Also what is fly by wire for focus. New phrase for me, or maybe its a UK english vs US english thing.
@astarious6 жыл бұрын
haha. it just means that focus is all manual (alt. play it by ear). it's not like a 1ds or other cameras where u can tap a point and the focus will stay on auto. personally I love manual focus while shooting. there's a certain craft that's so satisfying about it when you nail it. but auto comes in real handy when u need to do walk and talk and vlogs etc. I have the first pocket and am in love with the focus peaking, so with practice it can add a personal touch for you as a craftsman. :)

Maybe it's not set up for a run -n- gun environment with advanced auto focus, ibis and all the other perks we have grown to appreciate..... but with a little directorial control the possibilities are limitless. I may just pick one up for producing online commercials and marketing videos. Kudos to Black Magic for the inspiration I have been looking for. This camera looks like a total game changer. 4k60p RAW INTERNALLY (more or less) is just HUUUGE! and is a selling point that just stand for itself. It feels like this will be my first camera since its looking so perfect for stock filming. It's just so mind-blowing for this poop of a price, just so underpriced AND you get resolve on top for free which is totally underpriced as well! BM is really rocking the stage, without mentioning fking BM RAW!! This company is just blowing my mind away. In relation to the price of course, it's not comparable to Arri or Red, but e.g. Sony's FS7 is a super nice camera as well and has its benefits itself and is overall seen probably the better camera but the BMPCC4k isn't that far behind and it's make a huuuge difference if a camera costs 10 bucks or less than just one and a half. But i'm concerned about lenses; coming from EF and E, MFT feels like a downstep. Do you guys have any recommandations for specific lenses or companys? How are the ones from for example Walimex performing? What about the lenses used in this video? What's about adapters, sticking to Canon EFs? Since it's a small sensor with 4k resolution my suggestion is that you need a really crisp and high quality lens to take care of the big resolution on that small sensor. And i'm also interested in all the rigging stuff; Cage, monitor, handle, power (v-mount would be a donger), ssd, matte boxes, filters...how's the performance with a one hand gimbal like zhiyun's crane or ronin s? In addition to the use of auto focus. It's mentioned that the camera supports AF, but with which lenses and how does it performes? I'm really excited (say what) about this camera and can't wait to see all the videos and pictures that are coming up in the next weeks! BM is really starting something big and in combination with BM RAW and Resolve it's (being in love with this cam) like a dream come true
@emptystring68336 жыл бұрын
Portzir When it comes to lenses on MFT: You can just use EF lenses with a speedbooster (Viltrox or Metabones) which reduce the cropfactor to 1.4, giving shallower DoF and wider perspectives. I personally don't like shooting with the Panasonic or Olympus MFT lenses, because they are all fly by wire. Many Walimex(also Samyang or Rokinon)/Zhongyi Mitakon/ Laowa/ Voigtländer and other 3rd Party lenses are amazing. They often are completely manual (which I prefer) and their image quality is very good from my experience. When it comes to lenses I don't think you are gonna give up on much. I'm shooting MFT with Panasonic Cameras along side Full Frame Canon gear and I rather stick to my Samyang, Zhongyi and Laowa lenses then to adapt EF glass, because the MFT lenses can do everything I need. My two favorite lenses: Samyang 12mm T2.2 NCS-CS: Fast, very sharp 24mmm equiv. wide angle with gear rings for Follow Focus Zhongyi Mitakon 25mm f/0.95 Speedmaster: very fast 50mm f1.8 equiv. Also very sharp when stopped down to f/2, f/2.8 Hope this helped with your decision making process
@CoolerQ6 жыл бұрын
@@emptystring6833 It's worth noting that some Olympus lenses actually have a real focus ring with repeatable focus. I think it is most of the lenses labeled "PRO". They default to focus by wire but you can pull back on the focus ring to lock it into manual focus with a fixed travel.

I'm in LOVE of the footage this camera provides! It's natural, organic, beautiful... As far as i'm concerned, nothing in this ~1000-2000€ range (proper 4K capable) reaches even near this smooth lovely output... WOW! A7III, XT-3, GH5 / GH5S... All wonderful in their own rights, but for me they simply can't touch this. ISO performance is stunning too. Price? More than right! I will get this one and love shooting it... I already have many great m4/3 lenses (12-35mm 2.8 to begin with) and adapters, so it's a no brainer. Thank you very much for this! Really exciting times!

