Coming from both a military background and a competitive background I both see his point and think it's not very good at the same time. What be called the safety turtle (great name btw) is not very effective. Not because it impedes vision but because it doesn't do anything for you. But "just walking" isn't a very stable platform either. You'll notice your sights jumping everywhere. Now I'm pretty skilled at walking fast and shooting accurately and what I do is controversial and most likely won't fit you. So this is how I teach people how to walk and shoot. Grab a cup and fill it to the brim with water. Now walk in whatever manner that doesn't make you spill any water. Now that you've found a style that fits you, try adding speed. Now just keep practicing adding speed without having water spill. From now on that is how you walk and shoot. You can't say one way is better than the other because it comes down to your own individual biometrics. Stiff hips, a hurting knee, big feet, small feet, long legs, short legs, type of shoes etc etc. Give it a try.

This is a good spread out explanation. It also depends on your body. Crouching may be good for controlling recoil with rifles, and sometimes or some type of pistols, but the movement style will be based on your comfortability and weapon and skill.
@longgone98692 жыл бұрын
I’m also not a fan of walking backwards sure it’s easy to do on a square range but try that under stress when you’re being put into a life-threatening situation and the ground is uneven. You’re more likely to fall onto your back. Imagine a short round coming into your body through your rectum and traveling its length. Is a gunshot wound like that even survivable? If I’m close, I’m doing my best to burn the guy down and then whatever my direction of travel is, I’m going toes first. Not only will it allow me to stay on my feet but I’m gonna get out of the area much faster.

When Shooting while moving laterally angles or straight on, it helps to lower yourself because it's easier to shoot at wide angles along with with better recoil management and keeping sights on target for faster follow on shots. Also the turtle is with your shoulders and neck, which is wrong when you lower your forward leaning center of gravity. Simply lift your chin up and only bend at the waist. Don't round your back and shoulders. That is slow for multiple target engagement standing or any other position. Try a straight back and lift your chin when you lower your legs slightly bend forward at the waist, versus walking normal at 25 -10 yards. Big difference in getting sights back on target for follow on shots. Try it with an extended mag and shoot from 25 yards on in. Both styles. Reload as needed. Don't stop until you hit the 3. There will be a big difference in shooting cadence between the two. Especially at distance. Does it matter at 3 yards and in? Nah. Everyone's a Hero at the 3. Use a shot timer and you can truly see the split times. 25 yards to the 3 you should eat two 15 round mags easy! On your way for another reload at the 7-5 yard line. All a zone/bulls/kill zone hits only. Then try just on target for speed, then back to a zone. Proper technique, then speed, and bring 'em together. Now the angle piece. Walk across the range at 10 yards to start. 3-4 Sets of targets spaced out. Draw and Shoot on the move. Have someone call out threat engagements like pair on two/box drill whatever. Engage a couple before you get to them like 5 yards before your lined up with the targets. Engage 1 yard away, then engage one set right as you get on line with them. Your body standing up does not lend well to shooting at targets slightly past you as you're moving away. This is more for CQB, but the lesson still stands. Then practice with a rifle and pistol. Transition as necessary. So yes with the Proper technique lowering yourself does help with faster accurate rounds on target. Not the turtle technique. Only move as fast as you can accurately engage. Then build speed in moving and shot cadence. Lowering yourself does not mean full squat. Shoot at distance 25 - 10 yard line and see what works for you. I usually drop less than a foot lower than my normal height, but that's because I'm tall. That's not everyone. Find what works for you.

I was going to post the same information but you stated it all clearly. There are reasons we trained lowering your center of gravity, of course it was developed back when we shot pistols with a lot more recoil than a 58oz+ 9mm but the technique is the same. I'd add a couple of things, one is by bending your knees, not turtling your shoulders and arms, you won't get into the "Frankenstein Walk" where you tend to swing the gun around as you put your feet down, also once you learn how to correctly use a red dot shooting on the move becomes much easier than with iron sights.
@sanctifiedsurvival2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for posting all of this, it certainly helps to keep your knees slightly bent for rapid, quick movement as well. Situations like these can change in an instant resulting in death, so it's best to be on your guard at all times and be ready to adjust to new threats and risks as fast as possible. Lowering our center of gravity even if by a fraction helps with faster response times and fluid movement. Tactical movement is not easy, especially if you're doing so with 50lbs of gear on your back. Train, train, train!

