as my backup auido in case I have a problem with a bad cable, jack, battery, or sd card on the Zoom's.
@Atamaii4 жыл бұрын
@@gimiked8685 Sony had a webinar and i asked them about this. They had a complicated slide which I did not screen shot. They claimed that the K3M will send 2 lines of stereo to the A7SIII. If you look, some of the product video from Sony shows 4 audio channels active on the touch screen. I vlog and if I had to record external I would buy a new camcorder instead.

@@jalexanderevans I have mine now. The XLR-K3M has 2 x XLR mono inputs, with Attenuation and a Low Cut filter, gain, and (line power?). Plus 1 x 3.5mm stereo input with Input gain only. So getting the 4 channel is doable, a little awkward. 4 x XLR would be better, but that would be a cinema camera. I will use it mostly "in studio" on a tripod.