This plus the upcoming 10-25mm f1.7 could be QUITE SOMETHING... It's probably going to be pricey, but if the features (and optics) are right, i'll get it. These kind of potential money issues are easily overcome by determination. Looks like it'll cater towards video shooters aswell, we'll see... As long as they improve the fly-by-wire mechanism to something more precise and better, that would be swell!

The camera is great -- no reason to quibble... I bought my first digital camera 19 years ago -- Casio 3 MP with 480p video and 300MB internal hard drive (still have it) -- it cost *$1,000 US* -- Lenses, on the other hand struggle to keep up without costing a fortune. The Lumix G Vario II series seems to be just fine. Lens-based IS plus post is good enough without a gimbal -- though keeping the camera *level* and moving smoothly is the main point of a gimbal -- not just jitter control.
@HeathcliffBlair6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Very interesting and informative review. I would have liked to have seen more normal speed motion material to judge the camera's cadence abilities. There's A LOT of slo-mo stuff out there in general, and while it's a pretty and beguiling effect, it doesn't help to determine some key aspects of a camera's actual performance. Indeed it can hide quite a few sins. No disrespect intended. Thanks again.
@chillseason6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this hands on review, I really love the “everyday shooting” feel! I believe this will be a huge game changer for entry level cinema cameras. I think that it’s amazing for what it was made for. I see a lot of people upset about the lack of IBIS, continuous autofocus, having to rig it up, etc. and I’m not understanding why. This is a cinema camera, much like REDs or the Alexa Mini. You don’t autofocus with a RED cameras, Alexa Minis don’t come with IBIS. You build cinema cameras up to fit your needs. Appreciate it for the purpose it was made for. Also...you pretty much have to rig any camera up in some way if you’re looking to produce professional content.

SMH at these people who are saying its to shakey, no shit, this isn't a stills camera being hybridized into a cine camera. I think it's fair to point out issues like that. Absolutely if you want a great-looking image you should set up a proper rig. However, the design is very low-profile, and adding rigging to this camera would remove that benefit. I feel this would be a greatly improved camera if it had some IBIS, though I'm still keen to see this with an IS lens. I agree with your point of view, but it doesn't totally discount the downside of this design choice. However, adding IBIS would have put up the camera cost significantly. It's fair enough that they've chosen to keep it cheap and leave it up to the consumer to rig it up as they see fit. In conclusion, I agree and yet I don't :P lol

DJI has its own system with a follow focus module that can be used wirelessly or connect to the ronin S. That might be the best way to go for a lightweight setup. I use my FS5mk ii on my Ronin S and I've had to add weights to the back when using bigger lenses. They screw right into the QR plate. I'm sure you could figure out how to make this work. 'Color' and 'looks like video' are subjective matters... What it looks like to you, and what it looks like to me are vastly different things. The issue is that people claim something 'looks more video' than others --- the reality is, all of these cameras produce cinematic looking images in the right hands; anyone who thinks differently is simply a fan-boy of a specific camera or brand, and will not indulge the fact that other cameras can produce good looking images too.

I agree with Aspire Films. I shoot on Panasonic (DVX200 and GH4) and from what I've seen, the color science on the Pocket 4K is much better, especially for skin tones. And I can change 16 points of color points on the DVX200, and have it dialed in about as best as I can and I suspect that the Pocket 4K will still be better. Should be interesting to do a color comparison between the DVX200 and the Pocket 4K (and the DVX200 is twice the price). But, remember, different cameras have different strengths because of their different purposes. My Ford D150 is a totally different beast than my Honda Fit. Some with video gear.

rudymcfarlane yeah as far as I'm aware there's no laws limiting filming and photography in public spaces, it'd get a bit boring if everyone shot trees lmao!

I thought the GH5 footage filming this piece seemed more cinematic. But I'm sure with better lenses and shooting RAW will be amazing. Can't wait for my order to arrive.

may i ask, how did you know the piece was filmed with the pana gh5? not attempting to challenge, truly just asking. thumbs up.

Excellent video as always. I would've like to see on screen text what lenses you used and the f-stops and focal length and such...

I thought about it, but It would have slowed me down so much to write down the fstop, ISO etc. for every shot I filmed in a fast paced situation like this. Carl

Great video, thank you! I'm wondering if there is a IQ difference between the Panasonic lens and the Olympus lens. For one, I'm only considering those with OIS built in since I have exactly same thought as you, I mostly want to shoot as light and portable as possible. The three versatile zooms with OIS are Panasonic 12-35 2.8 and 35-100 2.8, then the Olympus 12-100 4 PRO. I really love to see you test with these zooms on the IQ. Of course, if there is any other good lens with OIS to recommend, please do so. A fast question: do you think Olympus lens has better looking "3D-look" IQ than the Lumix? The color, contrast, basically the rendering. I sometimes find the Lumix lenses IQ a little "flat" and "dull". But I definitely love the size and weight of the 12-35 and 35-100 for sure, fantastic. Thank you!