Forward: a rolling stable heel-toe…Backwards: a shorter slower rolling toe- heel with the heel higher (to detect and not trip over objects). Practice periodically (I practice dry-fire almost daily).
@Edge_Of_Paradise2 жыл бұрын
Negative my friend. The heel-toe roll looks great on Hollywood movies and got trained in the 90's and 00's a bunch, but it causes your muzzle to bounce, stringing shots vertically and worsening recoil. It is also an unnatural movement that often induces "safety turtle" as you bend your knees to drop your heel sooner. It also forces you to narrow your stance and reduces stability for managing recoil, and makes it slightly harder to rotate and address threats at other angles. There's been a lot of research and training on this in the last 20 years, and every trainer I've worked/trained with (SEAL's, Pararescue, Secret Service, DEA, ATF, IDF, Mossad, LAPD SWAT, etc...) all kept breaking trainees of the same habit, "stop with the heel-toe stuff Hollywood, this isn't a movie. Just walk." I used to do it and train it myself. Like the cup and saucer Weaver grip, it's time for this one to be replaced with what works better. And I can tell you from a lot of experience that it does.

From a tactical perspective walking and shooting barely is a thing. You might see yourself walking backwards and shooting as a civilian, but then you'll be moving way more hastily than what you can whilst crouching. Moving and shooting tactically mostly look like this: *run to cover* *return fire* *move to new cover* *return fire* And if you need more than one step to move you better sprint because your life depends on it.

fwiw, I think most regular non leo or military should train mostly lateral and backward movements. Not many will need to walk forward towards the threat, unless a loved one is in that direction and you need to protect them. Most of the cases, you are using your gun to protect yourself, and most of the cases bad guys will run after the shots break out. Don´t kid yourself and think you will go john wick on the bad guys. Train for the most likely scenario.

I think this is supposed to be a starting point for shooting while moving. Basically trying to get people to focus on 2 things at once, your step and your sights, as most people have never shot while moving. That being said, I've always been told that your fight stance should be the same no matter the tool. Chest up, shoulders square, knees slightly bent with weight on the balls of your feet. Why? Because that's your most stable and maneuverable platform. If you look at any sport (basketball, baseball, hockey, wrestling, football, tennis, boxing, etc.), their ready stances are almost identical with slight variations depending on the objectives of the sport. I don't understand why fighting would be so different.

I agree with the desire to always be more natural in movement, but I don't think that means you use the same posture you use for just a regular walk. The human body does a few things when it goes into "athletic" mode -- whether thats hunting, fighting, all sports, etc. We lower our center of gravity, we put more weight on the balls of our feet, we widen our stance, we bring our hands up, we lower our chin, etc. This is true whether you're hitting a tennis ball, defending in basketball, stalking a deer in the woods, boxing in the ring, etc. I don't think you want to fight that natural athletic instinct. I think your shooting position should be based on your natural walk from an athletic position, not from a casual position.

I'd have to question why it would be necessary to keep putting that many rounds into a 'target' and get closer. Unless the 'target' is wearing body armor, in which case you may have to refocus on a non-armored part. In any case, personally, if I couldn't neutralize a threat from 15-20 feet in at most four rounds, either I need to spend more time at the range and get my aim better or get a larger caliber, or both. If you are in the military or police, they will give you training and backup - follow that. If you are a civilian, it is very unlikely that you'll be in a pitched gun battle where you need to move after someone. Most deadly encounters are home invasions and room sizes are about 15 to 20 feet wide (on average) at most. If you are yards and yards away, most likely you are not in your home. The police say that you should attempt to flee before using deadly force. The question is always 'could you have left and lived' since we as civilians are not the police and military and we have no business enforcing the law, just protecting ourselves, unless we are also trying to defend someone else who is at risk - whole other story there. Anyway, I'm sure this person means well, yes it good to be aware of your whole surroundings, but you also should question why you would want to make your self such a target, and why/how you would be in that situation in the first place. Just my 2 cents.

Because having been in less-than-lethal scenarios (normal fights, sporting events like football, and AirSoft/Paintball/Laser tag), I can tell you it is natural to squat/duck and get something up in front of your face as you are (a) shrinking your overall profile (making you harder to hit slightly), (b) gaining a lower center of balance so you are less easy to knock over (because if the worry is you lose peripheral, that insinuates you are worried about being attacked from the sides, and it is likely it won't be with a ranged weapon, but rather melee weapon or bare hands, like a tackle), and (c) you protect your face some from incoming objects. I don't see this as being sound nor, more importantly, realistic advice. But perhaps I'm just programmed odd.

Bruh sure it’s good info but if people are not doing it live it’s all for naught.

This is such excellent advice. Our entire knows how to safely and affectively utilize a firearm, and I will be practicing this next time we are at the range.👍❤️
