I've owned the Hyundai Accent of this generation, which is practically identical to this mechanically. My favorite things were how reliable the Alpha II motor is, and how well it handles in snow. With snow tires it's a very capable and simple winter car.

I second that. I had 2005 Accent and rust was the only enemy of it. Good design.

I drove one new this generation. Couldn’t get over how detached it felt. The motor smelled funny. The plastics were super cheap. I was convinced it would turn to dust for someone. But I see many with a manual holding up un-expectably well!

When the Hyundai Accent version of this came out in Australia I had one as a hire car and moved house in it which was a 4 hour highway drive. They aren't rocket ships but they will get you from A to B. I shortly after bought my first car a 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.5. It was built better and handled a lot better. Again no rocket ship but a great car to start on as it was reliable and cheap on gas. Now I have a 2018 Santa Fe Sport as I live in Canada 🇨🇦 now and need AWD for winter. I'm happy with it and it's good in the snow. All cars are stepping stones and hey it doesn't matter if you drive an economy car. You're smart. They are cheap on gas and parts and you're probably not drowning in a huge car loan like a lot of people are.

My first car was a 2008 Hyundai Accent GS 3-door hatch in Tango Red. Basically identical to this gen of Rio. Only options equipped were the SiriusXM radio and the 4-speed A/T (wish it had been a manual...). Otherwise, manual locks, windy windows, honestly surprised it had A/C and power steering (it wouldn't have needed the latter, that car was so light). And every time I think back on that little car... I miss it. Badly. Reliable engine, easy to work on, great gas mileage. I loved everything about that little hatchback, and if I could have another one, I would, and this time with the manual!

The optima was actually the 1st car done under the hyundai umbrella after they were purchased. The sorento also sedona 2nd gen sportage all came before the 2nd gen rio. Also. 1st gen rio didn't use escort parts. That was the sephia. Oh right also the spectra came before also.

Own one of these but it's not stock in any sense and its the only vehicle I've owned for longer than 5 years. I like the offshoot design of the body and yes I certainly agree about the plastic trim. It's a bit of an eyesore, but at least in the refresh of the body they did away with it for color matched side trim and full color bumpers. Good review of a misunderstood little eco-box. Also, it currently has 132,455 miles on it. Base of base models so it's options are: No power anything. Steering? No. Windows? Nope. Mirrors? Ha, no. How about A/C? 4 window units. Fog lights? Yeah, no. But you do get 3 pedals, a stereo, some okay seats, Disc front/Drum rear brakes, and a heater that will roast you out of the car. Hilarious enough, it's more fun to drive than my '18 JLU Wrangler.

Ive recently just bought a 2011 Kia rio (base model, same as video) with 205,000 miles on it for a steal, ive put nearly 3,000 miles on it. Highly recommended if you find one for a good price, i get nearly 38mpg and pay nothing for gas; however, laking in air-conditioning and powered steering it does give a little to wish for, but how cares for the price! Not a bad car.

I had a 2006 Kia Rio LX as my first car, and it was one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. As a drummer, the biggest test of making it was getting to fit a full set of drums into the Rio, and surprisingly enough, it had better space than one of my bandmate’s 3 Series. It also survived two serious wrecks. It was also reliable, easy to drive, and quieter than my Scion xA of the same year. It was basic but it was one of Hyundai/Kias better vehicles, which is saying a lot saying how awful some of its competition was from the time.

I owned a Hyundai accent when I was younger and drove it 150k miles with the 6mt. I also drove it like a race car 😆. I happen to own this car in the auto version and find myself driving it around corners just as fast as my Hyundai. My previous cars were a modded wrx and a modded GTP before this one. The Kia is slow but it can handle corners with some balls of steel. Nostalgia is a great drug 😂

This generation was better than the generation before. Mom had a '03 Accent, and we had a '10 or '11 Accent, this generation Rio as a rental. This generation was a step up from the previous generation, but the 3rd gen was even better. I'd drive one of these as my first car. Odd to see an SX trim without power anything, thought that trim level had such.

I still see these shitboxes everywhere. They'll run poorly forever with faded paint and trim missing but never actually die. It's good that there's still cheap beaters for basic transportation available. Kiyundai has really come a long way. They realized they could make more money by making nice cars that people actually want to buy. They're still not Honda or Toyota but they're getting there.