If only the battery life were better, this camera would be a knockout! I love that it records in ProRes formats, comes with various gammas, and that great 5-inch screen. I guess that's what a good third-party battery solution would fix.
@ProAVTV6 жыл бұрын
I quite like powering it from an external monitor. Like the SWIT CW-55C or the SmallHD Focus. Then you can use larger sony NPF's and power the camera for hours, but dont need to rig it up like a larger camera Carl
@Playerdrew106 жыл бұрын
ProAV TV that’s a good point, but I’m thinking for gimbal and travel usage. I need it stripped down for weight and to last longer than 45 min on battery. I use the GH5 now and the battery life is amazing. It’s hard to go to something else.

Can you please test this "cinema" camera in a cinematic/cinematography way I.e. some proper controlled lighting setups just as black magic do for their promos also. Natural light market places reallt don't showcase the camera well enough.

Hi, I love what you've done here, I feel you've really demonstrated the beauty of this camera in the purest form. However, would you share with me which lens you did use in the subway (or the tube)? I'm guessing it's the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f/2.8-4 ASPH? Thanks!

I'm impressed with the footage quality. The auto-focus is what I am still on the fence about. I see you got good results manually focusing but I tend to move a lot with my camera on a gimbal so it remains to be seen if that is a deal-breaker or not yet. Thanks for the review....very helpful!
@ProAVTV6 жыл бұрын
There is no continuous AF, and the Push to AF is slow and a little unreliable. If AF is really important to you there are better cameras for you than this. Although, none with this high quality video, for this pricepoint... Carl
@MustWorkWeekends6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response Carl. Yeah, all the cameras out now have some compromise. I'm just trying to figure out which compromises are most important to me. I am looking forward to the rest of your tests. Again, thank you for your time and efforts.

Very interesting, thanks! One of the most remarkable comments is because of the large screen. I never thought about it, but you are probably right. "Mentaly" i compose a shot different when i look through an EVF! I am an advocate for using an EVF, because you see the world with the cameras eye and almost like the audience in a dark cinema. But i have to open my mind, looking at the shot like a director on his monitor can also be a good option.
@ProAVTV6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Its so important to look at your framing in all sorts of ways. I know lots of DP's that will look through the viewfinder, and then go check it on the directors monitor, constantly swapping between them. Carl
@truecuckoo6 жыл бұрын
It looks absolutely lovely. Did you put a lot of work into grading? Or was it just a mere lift, shadows, highlights and saturation? It looks like you’ve put a LOT of attention to balancing the colours to look juuust right. Just for a comparison of battery life. I’m getting around 3 hours of 4K on a GH5 per battery. It’s a pretty big difference.
@ProAVTV6 жыл бұрын
Not really, like you say just a contrast and saturation boost. In some shots we took out a tiny bit of green from some artificial lights, but that is about it. Carl
@truecuckoo6 жыл бұрын
ProAV TV wow that is impressive. I’m used to using the first Pocket Cinema Cam. I often miss it, but grading was actually somewhat time consuming since I often felt there was a lot to deal with. This new one sounds like a huge improvement, if that’s all you’ve done to the colours. Thanks for sharing.

Nice, calm review. But another review convincing me to stick with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K and invest in a Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera. Sadly. All about taste. But i love Blackmagic!

Beautiful, clear shots! How did you remove that faded look that I normally see in Blackmagic footage? The blacks are black and the colors look crisp and rich! Is that the ProRes??

Thanks! Glad you liked it. It uses the full sensor in 4K. So thats a MFT sensor, about the same size as the Gh5s which is a 1.84x crop when compared to full frame. Carl

This looks absolutely amazing. The colors of the stained glass lights are incredible! Please tell us about your post process. How did you grade this footage? I'm not at all bothered by the stabilization of your shots. Totally usable for this type of shooting. Just depends on what you are going for.
@ProAVTV6 жыл бұрын
We did a very simple grade in FCPX. Just raise whites, lower blacks and add saturation. A few shots needed a tiny bit of magenta added. Nothing that took more than a minute or two a shot. Carl
